Jets go crazy for Holmes

Are the New York Jets crazy?

They give Santonio Holmes, a receiver who has had more than 55 catches just once in his career, is one failed drug test away from a possible year-long suspension by the league, a contract that will pay him $50 million with $24 million in guaranteed money.

That $24 million, if true, is the most ever for a receiver. What?

This guy hasn't finished in the top-10 in catches in a season yet in his career. The Steelers were so turned off by him that they traded him for a fifth-round pick last summer.  The Steelers tired of his off-field issues, one of which led to a four-game suspension to start the 2010 season with the Jets.

Holmes is a nice player. And he has speed. Plus, Mark Sanchez loves him. But isn't that a lot of money for a risky player, who you wouldn't even consider a top-10 receiver in the NFL?

I can't imagine there was a great market for him -- which is why I always felt he would go back to the Jets --because of all the baggage. So somebody please explain the money to me.

Last time I checked, this wasn't Al Toon or Don Maynard we are talking about.

Prisco, you don't understand the game if you're basing you assessment solely on numbers. Of the top 11 receivers based on receptions, seven of them did not make the playoffs. Stats dont mean squat. Holmes alone won four games last year (Houston, Cleveland, Detroit, NE playoff). I've been a Jet fan since 1964 and Maynard, Sauer, Toon, Walker nor Chrebet ever performed at this level in the clutch in one season. And Holmes only played in 12 games. He's in his prime and now in his second season with a developing Sanchez. How can you say he's not a top ten receiver??????

Santonio reportedly left money on the table to play for the Jets over the Redskins.

Nnamdi is now reportedly willing to leave money on the table to play for the Jets over all other.

Rex Ryan is THAT beloved?

"Prisco is right, at least in his main point.  Holmes is a second tier wide out, and the Jets paid premium money. Th most ever guaranteed money for a wide receiver?  For Santonio Holmes?????  If you think this is a good idea, frankly, you're an idiot"

where do you get this second tier nonsense from, the Jets young FRANCHISE qb absolutely loved throwing to this guy who is a game changer undoubtedly...

Confirmed, per source, CB Nnamdi Asomugha willing to take less money to come to Jets. OK with being second-highest paid CB behind  .

It came down to Braylon v. Holmes, both have similiar background issues in that they face significant suspensions if involved in future trouble.  Which one is more likely to be involved in trouble?  Toss up, but probably Edwards being the booze hound, assaulting people, and driving drunk v. Holmes the admitted pothead.  Stay off the grass Santonio!!!  J-E-T-S!!!!

Braylon is tough to let go.  Big, tall, fast, makes some spectacular catches (and drops, although minimized last year).  He's also a good blocker for a WR, making plays down the field and playing until the whistle blows.  Wish they could resign him too, but if you had to make a choice, SH was the right one.

@.....a few steps away from winning a Super Bowl? try 2 steps. There were a few questionable calls last year and you still just barely beat us, had that game been played on our home turf im sure things would of been different. i hope we see that this year. im glad u kept it real and admitted Holmes is a good player but keep it 100%,  a few steps away lol dont be salty cuz u guys couldnt handle the Pack. And IF somehow we can snag Nnamdi Asomuga the whole league will be put on notice WATCH OUT FOR THE JETS
