Stiff suspension for Ben

Ben Roethlisberger's suspension for four-to-six games is about right. But you have to wonder how the league will sell this one to the NFL Players Association.

After all, he hasn't been charged with anything, except being stupid.

There were no formal charges in either case of alleged sexual misconduct against Roethlisberger. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is free by the laws of the land, even if he isn't by the rules of the NFL.

For that reason, I thought the league would allow the Steelers to handle the suspension of their quarterback.

As it is, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is ready to slap the suspension on Roethlisberger for violating the league's conduct code.

I understand it. But at the core, other than stupidity, why is he being suspended? There wasn't even arrest. What he did is deplorable -- if true -- but who can prove it true without a court case.

Essentially he is being suspended for drinking with girls in a bar. If that's the case, most of the NFL should sit out four games.

The suspension is bad news for Steelers fans. They will have to play a quarter of the season, unless the suspension is reduced, without their two-time winning Super Bowl quarterback.

The winner in this is Byron Leftwich.

The Steelers traded a seventh-round pick to Tampa Bay Tuesday to get Leftwich, who was the backup to Roethlisberger for the 2008 season.

He knows the offense. The players in the locker room like him. He will be fine.
As for Roethlisberger, here's hoping losing a quarter of his pay and hurting his teammates helps change him.

I doubt it will.

Stiff suspension for Ben

The first part of your statement makes sense, but to criticize his play is idiotic, and to say he played terribly in superbowls show zero knowledge of the game. He played bad in SB vs Seattle, in SB vs Arizona he was outstanding and put the team on his back in the final drive.

Stick to the subject at hand
Ben is not a good person, but a fantastic football player

Stiff suspension for Ben

First of all 20 years old is not underage for sex just drinking, and again would like to say that these girls knew exactly what they were doing. It probably didn't turn out the way these girls wanted it, but to tell me they didn't know who he was until he was hanging out with them is a croc. Girls like them do this sought of stuff that's how sad america has turn into, Ben's judgement is horrible and he's got to understand that he can't do this kind of stuff. But this happens all the time and he has to watch his step and use better judgement. If Goodell wants to sent a statement then he should have tell the Rooney's that is yese our problem and I'll agree or stand by YOUR decision. Six Games is crazy and none of these other athletes have done this. Then the eyes only want to be open when they want to be. I really hope this happens during Super Bowl Week and let's see if Goodell sits the starting QB than.

Stiff suspension for Ben

Hey Pete ---- Poor Ben was just drinking at a bar with some girls and Vick was just letting some dogs play together... you are so bright i am sure you know that the allegations are just a bunch of bull .. Of course it should be okay to get under age women drunk and fullfill thier dreams of making it with a pro football superstar.. They should be honored just to have his hands on them ...How blind do you have to be not to see his actions are stupid , arrogant , criminal and a total embarrassment to the Steelers, thier fans and to the rset of the NFL.

Stiff suspension for Ben

My dad, father of two girls, has been a Steelers fan his whole life. Actually a fan of any Pittsburgh sport (even the Pirates). He was born and raised there. Even though he is a fan, he would love to see the Steelers trade Ben. He does not care if he helps bring wins or even super bowls to the Steelers, he does not want to win with a "shady, scum bag" on the team.

Makes me Sick

It never said girls, it was one underage girl. Also I do not if you have ever been to a bar before, but it is the bars responsibility to ensure its patrons are 21.  I doubt Ben ever asked if the girl was 21.  Second,  I think Prisco is a jackass, but I completely agree with him.

You cannot suspend someone for allegations.  If charges were files maybe.  Also how can you say there is a history, when in the last case they found out the girl involved was hoping for a "little Ben."

Screw the NFL's image this is completely wrong.  If charges had been brought against him I would agree charges should be filed.  I would hate to lose 3/8 of my paycheck because someome accused me of something.  If its true I feel sorry for that girl, but the moral of the story is you do not, neither does Goodell.   This whole thing makes me sick.

Stiff suspension for Ben

They did not suspend him because he committed a crime, the suspended him because he did not follow the leagues code of conduct. Don't confuse the two.

I do not know this girl and I do not know Ben R either. I do not think it is right how Steeler fans are trying to protray her as a tramp or gold digger. She supposedly went directly to find a police officer right after the encounter occurred. I think that the police officer let her down and got what he deserved when he resigned.

The girl was more than likely intoxicated as is being shown by her different statements but it still not right for a man to take advantage of a girl who is drunk. I think the first accusation against Ben can be put down as a woman trying to extort money but this girl never asked for a think from Ben and may have been raped by the Steeler quarterback but only Ben and the accuser know for sure, Ben as I have said before needs to grow up.

"Essentially he is being suspended for drinking with girls in a bar."

Actually, he's being suspended for having sex (which neither he or the girl have denied) in a public bathroom (or where ever it was) and allowing himself to get in this situation again.  And while the specifics probably aren't spelled out in the NFL Code of Conduct policy, come on...does it have to be?

Or maybe nothing should be done until he is charged with rape?

I'm not wishing ill will on the guy, but man...he has got to pull his head out and get with the program.  Hopefully this will be his wake up call and he can move on.
