Pre-game babble is meaningless

During a recent conversation with an NFL head coach we discussed pre-game build up and if anything that is said and done leading up to a game can have an impact.

"We might try to say it does, but it doesn't," he said.

How right he is.

A handful of players I spoke to agreed. Once the pads are on, once the first hits are made, no pre-game noise matters.

A big reason is the on-field noise is even worse.

I've had several players say the insults on game day are X-rated compared to the pre-game buildup. They wouldn't have a chance on live television or radio. The FCC would go nuts.

"I've had guys say I was a gay and all that," one player said. "Only he didn't say it in that way, if you know what I mean. It's nasty out there."

So while a lot is being made of the ugly words thrown at Tom Brady by Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, just remember they don't matter. If you think something like that will make the Patriots play harder, then you don't know football players.

They play harder in the postseason. If they're not motivated by the fear of losing, then something's wrong anyway.

Brady is guilty of being a game-day punk at times. But that's fine. He can back it up. He's earned that right. When he pointed to the Jets bench after throwing a touchdown in the 45-3 blowout earlier this season, I knew that would become an issue if they met again.

I'll be honest: I like it.

Back in the day, I remember a kid taunting me during a high-school game. One problem:

My team was winning.

I pointed to the scoreboard.

That's all that matters.

Talking smack is an art form.  Backing it up is another matter.

Brady can back it up. That's why he's great. I will say this. He does get a free pass for his on-field antics. He's Tom Brady. Of course he does.

Maybe that's why Cromartie popped off the way he did. But if they Jets think they're getting into that guy's head, they can forget it. He's a pro's pro who won't let any pre-game noise bother his focus.

Jets coach Rex Ryan doesn't care if his team talks. That's a good thing for us in the media. Ryan is smart enough to know that none if it matters. If the Patriots blow out the Jets Sunday, Cromartie's words won't be the reason, but his play might.

I've seen too many paranoid coaches get too caught up in what players might say. You know, providing the proverbial bulletin-board material.

Walk into an NFL locker room and you're bound to see articles cut out and posted on the walls with yellow highlights of things opponents said about a certain player or the entire team. It's sophomoric to think those things matter. But coaches aren't always the brightest.

You know what matters? Getting hit in the mouth on the first play with a chance to move on in the postseason.

So make a big deal about Cromartie's words all you want. As soon as the foot hits leather for kickoff, they'll be as meaningful as an NCAA bowl game in December.

Pre-game babble is meaningless

THE PURE LACK OF TALENT ON THE PATS TEAM SHOWED TODAY.

WHO'S THE GREAT WR?
WHO'S THE BIG PASS RUSHER?
WHO'S THE SHUT DOWN CORNER?
WHO'S THE GREAT RUNNING BACK?
WHO'S THE DOMINANT FORCE ON DEFENSE?

THIS TEAM HAS BRADY AND NOTHING MORE.

Pre-game babble is meaningless

@portvuelaps: Are you actually looking for accountability from Prisco?  Do you not realize he's infallible?  You may think you know he was dead wrong (as he is about 60% of the time, estimating conservatively).  But you're wrong.  Because he's Pete Prisco.

Pre-game babble is meaningless

Nobody was quaking in their boots to face the Pats last year.  They just were not that good, even their own fans didn't have very high hopes.  This year is different.  They seem to be the best team in football and the Jets will get squashed on Sunday.  While I wasn't afraid of Indy I did think they posed the biggest threat of upsetting the Pats.  That's because the best way to beat the Pats is with a great QB on the other team and Manning has that ability sometimes in the playoffs (although he also pulls plenty of Favre games).  Thats why the Jets have very little chance of beating the Pats, their QB stinks.  And Baltimore is also very unlikely to beat the Pats, because Flacco is only slightly better.  Which brings us to Pittsburgh, who has the best chance of beating the Pats, because Roethlisberger is a top-notch NFL QB, but the Pats have always had Pittsburgh's number because they blitz and Brady just eats up blitzing teams.

Yep,

Baltimore was QUAKING in their boots when they played the Pats last year.  How did that turn out for Tom Brady???  You know who Brady DIDN'T want to face in the play-offs this year????  That's right, Peyton Manning.  You are either a Pats lover who has a Steeler avatar in his profile or a clueless Steeler fan.  Hopefully you are the former, because Pitt fans aren't that dumb.

Pre-game babble is meaningless

Did I miss the " I was wrong about the Colts" article or was he too busy find someone else*s balls to lap on.  All his predictions, all his sleepers, all his best-this and best-chance-that all include the Colts.  I remember one article where it was about picking a sleeper in the playoffs..and he picked the Colts..they were like in first place..lol...He is forever quoting unamed GMs, like they even know who he is.  Fact of the matter is the remaing teams in the AFC playoffs would rather face Peyton Manning in a game rather than Tom Brady..and this is coming from a Steelers fan..Go Steelers!

Pre-game babble is meaningless

Was there something said in this article I'm missing where Prisco is on Brady's nutz?

Did you actually read the article.....you know, the references to "deserve" or anything along those lines?  If so, did you take the next step of interpreting how the author felt about his subject when he wrote these things?  Ah, there's your problem!  Don't feel bad, uneducated people often have trouble sorting out the perspectives or emotions underlying conceptualism.  Don't know what that means?  Remember, you're uneducated.  Again, don't feel bad.

I swear I saw Prisco swinging from Tom Brady's "boys" while reading this article.  I seriously think he has a man-crush on Brady.  It's gotta be the hair and Prisco must think Brady's a woman!

I hear those JV games can get pretty intense. Just curious, were you sitting on the bench?

You kidding?  Prisco was in the band.  Flute section leader
