---I can't believe the outrage over the decision by Colts coach Jim Caldwell to sit down his starters against the Jets with a 15-10 lead in the second half. He didn't have to play them at all, but he did. I wouldn't have.  That's the right of the coach. All those fans of teams that the game impacted need to shut their mouths. If their teams had taken care of business along the way, they wouldn't have needed the help of the Colts. I keep hearing integrity of the game stuff, but that's absurd. We know the Colts have clinched the No. 1 seed. Caldwell could have started all backups, and nobody should have said a word. The Jets can now get into the playoffs with a victory against the Bengals. That's why the Steelers and Texans and Broncos might not be happy. Too bad. The Colts don't need to apologize to anybody. It's about winning the Super Bowl. Not going undefeated. And for those of you trying to throw fuel on the fire by implying that Peyton Manning wasn't happy about the decision, I don't think that's true. I talked to Manning after the Colts beat the Jaguars 10 days ago, and he was much more concerned about the playoffs than an unbeaten season. And he meant it. The Colts had the right to do what they did. It's happened before and it will happen again. What if the Patriots rest Tom Brady this week at Houston because they'd rather have the No. 4 seed than the No. 3 seed? Isn't that the same thing? You do what's best for your football team, the rest of the league and their fans be damned.

---The talk of Bill Cowher to Tampa Bay makes sense. The Glazer family loves going after big names. Remember the Bill Parcells pursuit? They traded away a bounty of draft picks to get Jon Gruden. And Raheem Morris hasn't exactly wowed them. But I have to say this: Why did you hire him if you're not going to give him a fair shot? The Bucs have won back-to-back road games, including beating the Saints Sunday. And they've played much of the season with a rookie quarterback. I'm not sure Morris is the next great coach, but I think he deserves another year.

---Never thought I'd say this, but I think Eric Mangini does as well. The Browns have won three consecutive games. They're playing better. And if Mike Holmgren's top option is to replace him with Marty Mornhinweg -- the league rumor -- I don't think that's any better.

---Now that the Packers have solidified that offensive line, watch out for them in the playoffs. Aaron Rodgers has been on fire. The Packers play a meaningless game at Arizona this week and might play there again the next week. Rodgers had had a great season, proving once again that the Packers made the right decision when they jettisoned the selfish old man last year. Rodgers is the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 4,000 yards in his first two seasons as a starter. Not even the egomaniac old guy did that.

---For the past two seasons, the same problems have hurt the Jacksonville Jaguars. They can't pass the ball well enough and they can't rush the passer. You can't have that in a passing league. They have to get a new quarterback. And despite the public talk by the staff backing David Garrard last week, don't believe it. The Jaguars will draft a quarterback early if they can next spring. The organization made a mistake giving Garrard a big contract two years ago. He is due to make close to $10 million next season. If he doesn't take a pay cut, he will be gone. The Jaguars brass now knows it can't win a Super Bowl with him as their quarterback. The problem is they don't have a second-round pick, traded away last spring for the right to draft starting corner Derek Cox, who has played well as a rookie. That means they can't address their top two needs in the first two rounds. Quarterback or pass rusher? The quarterback cures more ills, but the Jaguars have 14 sacks in 15 games. I'd still go for the quarterback.

---You have to feel for Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis. He suffered a severe neck injury last spring when the Cowboys practice facility collapsed and then had an emergency appendectomy Sunday before the Cowboys game with the Redskins. DeCamillis is a good guy who has kept a good attitude through it all. When I saw him this summer during camp, he couldn't shake my hand because he still had issues from his neck surgery. Here's wishing one of the good guys a speedy recovery.

--The Bengals will have to play the rest of the way without Rey Maualuga, who suffered a broken ankle in Cincinnati's victory over the Chiefs Sunday. Maualuga has been playing well for the Bengals, and he will be missed. He's been a solid player against the run who had improved against the pass as the season went along.

---The Rams will pick first in the draft. Take a quarterback. Forget all the talk about Ndamukong Suh going first to the Rams. It's time to take a quarterback first -- if there is one they like.

---Speaking of quarterbacks in next year's draft, I still think Washington's Jake Locker will change his mind and enter the draft. He might be the first player picked. Why go back to school?

