Today, my favorite baseball team, the Milwaukee Brewers, gets the Spring Training portion of their schedule underway.  It is the time of year in which the snow begins to melt away, you have a day here and a day there where shorts are able to be worn, you may be inclined to drive with the window down from time to time, and gosh darnit I have been craving Ice Cream.  Baseball conjures up images of summer, of good time and of a time when life was simpler.  I have had my share of fights with my father, yet one thing we could always talk about was baseball and the Brewers.  I remember many evenings growing up sitting outside grilling with him listening to Ueck (Brewer play by play guy Bob Uecker) on the radio.  I think baseball, moreso than other sports is generational.  I think one of the things you talk about with your parents, grandparents etc is about players who have played before.  I have heard my father talk about Hank Aaron, who was his childhood hero.  I remember hearing him talk about times he saw Willie Mays, Ernie Banks and a host of others show up to old County Stadium to watch them play the Milwaukee Braves and players later to watch the Brewers at that same place.  In 32 days when the Brewers and Cubs open up here in Chicago at Wrigley Field you can be sure I will be taking notes of some of my favorites such as Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, Ben Sheets and other to tell my future children about.

Baseball is in the air!!

I'm not a Brewers (or Braves) fan but I'll relate a little story that some of may enjoy (hopefully).  One of my sisters was living in Milwaukee (South Milwaukee actually) back in the 60s and my parents and I went to visit her and my brother-in-law, who I believe was working for Champion Sparkplug at the time.  I don't recall the exact year but it was some time in the mid-60s I think - I was around 11-12 years of age, I think.  The Braves were still playing in Milwaukee and we went to a game at old County Stadium while we were there.  The Braves were playing Houston (not sure they were even the Astros yet...may have still been the Colt 45s) and it was Joe Morgan's rookie year, if I remember correctly.  Anyway, Morgan went something like 5 for 5, or 6 for 6, something ridiculous like that for a rookie (or for anyone, for that matter).  You knew he was going to be a heckuva ball player.  The game was close throughout and Henry Aaron hit one out in the late innings (maybe the 7th or 8th) and the Braves won it.  It was an excellent and exciting game which I will always remember.  You guys sound too young to be around at that time but you can ask your fathers or grandfathers if they remember a game like that (if they were at that one or listened to it on the radio).

Baseball is in the air!!

I was folllowing the Brewers today.  They were up 6-0 after 2 and then went to the bench.  Vargas started with 2 shutout innings.  Prince was 2 for 2, Hall, Cameron, Gross all got hits, Braun hit one out.  Hall back at third helped turn a DP.  I think this will be a fun race this season.

Baseball is in the air!!

I'm with ya Pack, the Cubs opened with the Giants today. I've been following the score all day as if it were the World Series. I can't wait until opening day, easily the best day of the year for me. Spring Training also leads way to the eventual grilling of Brats, and consumption Sam Adams Boston Lager! I can feel it!
