Long a good move for Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins did the smart thing agreeing to contract terms with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long Tuesday.

Long did the right thing as well.

The Dolphins, who will take him first in Saturday's NFL Draft, need help on their offensive line and Long can be one of those 10-year-plug-them-in lineman that all teams need. It was a perfect match, much more so than if they had agreed to terms with Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston or Virginia defensive end Chris Long.

With those two, there would have been a position switch involved if they were the pick. Both were college defensive ends who would have moved to outside linebacker in the Dolphins' 3-4 scheme. That's using the first-round pick on a player who you're speculating can make a move.

There's no reason for that. Long is the safe choice.

As for Long's taking the deal, why wouldn't he? He got $30 million in guaranteed money, which isn't what JaMarcus Russell got in the first spot last year, but it is more than what Long would have received if he went second to the Rams.

There's also no state-income tax in Florida and there is in Missouri. That has to mean another big chunk of money each year.

And what young player wouldn't want to play near the trapping of South Beach?

It made way too much sense for the marriage not to happen. Long to Miami is the right pick for the Dolphins.

Long a good move for Dolphins

A lot of people may criticize this as not being a very sexy pick or spoiling the fun of draft day.  The LA clippers have a history of enjoying draft day.  The dolphins did the right thing - both in their choice and in their timing.  If a manning is in the draft take him otherwise don't take a qb.  A qb can be found and developed - ala Kurt Warner, John Unitas etc.  Its hard to take a Manning and stick him behind a picket fence hoping he survives and leads you to the promised land.  Signing the pick before the draft sure beats chancing a holdout going into training camp.  The Raiders should have signed Russel before the draft or picked someone else.  They needed help more than headlines.  Good Job Fins.  One Lineman does not an offense make but I wouldn't be surprised to see the fins win 5 to 7 games this year.

Long a good move for Dolphins

I think they will either go with Chris Long or Vernon Gholston, with Gholston being my choice of the two. Gholston has proven himself time and time again and I think he is one of the few that could step right in and keep up with the fast pace of the NFL.

Who will the rams take?

Since NO. 1 is gone who going to be No. 2 (1) Rams??....a lot of people would say chris long...but im more inclines to say Glenn Dorsey, how can you pass on the next Warren Sapp?  and i guess they could always draft mcfadden and trade for a new O-Line...any thoughts?