---I hate to say I told you so -- no, not really -- but I told you the Wildcat would be dead by the end of the season. Where is it? What has happened to it? It's like those Members Only jackets. Both came, looked good for a while, and then disappeared. The Wildcat is dead. Amen.

---I'm not sure the Dallas Cowboys aren't the best team in the NFC. One coach I talked to thinks the Cowboys are the best team, especially the way they're playing now.

----Still think Tony Romo is overrated? Didn't think so.

---Seattle has to replace Matt Hasselbeck. He looks old and washed up. He threw four picks in each of the past two games. They have to draft a quarterback. But who does the drafting now that Tim Ruskell is gone? If they're smart, they get a football man who came up through the scouting ranks. Somebody like Steve Keim of Arizona or Eric DeCosta of the Ravens.

----The Saints, like I've said many times, are flawed on defense. With so many good offenses in the NFC playoffs, that will hurt them in a big way. Charles Grant, one of their defensive ends, does nothing. The Bucs moved up and down the field on them Sunday. So did the Redskins a month ago, and they can't score on anybody. The Saints have three weeks to fix it. Would it shock you to see them lose next week at Carolina? If they do, the NFC Playoffs will probably go through Minnesota. Can you hear the media crying already? New Orleans or Minneapolis in January?

---I think Gary Kubiak has saved his job with the Texans. They have a lot of talent on that team. If they don't make the playoffs next season, he will be gone. That's a certainty. They do need to fix the secondary.

---Watching the Cardinals-Rams game, Arizona better hope their tackles play better in the playoffs. Jeremy Bridges and Levi Brown struggled against an injury-depleted Rams front.

Monday Musings

The problem with Indy willfully throwing away a shot at a perfect season is that they are adopting a mentality that has proven time, and time, and time again to be a losing mentality in the NFL.  The difference between winning and losing games in the playoffs is miniscule.  You need to be physically and mentally at the top of your game.  How many times have you seen teams shut it down the last few weeks of the season and then find they can't start it back up whenever need it!  Indy's good, but they are likely not that good!

Indy got to 14-0 by being a hungry team.  They were slightly better than the teams they played.  They had an edge.   They should have gone ahead and played to 16-0 as a hungry team, taken their week off (ie the Bye) and then come out sharp and hungry in the playoffs!  Instead, they are now shutting it down mentally for 3 freaking weeks!  Good luck getting it back Indy.

Witness Pittsburgh last year.  They put it all on the line in Week 17, beating Cleveland 31-0.  Rothlisberger even got hurt in the game.  The point is Mike Tomlin felt it was important to close the season on a WINNING note.  He took it seriously.  That attitude carried over into the Playoffs.

It just seems that the teams that win the Super Bowl are the teams building momentum by WINNING games at the end of the season!  Not the teams losing games, and especially not the ones willfully throwing away opportunities to win games.  Notice the debacle of the Indy faithful booing the team at the end of that loss to the Jets.  That's not a recipe for success my friends!

$50 that Indy loses their first game in the Playoffs.  They may even get beat badly!

Hey Prisco, I take it that you dont compete in anything. When you play a game, especially one that you are paid to do so by the revenue generated by the fans, you play to win. When you are a professional football team your goal is to win the game, no exuses. Resting the starter does not work. The Colts proved that a few years ago when they were a much better team. They even showed it in the first half of the Jets game. A 10 day layoff did not help them. They should have been up by more that 5 points before setting anyone. They did not look good and were not clicking like a Superbowl bound team should look. Now not owing anything to the fans? Yeah right. Who paid for that stadium that they are playing in? The players? No. The League? No. They Fans? Yes. The players in every sport owe everything they have to the fans. So when the fans want a Win. They need to give them one. Not let a weak Jets team in the playoffs with a late Christmas gift. As far as resting being beneficial to a player. Yes, it is when you are hurt but when there is nothing wrong with you then you should still be on the field. I know Peyton wanted to play. He kept his helmet on the whole time. They are competitors and did not want to lose when they knew that they would win.
Next time Prisco. Keep your worthless comments off the internet.

