Rivers gets paid

There was no doubt the San Diego Chargers would take care of Philip Rivers with a new contract. The only question was how big would it be. We found out Monday when he agreed to a six-year extension worth a reported $92 million with $38 million in guaranteed money.

That's a commitment.

Then again, the Chargers are Rivers' team now.

They used to be LaDainian Tomlinson's team, but in 2008 that changed. LT sturggled and Rivers carried the Chargers.
Expect more of the same in 2009. He is an accurate passer who loves the game. Despite a strange throwing motion, he's showed a lot of people he can be an effective quarterback in the NFL.

This deal follows the $100 million deal that the Giants gave to Eli Manning last week. Rivers is better than Manning, but Manning has a ring, which is why he probably got more.

But give San Diego credit. This is their guy. We've known that. On Monday, we found out how much they truly like having him in San Diego.

Rivers is a star passer. You don't let those types of quarterbacks leave. Right, Denver?

Rivers gets paid

Rivers deserves the contract, he had a great season last year and he's a very accurate passer.  Maybe a little immature at times, and still hasn't won the big one, but when you have a good QB, you keep him.

That being said, the need to diminish Eli's accomplishments to put River's in a better light is ridiculous.  COMPLETELY different situations, and none of you have any idea how either one would do in the other's position.

Also, I find it funny how people say things like these guys are overpaid and taking up too much cap space to field competitive teams around them, and in Eli's case, the Giants traded away way too much to get him and mortgaged their future...yet in the same breath, they'll say that their success was due to their supporting cast.  Both of these guys got huge rookie contracts, and the Giants traded away several picks for Eli, yet both teams have among the best overall rosters in the league, so harping on the money they're paid or the picks traded to get them doesn't make much sense.  QB is the single most important position on the team, so that's where you start.

Rivers gets paid

Thanks irregardless,  You are supporting my agrument about not using up so much of the salary cap on one player.  The QB needs a supporting cast to be successful in this league.   I did not think I made a foolish statement regarding the 3 QB's because I was infering that Ben has had a better supporting cast to make him a 2 time super bowl champion.  Next time, try to read the whole thread not just parts of it.

Rivers gets paid

Rivers is coming from a great year, 34 td, 4000+ yards, with out a steady or healthy running back, with an injured-gates, without a clear #1 receiver. He has the character that can win games, the skills and is developing into a premier qb.
For the 04 draft, right, Big Ben has 2 rings, he carried an awesome final drive in last years SB, but hes on a team that rathers run the ball and play hard hitting deffense, so, really, he's not carrying the steelers, the D is carrying them. Eli, 1 ring on one of the must lucky-absurd-icantbelieveithappened

plays in the history of the SB (the cant hold the qb-helmet catch), but, they have an awesome D, great RB on Jacobs, again, no Eli team, you can call that superbowl on the giants deffesinve line.
Rivers, well, he has been into a AFC championship game, yes, with a torn ACL and needed surgery ust after the game ended, drove a perfect december last year, making possible a playoff run.
Great deal by SD

hopefully chargers have enough money left to sign merriman, sproles and others. obviosly its the talent surronding the qb, big ben does not win two rings without that defense.

fair point, but if you look at the stats:

brees had 500 attempts in his last year with SD.
rivers had 478 last year.

so, it's a worthy argument. not saying rivers is better (yet) but the discussion has merits when you compare the two.
When stated like that, it's a valid argument...

but don't forget, Drew Brees didn't have the Antonio Gates that we know today...I really don't know if he was even there when Drew was, but he was def. a shell of himself today...Let alone Vincent Jackson...

Phillip Rivers is at the top of the second tier of QB's in the NFL...he has a great skill set and has the fire to lead...Other than the attitude adjustment needed, I would prefer him over Eli Manning...but he hasn't stepped into the 1st Tier with Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees...yet...

If SD beats NE in the 06-07 playoffs, they very well might have beat Indy at hom and go to SB XLI.  Not Rivers fault the dude who intercepted Brady fumbled it right back.  Strange things happen.  Marty Shott was a lot like Bill Cowher, close but eventually it may have all fallen into place like it did for Cowher and Co. in 05-06 with a super bowl victory.
Great point earlier about great QBs who haven't won.  It's the TEAM that goes yay or nay --- not one person't fault.
Thankfully Jim Kelly was a HOF lock without a SB title.  Same with Marv Levy.

brees, the consensus 3rd best QB in the league had a healthy Gates and LT in his prime, and still couldn't put numbers up like rivers.

what does that say about rivers?
That says that Drew Brees had Marty at head coach...who wouldn't throw the ball as much as Norv Turner is willing to do...

Bad argument...
