Fox needs to change

Posted on: January 13, 2011 4:35 pm

The Denver Broncos’ decision to hire John Fox is a safe pick, but I think it comes with a word of warning to Broncos fans:

You better hope he changes the way he plays offense.

Fox is a run-first coach. That’s his mentality. That has to change.

When Fox first took over as the coach in Carolina, you could win that way. Not anymore.

He has Tim Tebow in Denver and he has to develop him into a quality passer. The fear is Fox will become enamored with Tebow’s ability to run the football.

Do I smell option?

Fox has never had an offensive coordinator who wowed you. Remember, some of his best success came with Dan Henning.

His style of offense went out of in 1979. Just ask the Miami Dolphins. They saw it firsthand the past couple of seasons.

Fox needs to get with the times.

Run, run, pass doesn't work anymore.

Both teams also have elite offensive lines and top notch defenses. And look how long it took the Ravens to even get a 100 yards against a great run stoppping team.

A team like the Broncos would be absolutely horrible with that formula. As would just about every other team in the NFL. Look how the 49ers wasted a bountiful amount of talent this year with that philosophy.

The Jets of this year and the 2000 Ravens are about the only great teams you can legitimately cite as using run run pass as a winning formula. Both teams are prodigies. Both teams also had quarterbacks that because of the strong Defenses, and because of their limitations, were asked to manage the time of possession and not throw the game away.

I often don't agree with Prisco but he is right.

Shcildrotte, I was also surprised that Peppers flew the coop, but word was that he wanted to play in a 3-4 defense and Fox has always been a 4-3 defensive coach.  Strange that he ended up in Chicago in another 4-3, but they put up the money, so be it.  He was never much of a vocal leader on the team and I think that was somewhat expected of him because of his dominance.  Not only was he a UNC guy but he was also raised in eastern NC so I guess he just wanted a change of scenery and a chance to start over somewhere else.  No problem....he and Jake Delhomme's ridiculous salaries are what killed the Panthers salary cap to begin with.  If you don't want to be there it surely doesn't help the morale of the rest of the team.  Jerry Richardson purged the entire team this past year because of his fear of the NFL labor issues and the possibility of an impending lockout.  At the same time, he has alienated a lot of fans because he felt the need to rid the roster of high priced veterans and sacrificed a season by putting a young second rate team on the field.  No fault of John Fox.  I predicted 4 wins before the season started and they didnt even reach that mark.  I can only hope that Ron Rivera will bring in an offensive coordinator who has a little creativity. They have some good young talent to work with and those guys got some valuable experience last year because of injuries to starters, but last year was miserable for us Panther fans to say the least.  I don't think Jimmy Clausen is the answer either at QB, so I'm hoping they will bring in someone to compete.  Kevin Kolb would be nice, but Philly wants alot for him.  Guess we'll see what happens in April when the draft rolls around.  Something tells me that Fairly will be their man.

thanks, phootballphan; from the outside (overseas) it looks bad.  I knew Smith was a bit of a prima donna, but Jenkins and Peppers--especially Peppers, being a UNC alum--were a bit, um shocking?  I was wondering if it was Fox--despite his rep--or the ownership, or what.  When you see things from a long ways away, they look different.  And it looked like players were leaving the ship before it sank.

You can be a run run pass team as long as you actually have a QB thats capable of passing the ball when the time comes and maybe more than 1 good receiver.

Fox needs to change

"W ere I Denver, I'd be much more worried about the change in atmosphere that occurred in Carolina under Fox.  He went from having great defensive teams that won championships (divisional, at least) to teams that didn't play hard with players who obviously didn't want to be there.  Now, I don't know what happened, but when a team cannot keep a Julius Peppers or a Steve Smith happy, it's going to run into trouble.  It seemed to be at the point where no one wanted to play in Carolina.  That's what I'd be worried about ."

Schidlkrotte..what change in atmosphere??  His defensive teams were very respectable with a lot of young talent....not much of a pass rush this year, but Charles Johnson(who replaced Peppers) had 11.5 sacks this year(Peppers had 8).  They were on the field about 70% of the game because of the terrible offense.  if you really knew much about the history of the Panthers you would know that John Fox has always been considered a "players coach".  He was very well respected by his players, especially his defensive players and they played hard for him.  As far as Julius Peppers goes, he held the Panthers for ransom for 2 years...they franchised him and  paid him $18 million dollars but it wasn't enough...they were strapped under the salary cap and could not afford to keep him on the team...and Steve Smith??...how do you keep a guy happy who has beat the hell out of 2 teammates in the past few years and was suspended by the team because of his actions...NOBODY can keep Steve Smith happy.  Players like playing in Carolina.  The only ones that have been unhappy that I can remember are Kris Jenkins and Julius Peppers.  They may be others but I cant recollect any.

Fox did a great job with what he had to work with.  He was run oriented because his best players were his RB's and offensive lineman.  He had 2 rookie WR's this past season and a rookie QB throwing to them....Smith was hurt part of the season and did not play at 100%....the problem Fox had is allowing Jeff Davidson to control the offensive play calling....run, run, pass(incomplete), punt....repeat next series...etc. etc etc....Marty Hurney, the GM,  is also at fault for his terrible draft's over the past few years...trading up for Armanti Edwards and losing a 2nd rounder this year was awful!!!!

Fox will do a great job as a head coach at Denver IF he selects a good offensive coordinator!....good hire by the Broncos.

Fox needs to change

I know, right? Run, run, pass, who does that crap? Teams like, uhhhhh, the Jets! And uhhhhhh, the Ravens! Have they had much success lately? The Jets made it to the AFC Championship with run, run, pass. The Jets best chance to win this weekend against the 14-2 Patriots is run, run, pass. The Ravens won a super bowl with Trent Dilfer and run, run, pass. The Ravens DESTROYED New England last season in the playoffs with run, run, pass. The Steelers won a super bowl with run, run, pass just a couple years ago. The Rams LOST a super bowl because of pass, pass, pass...

It's not about what you do with the offense, it's about whether or not the offense you run works with the talent you have. In John Fox's case, the talent you don't (or didn't...) have.

Another POS article by Pete Prisco. You know, I used to say "Prisco's not that bad" but you know what? The more I read your garbage the more I realize I was wrong. Fox doesn't have to change, Fox needs to get talent on his roster. Prisco needs to change, or CBS needs to go Carolina and just change out Prisco... Geezus you write such trash.

Fox needs to change

First off I guess if you were the coach of the Panthers you would have had Jake Delhomme, Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen throwing it around the yard instead of running with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathon Stewart?

It is about personell not philosophy. John Fox is  a defensive coach that is where his philosophy is applied. Look at Tony Dungy for instance. He built the Bucs as a run first team and always had bad qb's and average at best recievers. What he did have was Dunn and ALstott to churn out first downs. Was that his "philosophy"? I believe once he got Peyton his teams threw it all over the place and he did very well. Did he change philosophies or get a quarterback?

Time will tell as it always does . Oh btw last season was the first season in a while that the Panthers threw more than they ran, how did that work out?