Why is it that nobody is considering for a second the possibility that the Jets just might have beaten the Colts regadless of whether Payton played the whole game or not? If I were a Jets fan, I would be outraged by the overwhelming attitude that the Colts winning this game was a foregone conclusion. What a crock. The Jets put up a strong second half and won that game.

What does it say about the Colts that they can't win without ONE player? Seriously, If that's the case, then the Cots are a poor team.

Didn't the Chargers BEAT the Colts in the play-offs not long ago after falling behind Payton and Co. and having to rely on BILLY VOLEK to lead them to victory?

Yes.

Billy Volek people... Billy Volek beat the Colts WITH Payton IN THE PLAY OFFS.

lt;![endif]-->Are you serious??  Two of your first three reasons what the Colts did was wrong are 1) Fantasy Football and 2) Gambling!??  I've heard a lot of pros and cons to what the Colts did yesterday, but you my friend take the cake.  What a pathetic argument.  As for the other teams in the league, they should have won a couple more games and maybe they wouldn't need the Colts to help them out.  To them I say, look in the mirror to find the reason your season was a failure.  As for your first reason it was wrong, Team Confidence, if they come out first series in the playoffs (healthy) and run straight down the field and score; then the defense (again healthy) stops the other team 3 and out do you think they will   suffer some confidence issue?  I think not.  I can't wait for the playoffs to start.  GO COLTS!

Monday Musings

Prisco is an idiot for buying into the idea Polian is selling that it is better to rest your starters for the last several games after clinching home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  One look at Manning's face after he was pulled was all I needed to see he was pissed, and rightfully so.  Caldwell fell on the sword because Polian told him to.  As much respect as anyone should have for Polian for making the Colts what they are does not mean every decision he makes is right.  Let's remember that Polian's belief that resting players at the end of the season was based on his experience with the Buffalo Bills.  How much good did it do them?  None.  They went to four straight Super Bowls and lost four straight.  Indy has also lost more in the playoffs than one would expect because Polian insists on resting players.  Just look at Pittsburgh's win over Indy, in Indy several years ago.  Pittsburgh was battle and playoff tested and ran the table as a wild card.  Indy rested players, and that may have been the year Dungy's son died, but anyone watching that game knew that Pittsburgh was the hungrier, more aggressive team.  The only Indy Super Bowl win was against my team, the Bears with Rex Grossman at quarterback.  Enough said.  This year the Chargers are hitting their stride at the right time.  The Patriots have allowed only 26 points over the last three games.  You think a couple more weeks off, including the bye week they already get, will help their offense, which is based solely on timing.  Add to that the fact that two of their receivers are rookies, they have less of a running game than years past and their defense can't stop the run and it seems to me they lose their first game, one and done.  They need to be improving, not coasting.  They need to be hitting people not getting soft.  Its really unfortunate Polian will continue to make the same mistake over and over and rob the best quarterback in history of championship victories.  Remember, Peyton Manning is the only reason the Colts are where they are.  Period.  He doesn't need the practice, but the rest of the players around him do and without it they will fall.

Caldwell screwed his own fans

A family of four shells out $600 to watch their team INTENTIONALLY try not to win.  Champions play the game to win, period.  Yes, you can sit him if they're up by a couple touchdowns.  But what they did was sad for the franchise.  Sad for the fans.  And sad for the game.

I think you are WAY off the mark in regards to the Colts "game" vs. the Jets.  Here's why: 1)  Yes, the Colts have a history of resting starters after clinching their division, a bye week, and home field advantage.  The problem is: IT DOESN'T WORK!!  The Colts have made it to the Super Bowl ONCE using this strategy.  The rest of the times they've lost in the play-off's.  2) You can't tell me the players aren't at least disappointed, if not pissed off they weren't given the chance to make history. This could easily carry over to next week and beyond. 3) It killed their momentum.  Even with their perfect record, the Colts were playing far from perfect.  They came very close to losing several games (some due to uncharacteristic Manning interceptions).  They still could stand to work out some kinks in their running game.  4) Throwing in the towel in the 3rd quarter of a very winnable game was a slap in the face to Colts fans.  They paid good money to watch their team, and were rewarded with Jim Caldwell treating the 2nd half like a pre-season game.
