Can you picture this? Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, sitting on the sidelines watching his team close out a meaningless preseason game while being told the NFL's big news of the day?
"Donovan, we've signed Mike Vick," Andy Reid might have said.
"You did what?" McNabb had to say.
He has to be shocked like the rest of us. Why would the Eagles, a team that builds so well through the draft and makes good football decisions, bring in Vick? The Eagles agreed to a two-year deal with Vick Thursday night, ending the where-will-he-play talk for now.
My question is this: What's the point?
Is Vick being brought in as a backup? If that's why, it's fine. If it's to take snaps from McNabb, it's just dumb.
McNabb is a top-10 quarterback who led his team to the NFC Championship Game. He needs to be on the field all the time.
As for Vick, watching McNabb might be good for him.
Early in his career, McNabb was a run-around quarterback who wasn't a good passer. But as he's stopped running and started scrambling to throw instead of to run he's made huge strides as a passer.
Vick has to do the same, so watching and learning from McNabb might be a good thing for him. And the Eagles are a good organization for a troubled player from a stability standpoint. Of course, the Eagles fans are another story.
What I can't figure out is what Vick will do for the Eagles, unless holding a clipboard is a good exchange for dealing with the circus that will follow him.
