Brady gets a pass

Posted on: January 17, 2011 1:00 pm

---If Peyton Manning did what Tom Brady has done in his last three postseason games, the wolves would be circling the carcass. As it is, Brady gets a free pass. Brady is 0-3 in his last three postseason games. Included is a loss as the supposed greatest team of all time in 2007, losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl. He's also lost two consecutive home playoff games, one as the top seed in the conference, that coming Sunday in losing to the New York Jets. It's not like Brady has lit it up in those games either.  He didn’t play awful, but he certainly wasn't Brady-like. In those three games, Brady threw five touchdown passes and four interceptions. His highest passer rating was 89.0 Sunday. Here's another amazing nugget: Since Brady won the Super Bowl after the 2004 season he has played in 10 postseason games. His passer rating has been over 90 just three times, twice against the Jacksonville Jaguars. In those 10 games, he has thrown 19 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.  This is by no means meant to demean Brady. He is still one of the all-time greats. But let’s face it: He hasn't exactly been a great postseason quarterback since winning his last Super Bowl. Since Brady last won a Super Bowl, Manning has won one and been to another.  He's played in 11 postseason games and has thrown 15 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions. He's had four games with passer ratings over 90. Neither has been as good in the postseason as they've been in the regular season. The difference is Manning has to hear about it. Brady does not. That's what you call living on your laurels.

---There is no doubt the Patriots need deep speed. They can talk all they want about how they didn’t miss Randy Moss. Maybe they didn’t miss the Moss they had this season, but they missed a player like Moss, a speed guy who can push the coverage. It's amazing Brady did what he did in the regular season without that speed. That’s a testament to him and the ability of Bill Belichick to coach up the offense. The Patriots have two first-round picks. They must get a player who can stretch the field with one of those.

---The Falcons had no answer on defense for the Packers Saturday night. I'm not sure anybody would have. They were that hot. Atlanta has some talented, young players on defense. But they need to get more help with their outside rush. John Abraham is a good player, but he's coming to the end. Kroy Biermann, who was expected to have a breakout season, was a disappointment at the other end. The Falcons also need to turn the offense over to Matt Ryan. They have to play more up-tempo. To help that, Atlanta would be wise to get a young tight end. Tony Gonzalez is considering retirement and he doesn't have the same speed he once did. He had one catch against the Packers.

---One player who will have to step up his game for the Falcons next season is corner Dunta Robinson. He signed a big contract as a free agent last spring and was a disappointment. Brent Grimes, the other corner, outplayed him. Robinson needs to become a most consistent player. The Falcons need him in a division with good quarterbacks.

---Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is one of the best play-callers in the NFL. He takes a lot of heat for his inability to stick with the running game. Guess what? This is a passing league. In the Packers' scheme, the short-passing game is the running game. I've known McCarthy for a while and I've always considered him an innovative offensive coach. This is his time to get his due.

---Why didn’t the Patriots show any urgency when they were down 10 and got the ball back in the fourth quarter? Sure didn't look like coaching genius to me.

---Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice has done a wonderful job with his revamped line. They don't have a ton of talent, yet they are one game away from the Super Bowl. Big props to Tice.

---I can't wait to see Mike Martz match wits with Dom Capers, two coordinators I really respect.

Brady gets a pass

Why do most Pats fans get upset when people talk about Manning with the reverence of God?

Because most Pats fans realize that football is a team game.  Yes, some players maybe slightly better than others but as Belichick would say, the other guys get paid to.  Look what McDanials did with Orton, he had the best season of is career (it was the defence that stunk).  We Pats fans compare Payton to Tom because we know Tom, like the Steelers know Big Ben.  We do it not to build Tom up (because as a fan I could care less about his stats, only if the team wins) but to tear Payton down.  Colt fans think Jesus is playing QB for them.  Sorry to burst your bubble, the Son of God doesn't play football.

Brady gets a pass

He is right on.  Brady minus Vinateri equals pretty average.

Funny, Manning didn't win anything until after they got Vinateri.
Manning minus Vinateri equals pretty average.

Brady gets a pass

What a load of trash paz, you need to go back on your medication. When Mannings career is over i would think he will be the leading stats in every major category, most completions, most yards, and most TDS and another Super Bowl or two.
Since 2007 NE has become Indy East.  Great in the reg season, not so much in the playoffs.  As for individual stats, they mean nothing.  Manning wasn't throwing to himself.  Furthermore, Mamming will have the yards & total TD record but lets not forget Brady has the single season TD record, has 2 of the top 5 all time single season passing rating, has a higher career passing rating then Mannning (just slightly).  So "every major category" is an overstatement.  As for "another Super Bowl or two", other than wishful thinking what evidence do you have to predict that.  He has been in the league for 13yrs now and his team has won 1 Superbowl (he did not have a very good postseason that year, the defense went on a role).  1/13= 7.7%.  He is 35 yrs old, at most he has what, 5 more years (3 really good years).  The odds are greater that he doesn't win another Superbowl then him wining one never mind two.  Furthermore, neither the Pats or the Colts are not wining anything without a better Defense.

