Jets go crazy for Holmes

Are the New York Jets crazy?

They give Santonio Holmes, a receiver who has had more than 55 catches just once in his career, is one failed drug test away from a possible year-long suspension by the league, a contract that will pay him $50 million with $24 million in guaranteed money.

That $24 million, if true, is the most ever for a receiver. What?

This guy hasn't finished in the top-10 in catches in a season yet in his career. The Steelers were so turned off by him that they traded him for a fifth-round pick last summer.  The Steelers tired of his off-field issues, one of which led to a four-game suspension to start the 2010 season with the Jets.

Holmes is a nice player. And he has speed. Plus, Mark Sanchez loves him. But isn't that a lot of money for a risky player, who you wouldn't even consider a top-10 receiver in the NFL?

I can't imagine there was a great market for him -- which is why I always felt he would go back to the Jets --because of all the baggage. So somebody please explain the money to me.

Last time I checked, this wasn't Al Toon or Don Maynard we are talking about.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

Holmes is a go to guy, who has averaged 16 yards per catch for his career.  I never understand why writers and fans care so much about what players make or are signed for.  Does anyone really think the people writing up the deal werent aware of where it puts the player in relation to others players?

A dependable WR who runs good routes and catches timely balls is not as prevelant as you think.  So he isnt the loud mouth jerk like TO, Ocho or Moss, he still gets the job done.

I imagine if the readers judged Prisco by what he made we would all throw up.  Prisco isnt about being right, he just writes the counter argument to boost his readership.

Serphnx...Braylon Edwards is more explosive than Holmes?  Were did you see that on display?  And Mike Wallace is already better than Santonio?  Get real.  Wallace is as one dimensional as they come.  Holmes had 746 yards last year in 12 games to go along with 6 TD's.  He and Sanchez immediately clicked.  As a Jets fan I agree he is probably overpaid, but what no one seems to want to realize is that you pay based on what the market is dictating.  He is the best FA WR available, so he is going to command the most money.  It is simple logic really.  As for Prisco.  If Santonio signed for $1 it would be written about in a negative light.   Prisco doesn't know how to write a positive Jets article.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

Prisco you should have posted his stats to further strengthen your argument.  This guy is extremely overrated, generally the Steelers do not make mistakes on retaining players.  Mike Wallace is already better than Holmes.

The Jets should have retained Braylon Edwards, a much more explosive player and all around better.  If you're a running team, you get WRs that block, Holmes avoids blocking.  And you definitely don't overpay.  Sign em both for about $6.5M each, rather than one for $10M.

First of all, Prisco, you are commenting on a contract you know nothing about. The $ amounts announced are rarely the actual figures the player will get and you don't know if there is anything in the contract that protects the team if he were to get a drug suspension. Second of all, if you watched any Jet games last year you would know that Santonio was invaluable to the team in the second half and the playoffs. He is a top young talent at the WR position regardless of how many catches he has had. It's not like he has been in pass happy offenses his whole career.

Two words for the epic signing: game changer!  Sure it may be a bit high, but Holmes stretches the field and is a great ball handler.  He can make the toughest of catches look easy.  His chemistry with Sanchez became very evident towards the end of the season.  Having him back in a Jets uniform is a step in the right direction towards a championship.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

Every player in the league is one offense away from a suspension of some kind.  Does that mean no one gets a big contract?  The Jets are comfortable with Holmes, he's comfortable with them and most important - the young QB loves the guy.  You need to keep Sanchez moving forward and changing receivers on him isn't the way to go about it.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

You aren't very bright, are you? Even if Prisco is biased against the Jets, what in this article are you arguing about? I don't think many people feel Holmes is worth all that money, and he is an infraction away from a huge suspension. The Jets have a very good team and an inside track to winning the AFC East (this coming from a Pats fan) but that doesn't mean they don't make mistakes. For the Jets sake I hope you aren't a typical fan.
