Jets go crazy for Holmes

Are the New York Jets crazy?

They give Santonio Holmes, a receiver who has had more than 55 catches just once in his career, is one failed drug test away from a possible year-long suspension by the league, a contract that will pay him $50 million with $24 million in guaranteed money.

That $24 million, if true, is the most ever for a receiver. What?

This guy hasn't finished in the top-10 in catches in a season yet in his career. The Steelers were so turned off by him that they traded him for a fifth-round pick last summer.  The Steelers tired of his off-field issues, one of which led to a four-game suspension to start the 2010 season with the Jets.

Holmes is a nice player. And he has speed. Plus, Mark Sanchez loves him. But isn't that a lot of money for a risky player, who you wouldn't even consider a top-10 receiver in the NFL?

I can't imagine there was a great market for him -- which is why I always felt he would go back to the Jets --because of all the baggage. So somebody please explain the money to me.

Last time I checked, this wasn't Al Toon or Don Maynard we are talking about.

" Mark Sanchez is still evolving and isn't yet an elite QB like Brady and Manning. "

the fact that a rediculous statement like this is the first thing you state.. thats as far as i got in your entire post.. to even mention a weak ass arm like sanchez to brady or manning.. wow.. clueless.. and even if the jets won a few rings its because he has a stacked team around him not because of sanchez. What brady and manning have done is because of THEM. Other than POSSIBLY John Beck Sanchez is the WORST QB in the entire league without question. When they need a big play.. they RUN. Please take your flyers logo off, we expect flyer fans to have some intelligence. "Stick" to hockey.

Hey Pete. Get off your high horse !!!

Mark Sanchez is still evolving and isn't yet an elite QB like Brady and Manning. He still needs talented WR's to maximize his potential. Brady and Manning are once a generation QB's that can make WR's better than they actually are. Sanchez isn't there and may never get there. The Jets need a top list WR to balance out their attack on offense. Without Santonio, teams will line up and stuff the run. Opposing defenses need to stay honest with Holmes in the fold so they don't line 8 in the box against the Jets running attack.

I would argue Holmes is the most explosive WR Gang Green has had since Wesley Walker when I was a kid. Now all they need is sign Randy Moss. Remember 1998 and 2007. Moss's first act with a contender (98 Vikings 07 Patriots) are always his best.

He's still better than Edwards. Plus, when you have 2 teams in a bidding war for the guy only he will win.

Sure, Holmes has only broken the 55 catch mark once, but last year he would have had about 70 catches, 1000 yards, and 8 TDs if he'd played a full 16 games.  The year before he had 80 catches, 1200 yards, and 5 TD.  Clearly he's a better player than some so-so guy capable of only 50 catches.  Also, he had 2 TDs in 3 playoff games last year.  No need to piss that away to save a buck.

Listen i hate the Jets more then anyone but really who are the Jets gonna sign to play Wr?? If they pay Edwards thats worse cause he always in trouble with the law and his DUIs, plus hes always banged up, the jets had no choice to pay him that money or  he walks. You have to give Sanchez a chance out there and u need a top wr, he they clicked after he came back from the 6 games he missed last yr. And holmes never catching 55 balls is understandable but he played in Pitt where he was the number 2 and in a run heavy offense, and also in a run heavy offense in NY...

Actually, I thought Brett Farve did a very good job for the Jets. It was Favre's presence that created a lot of room for our running game. The defenses had to respect Favre's arm, so they couldn't stack the box against the run like they had done the year prior. Our talented young O-Line developed nicely with the help of former Steeler Alan Faneca, and RB Thomas Jones magically went from turd to All Pro. The difference? Brett Farve under center compared with pop gun armed Chad Pennington the year prior.

Farve was 8-3 and was voted to the Pro Bowl, eleven games into that 2008 season. Then at some point in there, Favre got hurt and Mangini didn't have the nuts to pull him. Also, I blame Mike Tannenbaum for not having a better backup then 2nd round BUST Kellen Clemens. Not sure if Mangini should get some blame on Clemens. Either way, you should always have a capable backup QB.

Jets go crazy for Holmes

Most of the articles I read from Prisco I usually think he doesn't have a clue. This one reiterates that.

Santonio Holmes came up with some clutch big plays last year. Santonio has got great hands, he's got deep speed and he's clutch. The baggage stuff.... get in line. Fortunately, Rex Ryan doesn't sweat the small stuff.

Pittsburgh was so fed up with Santonio Holmes for his off field behavior? How about Ben Roethlisberger's off field behavior? Rashard Bin Mendenhall? Hines Ward with a DUI. C'mon. They're not problems, but Santonio was?! Please.

I thought Braylon Edwards was terrific for us last year. I believe he had just one dropped pass. There were some catches where Braylon looked like Mark Bavaro carrying defenders into the endzone. I'd love to see Braylon back as well, but if he's looking for more money elsewhere, I'd love another "too much baggage" signing..... enter Randy Moss. I think Randy Moss would love playing for Rex Ryan, and the expectations would be fairly low off of last season. Hell, I wrote Randy Moss off back in Oakland. Fool me once, shame on you.

Are they the Redskins North?    Santonio Holmes isn't worth his bank either.
