Jets go crazy for Holmes

Are the New York Jets crazy?

They give Santonio Holmes, a receiver who has had more than 55 catches just once in his career, is one failed drug test away from a possible year-long suspension by the league, a contract that will pay him $50 million with $24 million in guaranteed money.

That $24 million, if true, is the most ever for a receiver. What?

This guy hasn't finished in the top-10 in catches in a season yet in his career. The Steelers were so turned off by him that they traded him for a fifth-round pick last summer.  The Steelers tired of his off-field issues, one of which led to a four-game suspension to start the 2010 season with the Jets.

Holmes is a nice player. And he has speed. Plus, Mark Sanchez loves him. But isn't that a lot of money for a risky player, who you wouldn't even consider a top-10 receiver in the NFL?

I can't imagine there was a great market for him -- which is why I always felt he would go back to the Jets --because of all the baggage. So somebody please explain the money to me.

Last time I checked, this wasn't Al Toon or Don Maynard we are talking about.

In fairness Smurph, Haynesworth signed with the Patriots. But I agree with you. If Mark Gastineau and Joe Klecko came out of retirement and signed with the Jets, Teddy, Jetsfan10 and others would be on here proclaiming the Jets Super Bowl champions.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

The Jets signed SanAntonio Holmes and "Fat Albert" Haynesworth.  They will now win the next 6 Super Bowls, right farmer toad?  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  Gotta love Jest fans.  I guess I can't blame them for getting excited.  They made the playoffs two straight seasons for the first time in what, 45-50 years?

The one thing I find with wide receivers is that it depends on the quarterback.  Just as Randy Moss wasn't a factor when he went to the Vikings and Titans.  Holmes is great with Sanchez, the 55 catches from last year were after he missed 4 games so those numbers will increase.  Wide receivers always seem to get more money than they deserve but the one wide receiver with chemistry working for him is Holmes.  On the other side of things the receiver that I think will struggle the most is Sidney Rice, mainly because of Tavaris Jackson.  They didn't seem to mesh in Minnesota so it might be a tough year.

Jets go crazy for Holmes do you feel about the Pats getting Haynesworth?  I know you hate the Jets and love the Pats, so I want to hear your opinion about New England trading for the most overrated Nose Tackle in the game.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

That's way too much for Holmes.  And, in comparison, Sidney Rice got 41 million, but he's a better receiver.  Jets will suck this year.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

How can you say he's not in the top 10? Saying he's not is a stretch.  You just wish the Pats had anyone of his caliber.

Uh, NYMD, Wes Welker has caught a total of 432 balls and scored 22 TDs in 4 seasons. He had 3 consecutive seasons with 100+ receptions. Last year, he caught 88.

We don't have to wish for a WR of Holmes' caliber. We have a better one already.

It happens every year now. Rex Ryan begins his Super Bowl guarantees. The Jets sign at least one free agent, with talk of another one possibly coming, and the Jets fans get so excited they soil their pants. Then, when the season ends, and the Jets have fallen short, their fans disappear into a January New York fog, and most of the loud ones are suddenly silent and nowhere to be found on these message boards.

Holmes made some big catches last year. And forget the CBA old agreement vs. new agreement talk. Take out one season, and this off the field distraction catches 50-something passes. Don't bring up the Steelers being a run first team either. So are the Jets. 50 million with 24 million guaranteed ? He's overpaid. By the three-quarter mark of the season, many of the now-giddy Jets fans will realize this. That is, unless he gets suspended again, in which case they will realize it sooner.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

The Bottom line is that the Jets are a much better team with Holmes Point Blank!!
We are going to miss Braylon Edwards but if we can sign Brad Smith it wont be that big of a deal.
I really think Rex is going to bring Randy Moss in. I think it will work as well.
Everyone is going to hate on the Jets now but who cares their teams have not been in the Playoffs for a decade LOL!
Now Lets get NNamdi Asomugha and take over the League!!! There wont be a team in the League that will have over 200 YDS Passing on that MONSTER D!!! Go get em!! And Bring bak LT for 1 more year let him go out with a Bang. J E T S JETS JETS JETS!!!!!!

BTW according to my research Andre Johnson "only" makes $10.5 mil a year. And after signing a 2 year extension on top of his 6 year contract, just $13 mil of the 2 year/$38.5 contract extension was guaranteed. His $60 mil 6 year extension which he signed in '07 included $15 mil guaranteed and his original rookie contract of 6 years at $39 mil had just $13.5 mil guaranteed. Total guaranteed money = $41.5 mil, however since they were all extensions signed prior to the previous contracts expiration in a round about way Prisco is actually correct in his declaration of Holmes being "guaranteed" the most money ever to a WR in the NFL at the time of the original contract signing. Not that anyone who cares will ever read this thread or post but just some food for thought LOL

Jets go crazy for Holmes

Didn't know all the details before my previous post, and now I am leaning even more towards the Reward out weighing the Risk on this for the Jets. Savvy move by a Savvy franchise, Holmes and Sanchez should flourish and compete for the ring on a yearly basis.

With that said, GO CHIEFS!!!
