Eliminate kickoffs? I'm OK with that

I can't believe the uproar over the rules change to move kickoffs up 5 yards to the 35.

Now we have Patriots coach Bill Belichcik saying he thinks the NFL would love to do away with kickoffs.

What' s the big sea if they did?  It would be like taking away the jump ball in basketball. Who cares?

Put the ball on the 20 and play football. Special teams is rumored to be a third of the game. That's coach-speak. The realty is that it's more like 1/9th of the game. And that counts extra points, which means players leaning on other players as the kicker kicks.

If they eliminate kickoffs, the special-team minions -- you know who you are -- could still get their kicks from field goals and punts.

Covering kicks is dangerous work. I understand why the NFL has moved the line up.

More touchbacks will mean fewer injuries. So get ready to see the ball blasted out of the back of the end zone.

And then see real football -- the kind played from a scrimmage line.

Huh?  This might be the dumbest thing I've ever read by a sports "writer".  A kickoff return for a TD can totally change the outcome of a game.  A fumble kickoff can also change the outcome of a game.  Sure, most kickoff returns net a few yards only but every now and then it's full on excitement. Screw you Pete.  Your opinion sucks a$$.

since prisco wants the nfl to be more like arena ball he doesnt understand this has a big impact on field position and scoring will go down but he has said dumber things in the past so im not surprised

Getting rid of kickoffs would also eliminate the onside kick! What is more exciting than seeing Brady or Manning enginering a late second win after getting the ball from an onside kick?  Getting rid of the kickoff would be one of the stupidest things the NFL would have done.

Prisco's opinion on the NFL getting rid of kickoffs ranks right up there wih his opinion of trading Payton Hillis for Brady Quinn. Denver got a STEAL right Pete?

Getting rid of kickoffs is stupid. You're taking out the foot in football.

As it stands, I'm surprised so many people are bothered over it.  Offensive drives starting at the 20 have what... a 13-14% chance of resulting in a TD?  That's good odds for the Defensive coordinators.  Plus, kickoffs under the new rules that are realistically fieldable will probably play out more like punts (given the shorter distance between the coverage and the ball carrier).  So you just need one good punt return guy to handle both types of kicks.  That gives you a tiny bit more roster flexibility, which always makes coaches happy.

As for the idea of eliminating the kickoff play altogether... well, as a viewer, I wouldn't mind.  Especially if you're watching it on TV.  You wouldn't have the "extended commercial break, kickoff, then another extended commercial break" combo that feels like such an incredible waste of time.  Then again, special teams have rarely ever been a source of any excitement or inspiration on the team I root for, so maybe I'm just biased.
