Tebow the savior?

I live in Jacksonville. I covered the Jacksonville Jaguars for years as a beat man before coming to CBS Sports.com. I was there for the entire process of the NFL coming to the city.

I am there now as the team struggles to sell tickets.

But Tim Tebow isn't the answer to solving those problems. Unless he's the right player.

Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver told the Associated Press that the team would consider drafting Tebow, Florida's star quarterback.

Well, yeah.

They'd consider drafting Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy and Jevon Snead as well.

"The game is such an important part of this community, and Tebow is such an iconic figure that people would legitimately think, 'Wouldn't it be great if he was a Jaguar," Weaver said. "I'd be silly to sit here and think that's not going to be a huge thing. Clearly there's going to be a groundswell for Tebow, and we'll have to make that evaluation if we have a draft pick that's going to be anywhere near him."

Notice the word evaluation. Gene Smith, the team's general manager, had an outstanding first draft. He will pick the right player, not a player based on where he went to school.

Would picking Tebow a round or two too high make sense if he's not that good? Would fans pay to see him standing on the sidelines?

I think not.

Tebow's name is not one the coaches and personnel people inside the Jaguars building want to hear. I know. They've told me.

If he's worth a pick in the first round, they take him -- if they feel they need a quarterback. If not, you don't draft players because they're from your city or play college ball down the road.

When the Jaguars fired Tom Coughlin, there was a groundswell to bring in Steve Spurrier. Weaver didn't back down and hired Jack Del Rio. How would Spurrier have worked out?

You don't hire or draft people based on geography.

So let's slow down on the Tebow talk. And, please, don't send me anymore of those bumper stickers that implore the Jaguars to draft Tebow.

Tebow the savior?

It would not be the first time NFL scouts were fooled. I'm thinking about can't miss prospects like Alex Smith, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, and Charles Rogers.

Tebow is a great college QB, and as a Florida fan, I love watching him lead the Gators to national championships. However, I also see a lot of similarities between him and other great college QB's that didn't quite make it in the NFL. Two great QB's from Nebraska come to mind.

Given the type of QB he is vs the type of QB that succeeds in the NFL, I just don't see it happening.

Tebow the savior?

You must not watch football or follow the draft....Spread option QB's suck...See Alex Smith and Vince Young. Vince Young is infinitely more talented than Tebow. In college he was a gamebreaker Tebow wasnt...He put Texas on his back and led them to victory over a great USC team and in the Rose Bowl. Tim was pretty average in the BCS title game and Harvin should have been the MVP. Tebow is a great college QB. But in the NFL he isn't even a thrid string QB. Poor mechanics, poor accuracy and an inability to read defenses will ensure he is 3rd or 4th round pick.

Tebow is the hometown favorite AND the right pick

While Prisco makes a valid point that the Jaguars shouldn't draft a player purely based on geography, that is not the case with Tim Tebow.  Many people question his ability to succeed in and NFL offense, but I disagree.  While I don't think Tebow will become the next Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady, I do think he has the size, strength, intelligence, competitiveness, and work ethic to be a quality QB in the NFL.  With the right coaching staff to support him, you know Tebow will work until he drops to be successful.  So, with these qualities that Tebow brings, combined with the fact that he's a hometown favorite, it sounds like a solid pick for the Jags.

Tebow the savior?

it's a fact Tebow will be drafted next year.Probably before pick #20 in the first round.Stellar play this year could move him higher. He has great touch and highly accurate passing ability.Ticket sales would immediately increase if he lands in Jax.Peyton Manning takes most snaps in shotgun formation.QB's have a better view of the defense lined up in s-gun.Just don't take him in the 8th spot.

Tebow the savior?

Vic Ketchman, Pete Prisco, and I all agree about Tim Teblow.  3 for 3 means the Jags shouldn't draft him.

Tebow the savior?

i live in jacksonville too, i'm also a season ticket holder. one thing i can't stand is the play of their QB. I do believe that the jags have the worst QB in the NFL. so any Qb they draft would be better than david.

Tebow the savior?

never thought i would agree with prisco but for once i do. i lived in jax for 5 years and was a jags season ticket holder.  jax is gator town and tebow would provide a ticket boost but so would a winning team.  i don't think tebow would make them a winner and he would be a short term ticket fix.  they need to build a winner to get the fans long term.  the jags have a strong nucleus to build from - bring in boldin who went to fl state and add an impact guy on defense.  the jags aren't far from having a consistent winner - stay the course and supplement where needed, don't chase ticket sales.

Tebow the savior?

I live in Jacksonville as well, and I'm a huge fan of the Jags. Seeing all those empty seats in the stadium really concerns me as I would hate to see them move anywhere else. Whether or not Tim Tebow would become a marquee player in the NFL remains to be seen, but there is no doubt in my mind that Tebow would energize this fan base like no other player before him. Most of the people in Jacksonville are Florida Gator fans, and practically worship the ground he walks on. Wayne Weaver knows drafting this kid would send the Jags fan base in a frenzy....all the way to the ticket window. I was telling a friend the other day that I want to see the Jags draft Tebow just so he can sell tickets. Let's face Tebow is a first round choice regrdless, someone will scoop him up. I believe that as of now he would get drafted somewhere in the teens, most likely as the 3rd QB chosen after McCoy and Bradford. If thats the case he is definitely worth the pick. The JAgs need something or someone to get this fan base excited. Only Tebow can bring that sort of instant gratification. I believe Tebow will be, at least, a serviceable QB in the NFL. He could be somewhat comparable to some of the mobile quarterbacks in the league. Either way, the Jags could do a lot worse than drafting Tebow, but only Tebow would be able to sell all those empty seats.
