Russell the reason he failed

Posted on: May 6, 2010 5:54 pm

Pick the way JaMarcus Russell celebrated being released by the Oakland Raiders:

--With two double-cheeseburgers and fries.

---With two large pizzas.

---By rolling in his $39 million that he stole from the team.

---All of the above.

Russell was released by the Raiders Thursday, cementing him for now as the biggest draft bust in NFL history. The Raiders picked him first overall in the 2007 draft with the idea he would be a franchise player.

He was: Fast-food franchise all-star.

Russell didn't put the work in, which is why he failed. It's that simple. If Russell worked, kept his body in shape, studied film, he'd still be in the league. He'd be starting for the Raiders.

But he didn't care. And it showed.

Now he's out of work.

I talked to Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher last week and asked him about Russell's lack of work ethic. He was astounded, saying he never saw any of that when he was the offensive coordinator at LSU when Russell played there.

Russell can turn things around. He can get in shape. He can make himself a starter again.
If he doesn't, he will go down as the biggest bust ever, just ahead of Ryan Leaf.

If that happens, he can blame his mouth.

Better yet, what he put into it.

Russell the reason he failed

Crud, you are right about 2k. 1999 was a wash, and 2001 he went to Dallas.

So i'm a dumb-dumb this time.

Russell the reason he failed

Also, wasn't Leaf taken ahead of Peyton Manning? If so, that makes Leaf a even bigger disappointment.

No, Peyton Manning (and JaMarcus Russell) was number 1 overall.

The Chargers desperately tried to move up to the top spot, but obviously the Colts knew why, and wanted to draft Manning.

Ryan Leaf was selected with the number 2 overall pick acquired from the Cardinals.

Russell the reason he failed

Everyone stop looking at th just the $39m the raiders spent on this chump and put it in perspective.

#1 it aint' your money so what do you care? the money had to be spent somewhere, and a lot of starting QBs take in more than $39 over three years. big corporations piss away $39m in bad investments in one day before you've put on your mcdonalds uniform.

#2 the raiders paid what a #1 pick QB usually gets despite not knowing how good they'll be in the nfl. stafford got $41m guaranteed. it's more of the systems fault than the raiders for how much they paid him... they're just on the hook for the pick itself. the top picks get frickin' paid, no matter what happens.

#3 why smash the raiders but not the panthers who basically paid jake delhomme $12.9m for 2010 when they cut him after paying him $6m for 2009? and this is a 35 year old player who proved he stunk and he still got a new deal. and then the browns were dumb enough to sign him for another $7m ... so he's getting paid $20m this year! rookie busts are less pathetic than free agent signings (oh and the raiders suck at that too... javon walker anyone?)

#3 the nfl makes so much cash that these busts don't matter at the end of the day ... jamarcus got $39 mil ? so what Al owns a huge stake (67%) in a team worth $800 million with only 7% debt (according to Forbes) and they are the least valued!!! Oh, and he paid peanuts for it.

Owners make mistakes, hand out tons of money in a stupid fashion but they haul in more than their fair share too... which bank account would you rather have?

Russell the reason he failed

LMFAO! exactly....You nailed it. Everybody is hatin on Russel by calling him fat, dumb and lazy but the truth is he never has to work again. Ever. He just has to invest his money in expensive stocks like apple and microsoft and watch the money accumulate. I'll take 39 million to be labeled a jerk for a year or whenever this blows over and be a punchline. Meanwhile I get to do whatever I want with my 39 million LOL
Never have to work again? Don't be so sure... taxes, agents, lifestyle change... he's 24 and not very bright. he pisses that away and he'll be 55 and broke w/o smart investments.

Rocket Ismail earned $20 mil ... bankrupt. Lawrence Taylor earned $50 mil ... bankrupt and buying $300 underage girls. Travis Henry earned $20 mil ... broke and in jail. Kenny Anderson earned $60 mil ... bankrupt. Scottie Pippen earned $120 mil ... bankrupt. Sprewell, Vick, Mike Tyson. The list goes on.

And you'll never sniff $39k let alone $39m, so stop giving financial advice to JaMarcus, it's sad because you have no clue what you're talking about.

Russell the reason he failed

All NFL rookies should only be allowed to play for the league minimum and should have to stay on the same team for at least 3 years, period.

I stand corrected on the roster

My apologies on relying an apparently fuzzy memory on the roster.

The Trent Green comment had more to do with if we hadn't cut him; we wouldn't have needed a QB so badly
Humphries rating before we drafted Leaf was 70.8 and Whelihan was 58 with Freddie Jones/Tony Martin

Leaf first year, yes Natrone got 880 yards, which the only offensive highlight to a 5-11 team
Leaf rating with Freddie/Charlie Jones was a sad 39 which was out done by Whelihan 48
Leaf down for 1999, I believe when his jaw was broken. Harbaugh manned up with a passer rating of 70
with a pitiful rushing attack by Fazande. Reciveing led by Jeff Graham/Freddie Jones

Like all bad colds Leaf comes back in 2000. Harbaugh posts a 74 rating to Leaf 56. Rushing attack led by Fletcher and Fazande gets a little over 700 yards between them. Graham and Jones was the recieving core. Conway was on the roster at this time

At no time during Leaf unmemorable stay was there a 1000 yd back or reciver. While an experienced QB did much better than the rookie, but a 70 rating was hardly worth breaking down Canton.

I don't hate Seau, I watched at Oceanside and at USC. I dislike abit of what he had become, he certainly was unhappy before Marty got here. He had sat out on his rookie contract for 34 days when they contract was up, the same scenario went over again. He felt the Chargers should have paid him and they may have been true. His attitude when Ryan Leaf was drafted and paid more than him was apparent; he could have taken a mentor role but he choose to keep the defense does it job mentality. Seau was a great player, a great defensive captian; but had shortcomings as a team leader.

The year after Leaf left we drafted LT who had a breakout year of 1200 yds and Flutie had a passer rating of 72, we were still 5-11 with Riley in charge. The following year with Marty we went 8-8, with brees posting a 76 rating and LT 1600 yards

While I didn't polish my stats appropriately, my point was there plenty of blame to go around. I don't dislike Seau, but the coaches never sat on his ego till Marty did. The coaches mishandled, miscalled while everyone was content to blame the Leaf the QB....it was a lousy team physically, mentally and coaches should have taken more of the blame.

As far Leaf goes, I wouldn't have drafted him; because my personal opinion QB get too much credit and too much blame for a team.
Every rookie QB should start as dead last on the depth chart and prove themselves up after sitting a year
