Mike Vick? Really?

Posted on: September 21, 2010 6:07 pm

Mike Vick is the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Is Andy Reid really giving up on Kevin Kolb that quickly? Vick has played well in his two appearances, but you don't trade away Donovan McNabb with the idea of making Kolb your long-term solution and then give up on it after one half of football.

You know what you have in Vick: A wonderfully athletic player that can do amazing things with his feet but is limited with his ability to be a quality passer.

Vick has never been a good passer. This is a passing league -- more even than when he was the starter in Atlanta.

Kolb suffered a concussion in the opening loss to the Green Bay Packers. Vick came in and played well and then played well in a start last week at Detroit. But the Lions aren't good on defense. Then again, neither are the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Eagles opponent this week.

Teams will say they hate preparing for Vick because of his improvisational skills. But talking to coaches over the years, that is offset by the fact that he doesn't throw it as well.

I guess the Eagles decided in a half that Kolb isn't their answer.

Somewhere Donovan McNabb has to be chuckling.

The Eagles have really botched their quarterback situation.

Get ready, Philly. The Single Wing is your new offense.

Mike Vick? Really?

People are so hung up on Vick of ATL but TODAY he has better touch on the ball
we dont know that, remember he played a Detroit Lion defense and a Packer defense that wasnt prepared to face Michael Vick. We can say Vick's passing is better at the end of the year, but as of now, he's unproven as a passer.

Solid point homie. They(media) flip a story either way. If Vick doesnt start,Pete says how good he looks good from the pocket/extending plays and should be a starter

First, the Eagles shouldn't have dumped McNabb...but they did. At this time they have to go with the hot hand while the momentum is in their favor. Eventually, Vick will come back down to earth and Kolb will have his job back. For now, Vick will do a good job as he is obviously fired up and for good reason...he was given another chance by the NFL to resurrect his career...and he can't blow this chance. He'll help the Eagles win but I really think by week 6 Kolb will be back as the starter. Just a feeling.

PeePee, you obviously didn't see the Eagles game last week.  It was their D that was suspect, not Michael Vick.  Yeah, there were a couple long passes that could have been picked off, but Vick also connected on long, medium and short passes throughout the game to virtually every part of the field.  The 2 drives to end the first half were classic Vick.  And if Rubber-Band-Hands Copper hadn't flubbed the on-side kick attempt, Vick would have come in and ended the Lions' chances.

And who are you to assume that Vick will be the starter because Coach Andy Reid has flip-flopped?  Nowhere does it say that Kolb has been cleared to play but Reid is giving the start to Vick anyway.  The switch might be more about Vick having the entire week to prepare, and for the team to practice with him on plays that suit his abilities. (Because, geez PeePee, they are not at all similar QBs!)

I'm not an Andy Reid fan, and I think Marty Morningafter is among the wost OCs in the NFL, but this seems like the best move for the team this week.  Bottom line, it looks like you rushed this story.

Not only is Andy Reid a bad coach who can't win the big game, he is fielding a dog murderer as a starting QB.  I guess you can't expect anything in terms of morals when both of his sons were in jail for drugs.

Keep it Classy Eagles, at least we have the Phillies.

How can anyone make a decision about Kolb's quality of play after less than a half?  I'm not saying Vick isn't better right now, because you can't judge Kolb based on his first half as leader of the Eagles.  It is also laughable that people are saying that Vick is playing great.  He played against a Green Bay defense willing to trade points for time off the clock (prevent defense) and a LOUSY Lions team.

I agree with Vick starting here and now. He is the best option to win today.  People are so hung up on Vick of ATL but TODAY he has better touch on the ball. He showed that against GB decent secondary in a half and Detroit sorry secondary.  Philly QBs will have to run basically all game and throw outside the pocket because Philly weak offensive line will get Kolb killed. With all that said, between Philly o-line and defense. They still will lose a number of games.

This is not a passing league. This is a league where balance allows you to do more things. The run sets up the pass and vice-versa. Vick is multi-dimensional and Kolb is not. Plus Vick has clearly looked comfortable in that offense. Andy Reid is doing the right thing by changing his mind if the Eagles want to succeed now.

Prisco, ask yourself one question honestly ? Does Clay Mathews run down Michael Vick on the play Kevin Kolb was caught from behind and sustained the concussion ? I watch that play and know Clay Mathews needs the sidelines and the secondary to converge on Vick on that same play to even be involved on the tackle. The season opener vs the Packers was a playoff game for Kolb, Kolb came out flat and that's the difference between the two QB's, one is ready for the big games, the other needs to tune up and face weaker teams.  I'd have a different opinion had Kolb started and beat the Lions. What stands out most about Vick, both games were comeback efforts with this Eagles team. Kolb doesn't have a comeback in him and he has never displayed that in his entire brief career. To date, he's only beaten the 2009 Chiefs and that was a very sad squad KC put on the field last season. The Lions might've won this most recent game had Stafford been healthy ? They certainly beat the Bears, but had a td taken away on a bad call. Does Kolb bring the Eagles back from being down 17-7 vs the Lions. Vick put 28 unanswered points on the scoreboard from that point on. I don't think Kolb has that in him ?
