Brees taking care of Brees

They will call Drew Brees selfish.

He's thinking about himself -- and just himself.

How dare he not take a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in the NFL and instead force the Saints to use the franchise tag on him to keep him off the market?

Here's what I say to that: Brees has to do what he feels is best for himself. There are a lot of people out there who will say Brees should have signed a deal with the Saints to help the team get some cap relief to sign Carl Nicks and Marques Colston before free agency.

That's not his duty. He serves himself. He's an independent contractor. If he and his agent don't like the deal the Saints have offered, they don't take it.

The other part is on the team. They need to make it work.

Having said all that, let's get off this Brees-is-the-savior of New Orleans talk while we're at it. If this negotiation has taught us anything, it's that all players -- no matter what image they portray -- are in it for themselves.

Never forget that.

But don't get mad at Brees. He's looking out for No. 9 -- or in this case, as it always is, No. 1.

Pete you really are an idiot. Your definition is the exact meaning of greed not the opposite. I ask you this Pete, What good is NOT signing the highest offered contract ever, to hold out for more...to lose out on reatining other key players...ONLY to be asked maybe as early as next year to RESTRUCTURE YOUR CONTRACT. So I ask, why didn't he just take the highest ever offered? Greed!

Spoken like a true sports writer.  The highest contract in the NFL isn't bad for a guy 33.  What is bad is Brees trying to squeeze every penny so no one else can be signed.  Let's see how he does next season now that he has insured that Nicks, Colston, and none of the other top free agents will be there...If he still has the type of numbers he had this year without them, give him the bank but if not then he becomes a self centered guy like a lot of athletes...

Saints were hoping to agree with brees and use the Tag on Colston. Now they will probably lose either Nicks or Colston due to the cap

Get your facts straight retard. He only broke Marinos record by 400 yards and in week 16 not 15, if the 49ers would have lost that week then the saints would of had a bye and he would not have played week 17. Why wouldn't you want to break a record that was untouchable for 18 years.  He was close last year 12 yards short.  You are telling me that if it was you and you had looked up to Marino as a kid you wouldn't have wanted to break his record. Your full of BS

Maybe they should consider trading Brees and getting all those draft picks to replace the ones they will probably lose due to the recent problem.  This may end up being a great landing spot for Manning as he could go back home and play for a pretty decent team.

I guess people like talking because there were only two opitons for the Saints; sign Bress and franchise Nicks or franchise Bress and sign Nicks. Of course there is a risk but in free agency there is always a risk. As I look it at it's about time that we (Saints) are good enough to have these types of issues.

This shouldn't surprise anyone.

People have this image of Brees being such a class act, but the fact is that he is not. Remember him rushing his team to the line so he could break Marino's record when the Saints were up by 1,000 points against Atlanta in week 15 (when he still had two weeks remaining to break the record)? That, and now this.

He is no class act.

That is exactly what we need, Prisco, more people looking out for themselves. Good thinking.

There is a difference between taking care of yourself and greed.

The man is a multimillionaire who is about to sign a contract for a boatload of more millions. Does he really need a couple more million a year? Really?

This is embarrassing for the Saints and Brees, who together should have reached a deal before now.

On the other hand, if Brees plays with the tag this year, that frees up a lot of money to sign other players. The $14 million tag is certainly less than what would have been paid to him in base and bonus this year.

Do you feel better now?  Are you talking about yourself?  How petty and juvenile when you OBVIOUSLY don't know what all is going on with the situation.
