Russell the reason he failed

Posted on: May 6, 2010 5:54 pm

Pick the way JaMarcus Russell celebrated being released by the Oakland Raiders:

--With two double-cheeseburgers and fries.

---With two large pizzas.

---By rolling in his $39 million that he stole from the team.

---All of the above.

Russell was released by the Raiders Thursday, cementing him for now as the biggest draft bust in NFL history. The Raiders picked him first overall in the 2007 draft with the idea he would be a franchise player.

He was: Fast-food franchise all-star.

Russell didn't put the work in, which is why he failed. It's that simple. If Russell worked, kept his body in shape, studied film, he'd still be in the league. He'd be starting for the Raiders.

But he didn't care. And it showed.

Now he's out of work.

I talked to Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher last week and asked him about Russell's lack of work ethic. He was astounded, saying he never saw any of that when he was the offensive coordinator at LSU when Russell played there.

Russell can turn things around. He can get in shape. He can make himself a starter again.
If he doesn't, he will go down as the biggest bust ever, just ahead of Ryan Leaf.

If that happens, he can blame his mouth.

Better yet, what he put into it.

Agreed, Chargers gave up more for Leaf, and I believe his numbers are worse. Russell may be a #1 pick but that's because they couldn't trade down. Leaf had way more expectations than Russell did.

Nope, Ryan Leaf still the biggest bust ever.

The difference is the fact that the Chargers mortgaged their future to draft Leaf. They traded two first-round picks, a second-round pick, Eric Metcalf and Patrick Sapp to move up in the draft to get Leaf. Let's not forget how Ryan Leaf destroyed the Chargers' locker room (nearly literally one time) and brought a media circus to San Diego.

Russell just got fat and lazy and complacent. He didn't actively work to cripple team chemistry.
