Vanden Bosch a risk

Posted on: March 5, 2010 11:58 am

If I told you that you could sign a 31-year-old defensive end with 7 1/2 sacks in his last 26 games, none in his last five, would you be willing to give him a four-year deal worth $26 million?

I didn't think so.

That's exactly what the Detroit Lions did when they agreed to a deal with Tennessee Titans defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch on a four-year contract Friday, a deal conformed by Vanden Bosch on a Nashville radio station.

Vanden Bosch is an effort player who had 12 1/2 sacks in 2005 and 12 sacks in 2007, both with Tennessee. In his other three seasons with the Titans, he combined to have 14 sacks.

Vanden Bosch turns 32 in November. Too many times we've seen pass rushers who are 30-plus years fall off the ledge. There have been 17 pass rushers aged 30 or older who have finished in the top 10 in sacks the past 10 years.

Four repeated.

And some of those had much more athletic ability than Vanden Bosch. When a guy gets by on his grit and effort, which Vanden Bosch did, it's probably tougher to sustain as you age.

I know the Lions are desperate for pass rushers and coach Jim Schwartz knows Vanden Bosch well, having coached him when he was the defensive coordinator of the Titans.

Vanden Bosch is a good locker-room guy for a young team, but if history is an indicator -- and it usually is -- they're paying for a player who won't give them what they need.

I Am Done

This is the last time I read any article written by Prisco.  I will spend my time reading articles written by real sportswriters on other sites.

Ok Prisco, use your head before you write, who did you expect the Lions could do? Get a 23 yr old stud, what free agent in their right mind would go to the Lions? Lions have to overpay to get talent, you think Albert Haynesworth would of gone to the Lions? how about Julius Peppers? You're a moron, the Lions are already at a disadvantage in the free agent market by just being the Lions, of course he's a risk, those are the only types of players the Lions can get, also by overpaying.

That's not WMU Bronco is saying.  He's saying, lets get two years out of him.  What will that really cost?  About 6 to 12 more sacks than anyone else has produced?  No one is expecting him to stay for four years, nor be productive for four years.  He's a nice shot to a defense that needs line help, badly, and needs it quick.  If he performs in a 6-7 sack range over two years, it was worth it, as well as mentoring young up and comers.  He'll be lucky to see the full value of this "4" year contract.

Vanden Bosch a risk

You remind me of Skip Bayless in so many ways. I don't even know if you truly believe half of what you say, or it's just a ploy to keep your mediocre writing interesting.  Kyle V.B is not only a tremendous upgrade from anything we currently have, I ask, who else should we of picked up? I'm not saying we didn't overpay, but you make it sound like it was a horrible move. It's great to see the Lions concern themselves more with winning than their payroll.

Face it Prisco, the Lions have to pay a premium for people to play for them, especially good players.  Great signing by Detroit.

Vanden Bosch a risk

It's a good move by the Lions. They needed talent in the front four and Vanden Bosch gives them that. He will be a good rotational player to mentor some of the younger guys and with the addition of Suh or Mccoy, he could have a 7-8 sack type of season for Detriot. If they make smart signings like this and the Burlenson one, they will be a team that contends for a playoff spot soon.