If you think based upon the current roster of the Colts that they have more than a punchers chance of wining the Super Bowl you are living on fantasy island.

Brady gets a pass

Well if anything Prisco gets a response. Since the article was based mostly on Brady's last 3 losses and not on his previous record of 14-2 prior to this I understand Pete's frustraton that Brady does not get thrown under the bus like Peyton does. However like it has already been said in this post Manning is a field general that runs his offense with little help from his OC. Manning reads the field and makes his plays. Brady is an order taker. He has three or four plays that are sequenced and audibles them based on the coverage. Anyone watching the game on Sunday saw BB getting frustrated with the run plays when Brady was trying to "hurry up" the offense. Brady cannot take control when he is being pressured. He needs to be told what to do. Manning takes control which is why he gets more flack. The other reason why Manning takes more is he is more direct with the media. Brady lets his coach talk for him and comes out like a robot. Manning is emotional and has no problem telling off his receivers on the field for messing up. Brady does not. If I were a coach I would want either one of these guys on my team because they are great. I like Brady over Manning because he is more of a team oriented player but that does not diminish Manning in any sort of way that is just what I want. The other thing people have to realize is  that coaches are better preparing themselves for Manning and Brady in the playoffs. They use their Defenses to win the games like Rex did this year because they know if either one cannot pass they will wait until they get his or throw it away. With QB's like Rodgers, Ben and Cutler no coach can play this way because they are more than willing to run the ball to get positive yardage which is harder to cover all the receivers.

Brady gets a pass

IF, Big Ben wins, yes he will have 3 wins without any onfield controversy.  he also has at least 2 rape victims on his rap sheet.  So its the good with the bad I guess.

For anyone who thinks the "cheating" mattered in the Pats winning is foolish.  The pats cheated because they were bored not because they needed too

Brady gets a pass

The funniest thing about this topic is that it's all a reflection of how the entire team played.
There has never been a QB that won a game in the history of football.

We are living in the era of the ignorant sportswriter.

And the fan knowledge is suffering because of it too...
See nybites posts for further clarification on lack of fan knowledge.

Brady gets a pass

Hold your  horses. As an aside I am a Big Ben fan, I would pick him or Brady over any other qb's in the league, but Brady has 19 playoff appearances Ben has 11, Brady has 14 wins, Ben has 9. Brady has won more playoff games. I was'nt going for percentages but wins, no need for a math lesson. But I hear you.

Brady gets a pass

Bottomline, in this era Brady is still the top ranked winninng qb in the playoffs, Big Ben is second,

Quick Remedial math lesson for you.

14-5 is a winning percentage of . 737
  9-2 is a winning percentage of . 818

Brady has been in the league 4 years longer which is a factor in determaining total playoff games.

Better yet, who is still playing and who has won 2 since Brady won anything?

Brady gets a pass

Prisco you are a complete hack, like Manning! The reason Brady gets a pass is because Brady is 14-5 in the playoffs! All of the losses you mention still don't compare to how much he has won! Your boy Pick 6 Peyton is 9-10 in the playoffs, in other words he is a loser!! He has choked away so many opportunities when it matters that I am beginning to wonder if the lone SB victory he has is a fluke! I am not wondering, it was a fluke! There is a reason he was known as a choke artist.

I am sure while you go home and sleep with your Peyton teddy bear, that you cry yourself to sleep at the record setting season Brady had this year. You are just as pathetic as Peyton. Didn't you pick the colts to win the SB this year, don't you pick them every year? What does that say about you? I will tell you what is says, it says that as a professional writer you should have no biases but you do, so at your job you are a rank amatuer! You can't accept the fact that in the playoffs (when it matters) ole Pick 6 can't compete with Brady or Big Ben, so what do you do? you wait until Brady loses to put your skirt on and do you dance routine. Where I come from that makes you a female dog, or a slithering snake at best!

Bottomline, in this era Brady is still the top ranked winninng qb in the playoffs, Big Ben is second, your boy Pick 6 Peyton does not even rank 9-10, pathetic!. Going forward, you should let someone else do the  power rankings, because you aren't even professional enough to do that, why because you will always slant everything you do around your man love for pick 6, you should invite peyton to broke back mountain, but that probably is your desire not his. You and Peyton are just alike two losers, trying to get a win. Amatuers!

Brady gets a pass

I know Brady is one of the main reasons they win but not the only reason as they have had the "Mariano Rivera" of football in Adam Vinatieri.
actually, if you look at it, Brady and New England have not won since Vinatieri left - and Manning and the Colts did not win until Vinatieri jined them. New England has not won without Vinatieri, but Vinatieri has won without then. So maybe the kicker is the true greatest ever, champion, etc...Laughing
