Why, Eagles?

Can you picture this? Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, sitting on the sidelines watching his team close out a meaningless preseason game while being told the NFL's big news of the day?

"Donovan, we've signed Mike Vick," Andy Reid might have said.

"You did what?" McNabb had to say.

He has to be shocked like the rest of us. Why would the Eagles, a team that builds so well through the draft and makes good football decisions, bring in Vick? The Eagles agreed to a two-year deal with Vick Thursday night, ending the where-will-he-play talk for now.

My question is this: What's the point?

Is Vick being brought in as a backup? If that's why, it's fine. If it's to take snaps from McNabb, it's just dumb.

McNabb is a top-10 quarterback who led his team to the NFC Championship Game. He needs to be on the field all the time.

As for Vick, watching McNabb might be good for him.

Early in his career, McNabb was a run-around quarterback who wasn't a good passer. But as he's stopped running and started scrambling to throw instead of to run he's made huge strides as a passer.

Vick has to do the same, so watching and learning from McNabb might be a good thing for him. And the Eagles are a good organization for a troubled player from a stability standpoint. Of course, the Eagles fans are another story.

What I can't figure out is what Vick will do for the Eagles, unless holding a clipboard is a good exchange for dealing with the circus that will follow him.

No, Tomlin wouldn't have been the one making the final decision but if you think he wouldn't have had any input on the matter then you must be living in some parallel universe.   I didn't really think I needed to state the obvious as to ownership being the ones making the decision ... I was merely pointing out that Tomlin goes right along with the corporate mindset in Pittsburgh and pointing out the fact that he would agree with the Rooney's as to the risk they would be taking by bringing that baggage and media nightmare into their clubhouse.

But thank you so much for pointing out the obvious to me ... as a 30 year fan of the NFL I didn't know that ownership and GM's make personnel decisions ... glad you schooled me on that!

Ronwhite01,
You need to get a clue before you post something, you could not coach or lead a team out of a wet paper bag. Get a clue and do the rest of us knowledgable football fans, do not post nothing else. It show shows your football stupidity.

Why, Eagles?

Are you kidding---a second chance? He flipped off the fans in Atlanta, he smoked weed and got caught after he was sentenced to prison, he got busted with a mysterious water bottle with a hidden compartment for drugs, and of course he hung, electrocuted and drowned MULTIPLE dogs with little remorse. Sorry he has had numerous second chances. Also, let's not forget the lies to the fans of the Falcons and to the owner of the Falcons. Here's to a quick career ending injury to a waste of space thug!!!

Why, Eagles?

Go to the Eagles website and listen to MCnabb's press conference and instead of ALL this speculation learn the TRUTH! Yes, I thought from a purey football perspective this wasn't his BEST move but it's a 2 year deal with an option in the 2nd Year so in reality it's likely a 1 year contract. Also even if he gets a small package to be utilized in the Eagles' offense be it wildcat or not he is taking up for a valuable roster spot and with the injuries that have already incurred on this team I find it hard to believe than can add another QB. Since Vick is nearing 30 years old if he can look good in a limited capacity and somehow bring a Vince Lomardi trophy to the good people of Philadelphia than he may find a team with a viable chance to become a starter. For now he can roost safely in the Eagle's nest with the support of McNabb who was the one recruiting him in the 1st place!

Why, Eagles?

Michael Vick gets his second chance, from Coach Andy Reid and the Eagles. Doesn't seem like a good fit given the offense they run and knowing how Vick's skills and tendencies are. Which..is primarily to run, then pass. He definitely adds a new weapon to the offense and special teams. Plus, they're probably not going to pay him much and use him for situational plays when they really need a first down or a touch down. He can be a decoy, run the Wildcat, or execute a very effective trick-play. Let's not forget how great a runner he is in space and making people miss. Personally, I think he would've been better at the St. Louis Rams or the Chicago Bears, but it is what it is. If i were a Philly fan...I would be very upset. You let T.O. go, and bring in a dog killer and torturer? Why not call up PacMan Jones while you're at it, or let Donte Stallworth know he has a home waiting for him when he's off of suspension. Stay classy Philly.

