Mike Vick? Really?

Posted on: September 21, 2010 6:07 pm

Mike Vick is the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Why?

Is Andy Reid really giving up on Kevin Kolb that quickly? Vick has played well in his two appearances, but you don't trade away Donovan McNabb with the idea of making Kolb your long-term solution and then give up on it after one half of football.

You know what you have in Vick: A wonderfully athletic player that can do amazing things with his feet but is limited with his ability to be a quality passer.

Vick has never been a good passer. This is a passing league -- more even than when he was the starter in Atlanta.

Kolb suffered a concussion in the opening loss to the Green Bay Packers. Vick came in and played well and then played well in a start last week at Detroit. But the Lions aren't good on defense. Then again, neither are the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Eagles opponent this week.

Teams will say they hate preparing for Vick because of his improvisational skills. But talking to coaches over the years, that is offset by the fact that he doesn't throw it as well.

I guess the Eagles decided in a half that Kolb isn't their answer.

Somewhere Donovan McNabb has to be chuckling.

The Eagles have really botched their quarterback situation.

Get ready, Philly. The Single Wing is your new offense.

Prisco are you daft. McNabb might be chuckling because Kolb looked like a deer in the headlights, but the Eagles are a better team with Vick at the Helm. It is more important to field the team with the best chance of winning than it is to save face over a bad trade.

Mike Vick? Really?

Under normal circumstances I might agree in part, but this is not a normal situation.  Number one, Vick is not a Charlie Batch or a Byron Leftwich just hanging around trying to get reps.  You are talking about one of the most explosive weapons the NFL has ever seen.  He has obviously matured and is letting the game come to him.  Number two,  Quarterbacks either have confidence or they don't.  Vick knows that he is going to make it happen on every single play.  You mentioned some of these other guys.   Leinart does not have a confidence problem at all.  He has an ego problem, and that is what Ken could not stand about him in Arizona.  Well,  I can promise you by week 8 that he will be wishing he had Leinart instead of the interception king of cleveland that has migrated to Cardinalville.  Look,  I'm not saying things can't happen that strike a blow to your confidence, but you are an NFL quarterback which means that you don't get rattled-you don't hesitate-you don't get down.  You are the leader.  Your team has to know when they lineup with you behind center that you are going to lead them to victory.  Do I think Kolb is a confident guy?  Yes.  Do I think he needs to start over Vick?  Absolutely not.  Here are the reasons.   First,  the offensive line is terrible.  Kolb was running for his life the entire first half.  So was Vick.  The difference is that Vick can run for his life and find the end zone either by passing on the run or scampering down the field passing defensive backs like they are standing still.  Vick has the confidence of his teammates.  Everyone on that team believes that they can win with Vick.  This in no way is Kolb's fault,  but if he is put back out there on that field with that line it is going to be catastrophic.  To me the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of Reid and the G.M. for putting Kolb in this situation in the first place.  The depth on the line is horrible.  There are only a handful of guys in this league who could have success behind that line.  Vick,  Rodgers, Freeman, maybe Big Ben.  Only because of mobility.  Im telling you Kolb would have an even bigger concussion,  and Vick is not going to be exempt from the hits either.  Ok,  I am done rambling now.  sorry

Prisco - I agree with you.  I think this ends badly.  I do think that Vick gives us the best chance to win now.  With that said, i think we're a 9-7 club at best, maybe that will be good enough to win the NFC east, but I seriously doubt we're a threat to make any kind of run in the playoffs.  I'm not sure Kolb is the "guy" but how can you make that determination after such limited action?  Lets, for arguments sake, say that the Eagles make the playoffs this year and lose in the 1st or 2nd round with Vick as the QB.  What happens next year?  We traded McNabb to give the reins to Kolb.  Give the kid a chance to prove himself.  With Kolb we could be looking at one step back to take two forward.  This move makes Reid look like a fraud, spin it however you want with the "he's protecting Kolb" blah blah blah.  be a man of your word!

Lets face it Prisco is a moron.  Always has been and always will be.  He talks out of his butt on most occasions, and most of his picks are awful.  So his opinion really does not matter

I guess throwing for under 300 yds and two td's is now considered 'being on fire' and 'playing out of your mind'.  The Eagles are joke, this decision falls right in line with the way the organization has always carried itself.  Reid claims that Vick is back to his old pre-felony inprisonment self, did I miss something?  Vick was an exciting player, but he never was a great quarterback.  He played in one NFC Championship game and got smoked.  We've seen Vick at his best, and he wasn't a winner.
I don't like McNabb at all, but now I can't wait until he smokes his former team in two weeks. Of course the Jags might beat him to that.  The Eagles fancy themselves a top tier franchise like the Steelers, Giants, Packers or Cowboys...this move just shows they're more in line with the Raiders or Bengals of the league.

Mike Vick? Really?

How many NFC Championships have you coached a team to again? Oh that's right - none. How many SB's have you coached a team to? Oh yeah - none as well. I think Andy Reid is a bit more clued up than you think Petey. Maybe you should just get back to what you do best - tuckin' into the local buffets.
