Browns QB: Does it matter?

So the Cleveland Browns are turning to Derek Anderson at quarterback (story here ) and sitting down Brady Quinn? I bet Browns fans would like to see Eric Mangini and owner Randy Lerner sit down ... together on a plane out of town.

The Browns are horrible and sitting Quinn down for a guy who threw three interceptions last week makes no sense. It doesn't matter if Otto Graham walked in now in his prime, the Browns would still stink. Why? There are no weapons for the quarterback. Who do they throw to? Who runs it? A slow-to-the-hole Jamal Lewis? Jerome Harrison? Or rookie James Davis. No passing game means no running game either.

It's not just the quarterback. I always say a franchise passer can cure your ills. But not here. We haven't seen either of these passers look like one of those, but even if they were there are still too many issues.

It starts with Mangini. He's too uptight. He plays the mind games that players hate.

At least he made this decision known on Wednesday this time, instead of playing that stupid game he played in Week 1 where he thought he was being smart not letting his decision out for competititve reasons.

Again, does it matter?

Bring back Bernie Kosar or Brian Sipe in their primes. The Browns wouldn't be good with them either. This team isn't good. The offense is awful.

How's that decision to bring in Mangini, Lerner? Just like many thought it would be.

Not good.

Browns QB: Does it matter?

I agree with you, if you can't decide who is going be the Quarterback from one week to the next, what's everyone else going to expect. You're not going to have any consistency, you're not going to win very many games, you're going to lose fans, you're going to go to the next man up method on a team that has no direction. Who's to blame, the GM, the Coach, who is it going to fall on. Brady failed just like Derek will fail. This team is in turmoil with no one to lead them. Eric Mangini is not and won't be the answer to this teams problems because if he doesn't get it right right now, he'll be part of the problem. So I say the next man up to fix this problem with a history of putting together a good team and no QB is sitting on his behind with no job and that's Brian Billick. Who else would be better qualified?
I don't care where he is on your staff preferably head coach, but he needs to be there to give this team something to build on.

It's not just Mangini, it's the Coordinators he brought with him....
The Offensive Coordinator has ZERO experience (he was a WR coach for 3 years and a QB coach for 1) and the Defensive Coordinator ran the only defense to give up more rushing TD's than the Browns in the past 5 years...
And what was with that QB sneak called on 1st and 10? That's just a little too Pop Warner.....

MANGINI HAS TO BE REELING WITH THIS TEAM. HATE AND RESENTMENT THAT HE IS NOT IN NEW YORK ENJOYING THE JETS REVIVAL BUT EVERY WARRIOR LOVES A BATTLE... MY CHIEFS ARE NO DIFFERENT BUT AT LEAST HALEY\PIOLI HAVE A VISION AND ARE STICKING WITH IT. I AGREE MR. MANGINI NEEDS TO REASSESS HIS SITUATION AND FIND A FEW LIGHTS IN THE DARKNESS.

At least Anderson's proven he can throw 29 TD passes in an NFL season.  I didn't think he deserved to be benched last year after Braylon Edwards dropped what would have been a perfectly thrown 65 yard bomb that would have put the Browns up by 20 against the Ratbirds (Browns were winning 27-14 at that point).  On the very next play, Anderson threw an INT to Hala Nagoti that was returned for a TD that instead closed the margin to 6.  The Ratbirds ended up winning that game 37-27 and Anderson got benched (before making a second appearance later that season after a Quinn injury, only to get hurt himself).

Fact is, Lerner doesn't have a clue about what he's doing.  He hired Mangenius right out of the gate without waiting to see what other coaches would be available and without having a GM, before finding a GM willing to tolerate a head coach that wasn't his pick.  Then again, Browns ownership has been completely incompetent since Art Modell bought the team and fired Paul Brown in 1963 because he was so worried that Brown (who only elevated the concept of the forward pass to an art form) was upstaging him.  New York gets George Steinbrenner (from Cleveland) and we get Art Modell (from New York).  That was a fair trade.  One guy goes to continue overseeing MLB's most successful franchise, the other shows up and runs one of the most successful NFL franchises at the time straight into the ground.  Ironic that Cleveland didn't become the "Mistake by the Lake" until Modell showed up and took a team that had won 7 NFL titles in 17 years and ran it into the ground.  Or is it?

The Browns are the only team that has managed to get worse each successive week so far.  I don't know why Mangenius is even bothering with Anderson.  He should just go ahead and put in Ratliff.  You know that's what he really wants to do.  Every time I see the Browns play, I hear the same song running through my head - "Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who.  "Meet the new boss/Same as the old boss."  I've really had it with all this low hanging "fruit" from the Bill Bellicose coaching tree and a generation plus of completely incompetent ownership, and it kills me to watch Ozzie Newsome overseeing Ratface's team while we have to put up with this expansion nonsense.

Browns are bad, no question about that.  I agree, Mangini has this silly hide-and-seek mentality with his team and the press. It's stupid and demoralizes the team's effectiveness as a playing unit.  He should have named his QB long, long befor ethe season started so all personnel could have had some direction.  Then when it didn't work out, the change could be made once the plan failed,, IMO, Anderson is the better QB because he has had more NFL game experience, not because he's so much of a betterQB.. He can drive a team downfield and score, and  he's proven that already in the past.  Let him get in there and prove it. Browns need points to overcome a disastrous defense that cannot stop the other team from scoring.  Do it now!!!

The offense is offensive to say the least.  Look around, it seems to be the pattern around the NFL, after 3 games if your team is struggling change something.   The offense was not converting 3rd downs and Quinn was shy throwing down field. Quinn's short passes was easy to defend, stack the box and at the same time you shut down the run.  You can't just cross your arms and do nothing. The timing of the move is good.

Since the offense could not stay on the field the D suffered. If the D weren’t on the field so much it would have much better stats.

In comes Derek Anderson at half time last Sunday down 20-0. Playing catch up against the Baltimore D is the wrong way to start. Also consider he was not taking snaps with the starters during practice. Yes there will be INT's but there will be no hesitation to throw down field and loosen up D's. Maybe the running game will come to life.

honestly, derek anderson is better than quinn at this point. yes anderson threw three interceptions in just two quarters of play.  but the guy was moving the ball and converting third downs, something that quinn did not even come close to doing.  fact of the matter is.  brady cant throw the long ball. derek can.  and derek isnt afraid to convert a 3rd and 15 like brady seems he is.  the browns may win 2 or 3 games this year at the most though.  their offensive line stinks though.

Give me a break!  It doesn't matter who the Browns put under center.  It'll be a disaster.