Why, Eagles?

mrj725,

Why are you so hypocritical?!?  People hunt deer for SPORT...not so they can eat what they kill but so they can mount it on their walls.  How is doing that any different than fighting dogs for SPORT???  Aren't the animals dying unnecessarily in both situations???  I guess you feel that the only difference is that black people fight dogs so it's wrong but white people hunt deer so it's okay.  Check yourself...

The two faces of the Eagles.

8 or 9 years ago, the Eagles cut RB Thomas Hamner and DB Damon Moore for getting caught by the police for dog abuse.  Now in 2009, they hire the guy that masterminds the destruction of these beautiful creatures for amusement.  What has changed?  Are the Eagles becoming soft, or has the trangressions of Andy Reid's two oldest sons caused him to become more lenient when someone that is important to him either personally or professionally gets caught in a criminal activity?  I'm not buying this sudden change in attitude by Andy Reid or the Eagles.   I trace this signing to one team that the Eagles are losing to in media attention and importance, the Philadelphia Phillies.

The defending 2008 MLB champs have been dominating the Philly airwaves and the national media for the past several months, and the Eagles don't enjoy becoming second fiddle in town.  Joe Banner was tired of hearing about Phillies trades and player acquisitions for the past couple of months, and with Pedro Martinez grabbing national media attention on Wednesday and Thursday, Banner had had enough.  So he decided to put the Eagles back on the front burner by signing Mr. Vick.

Now, at the end of 2009, Kevin Kolb will be a free agent, and who knows if Kolb can play yet (although I think he can), and thus the Eagles may need a back up for 2010.  But Michael Vick, c'mon.  The Eagles already have one QB that can't hit a receiver in stride and now they bring in skinny, albeit more athletic clone to McNabb in Vick.  But Vick may not help them win any more games this year, and his addition to the roster will bring much more unwanted distractions than Terrell Owens ever did.  Just watch.

Let me see if I get this straight, we get rid of Brian Dawkins, one of the greatest football players, personally and professionally, to wear the Eagles green, and we upgrade our talent with Michael Vick.  I'm not buying it.  And I don't want to hear about second chances.  If that were the case, the Eagles would give the employee they fired for posting something negative about losing Dawkins on a web site a second chance.  But the Eagles have two faces, and if you're on their wrong side, you're out.

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im tired of all the fools saying Mike Vick is here to replace D.McNabb!!!  Are you kidding me??  McNabb was in on this.  He asked Andy Reid about bringing Vick here.  Anyone who thinks Mike Vick, after practically 3 seasons off, is going to compete with the Best QB in the NFC for a starting job is absolutely nuts!!!  Vick is here too regroup, revamp himself.  He will learn valuable life and football lessons from McNabb and the entire organization.  Mike Vick needed a second chance, and he has been granted one by the Eagles.  But thats all it is.  Please stop reading too much into this.  He will be the third-string QB, with plenty of time to play in the preseason, and maybe, just maybe, he can work into some sort of trick plays with McNabb and Vick on the field at the same time.  Other than that, he is an emergency QB.  I mean, c'mon!! The guy is not a NFL QB yet.  He was all legs, and no arm (yet he does have a cannon, but accuracy is lacking.)  He will use these two seasons with the Birds as practice, then try to parlay that into some sort of long-term contract with a new team.
Please just stop with all the BS that this is a dis to McNabb.  This is purely a chance at redemption, granted by Andy Reid- who has had some family struggles, and knows all to well about second-chances and redemption.  But in no way is it a chance to start in the NFL- at least not this season.
Now i just hope the city of brotherly love can handle all this, because this is truly hit-or-miss.

Why, Eagles?

If you know anything about football, you would know that this offense is almost identical to the offense run in Atlanta when he played.
