49ers a challenge for Harbaugh

Now we’ll find out if Jim Harbaugh can coach. We get to see what he can do without a quarterback.

Harbaugh agreed to become coach of the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, a team with major quarterback issues.

At the University of San Diego, Harbaugh had Josh Johnson, now a backup with Tampa Bay and clearly an elite player on the non-scholarship level.

At Stanford, Harbaugh did little until Andrew Luck became his quarterback. In San Francisco, he has nothing close to that.

That’s why I’m sure he had trouble deciding to take the job, even though he’s going to be paid $5 million a year.

Not having a quarterback is career suicide.

The 49ers will almost certainly draft a passer in the first or second round. But whoever that is will be a step down from Luck.

We’re about to find out if Jim Harbuagh is as good as advertised.

49ers end 2011 season at 1-15. With the first pick of 2012 draft, the 49ers select Stanford QB Andrew Luck.

Doesn't Cincy want out of Carson Palmer?

49ers a challenge for Harbaugh

How soon people forget!  in Harbaugh's first year (2007) his backup QB (Tavita Prichard) lead the Cardinal to the greatest upset in college FB when the 41-point dog Cardinal beat USC 24-23.  He will be a very successful NFL coach.  As a Stanford alumnus, I am sick about his leaving.

49ers a challenge for Harbaugh

I think the 49ers get a QB in who will be a good backup for Andrew Luck when he's around in 2012. Question is, will Harbaugh hold back enough on the reins to put his team in a position to acquire Luck next year? He has a 5 year contract with no real pressure to produce his first year, so he just needs to find a servicable QB for 2011 and go from there.

Will be interesting.

49ers a challenge for Harbaugh

All Harbaugh has to do is tank it for one season (not far to go from 5-11), and team back up with Luck after he comes out. Does anyone think this might even be part of the plan? Stanford and Candlestick are literally 30 minutes apart. His draft this year can focus on talent positions outside QB, and then next year, the missing piece of the puzzle comes aboard. Wishful thinking to be sure, but I wouldn't call it far-fetched by any means.

49ers a challenge for Harbaugh

He has a five year contract draft who he feels is the best QB out there, be it Gabbert or Newton and go with him just like the rams did, if you want to win right now, sign Young and still draft one of those and let them set a year either way it is a win win sistuation. Harbaugh is not dumb, he will bring in the right coaches and players and get the job done.
