Raiders make another mistake

Firing Hue Jackson is a mistake by the Oakland Raiders.

Do we expect anything other than that?

Jackson had one year to show what kind of head coach he could be, and then he's gone? I know he might not be the handpicked choice of new general manager Reggie McKenzie, and I know he can be volatile and outspoken, but did he really get a fair shake?

The Raiders missed the playoffs at 8-8, but they had a ton of injuries decimate the speed on offense in the final six weeks. That showed up. It's why Carson Palmer never looked like the player the Raiders expected he would look like when they traded premium draft picks to land him.

Yes, the Raiders led the NFL in penalties, but when have they not?

Jackson deserved at least another year. I don't know he would have turned into John Madden or Tom Flores or any of the other successful Raiders coach. But he needed at least another year to show if could have done so.

To borrow from Raiders-speak: Just stupid, baby.

Raiders make another mistake

Jackson was a decent head coach, but as an Oakland reporter recently pointed out, no one takes a GM job without getting to pick his coach.  The fact that Oakland had a coach but not a GM was an oddity that resulted from death of Mr. Davis in-season.  Hopefully, the new coach does not junk the entire system.  Hue will be a good coach somewhere else, but he's not a GM, and he didn't endear himself to anyone at the end of the season with his comments.

Raiders make another mistake

Good move, raiders. Now get a real coach. Jackson is a good OC...he is NOT a HC.

"Yes, the Raiders led the NFL in penalties, but when have they not?"

- You did not just say that did you? This was an actual commentary from a professional sports journalist? Yeah, since they were undisciplined before he absolutely had to keep the status quo, right?

You're right, but yet if they fired every coach who didn't fix that (since they lead the league in penalties every year) the Raiders wouldn't have a coach past one year.
Beyond that...oh lord...I agree with something Prisco wrote.  I need to go shower now

Raiders make another mistake

Carson Palmer never looked like the player the Raiders expect because they expected a player that wasn't washed up and with no good QBing for about 4 years. Jackson got Palmer and should've been fired because of it. Of all the QBs to choose from he went with a prematurely age Palmer who has such a great fighting spirit that he was only too happy to walk away from the game he supposedly love. Nothing like giving away the best part of you next drafts for a guy who quit on his team and career.

Pete are you not also forgetting the clause in Hue's contract that says he only has to deal with the boss, so if Mark did not want to sing off on McKenzie being the boss, the chain of command would not be true and the coach could just circumvent any changes the GM wanted to make. Don't get me wrong, as a Radiers fan I did not want to see Hue go, but you also do have to have a line of communication and a single philosophy going forward and that clause would have left the door open to keep the dysfunction going. Oh and on the borrowing of the Raiders-speak, you might as well just stick with only reporting half the story

Raiders make another mistake

I was shocked to hear this news!  I was happy with Hue's performance seeing our track records from the last few years.  BUT this isnt the old Raiders anymore as we just witnessed.  At the edn of the day im sure Reggie knows what he is doing.  He was grommed by one of the best and not only did Ron Wolf agree he was the right choice but so did JOHN MADDEN.  Look im tired of the instability we seem to have at the coaching position but i feel like it was a move that needed to be done sooner than later.

I think Hue ran his mouth a little too much at the end of the season and im sorry but no coach should think they have all the power because a GM was not in place.  He made some INTERESTING moves and now our future is on hold as far as the draft.  Was i glad to see Carson suit up in Silver and Black sure i was but not for the ransom he paid.  It showed that Hue is all about making those impulse buys.

Now Reggie can fully say he has his team in play and if it blows up than he can have himself to blame and not some coach that he didnt hire.  I hope we bring in someone that can discipline his player.  Leading the league in penalties is ridiculous and i think its time for a new coach to bring in some new fire and discipline.  I have plenty of trust with Reggie hes a raider at heart.

Remember there's those that have played and those who didnt play and chose to write.  Just because some writer thinks its a bad call doesnt mean its the end of the world.  Half the time all they write about is how terrible we are lack of discipline and need a new coach.....there you have it!

The HC is supposed to install some sort of discipline to turn that around. He lost control of his players and then had the stones to say that he was going to take a stronger hand in the entire organization! Who in their right mind thinks that would keep their job after saying that for the owner, incoming GM, and all the players to hear. He slammed the door on his own a--.

Raiders make another mistake

C'mon Prisco. you're sounding like any other uneducated fan. Hue may have deserved one more year based on the fact that he only had one year and had to deal with some pretty big injuries, but let's get this straight. The Raiders set an all time mark for penalties/yds. While the players are the ones committing those, it's a reflection of the head coach if he can't get that under control, even by a long shot. Also, Hue's HUGE gamble for Palmer blew up in his face. the team lost 4 of it's last 5 after controlling the AFC West, and his quest for power may well have undermined his tenure in Oakland.
Also, McKenzie, like most GM's, want their own guys on board. Hue said in an earlier report today that he was given the opportunity to plead his case for remaining. He obviously didn't make a very good case.
We all know how successful Ron Wolff was in his time with Oakland and GB. If Ron Wolff says McKenzie is as good of a candidate as there is, that's good enough for me. Let McKenzie do his thing and give him a few seasons to see how it works. If he blows up then he deserves to get kicked out the door, but the Raiders are in need of a complete makeover, from many of the coaches, to players, to the general philosophy that has stunk up the air in Oakland for a decade now.

BREES,,,Try to imagine DMC and Palmer finally

next year.  I can see a roll out or a screen and he is taking it to the house.  With DMC back (i hope the whole year)...Palmer will be what we are hoping him to be.  What do you think?
