ATLANTA -- Their coach was back at his familiar spot on the sidelines Sunday, and now the New Orleans Saints are back in their familiar spot: Firmly atop the NFC South Division.
With Sean Payton on crutches on the sideline for the first time since tearing up his leg a month ago in a sideline collision, the Saints came into the Georgia Dome and took a strong hold of the division race with a 26-23 overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
The Saints are now 7-3 heading into the bye week. What has to be even more encouraging is that a defense that had been struggling, especially on the road, played better -- although that unit did make it interesting late when the Falcons moved to a game-tying field goal in the final seconds.
The defense made a huge stop on a fourth-and-inches play from the Atlanta 30 in overtime to get the ball back for the game-winning field goal.
