Alexander passes test; Skins to add him

Posted on: October 14, 2008 12:56 pm

My sources in Washington tell me that running back Shaun Alexander looked good in this morning's workout and, if he passes the physical, will be signed by the club. Alexander showed up in good shape and did enough that club officials recommended adding him. He is expected to be paid the league minimum, and will serve as a backup to Clinton Portis -- in effect, taking the spot of Ladell Betts, who will be out 3-4 weeks.

Alexander passes test; Skins to add him

seems to me i remember hutchison saying when he left the hawks for the vikings that alexander was done. all he wanted was a couple good years for 1 big payday & he would be through. low & behold he has been hurt or worthless ever since signing that big contract.

I am glad that shaun is being given one more shot. He fits the system as a stop gap for the Skins. Also, knowing Zorn and Mitchell is a big plus. He is a character guy and will not cause issues with team chemistry. I think it is a good solution for the skins and I wish Zorn was still in Seattle. With our QB play we could use him.

I agree that it's better to have 3 or 4 decent RB's than 1 or 2, i would never dispute that.  However, as there were so many teams in need of "decent" RB's, then why was Alexander looked over time and time again?

Portis is right there with Brees and Rothlisberger for MVP so far and Betts is our backup man. Betts is out and that leaves only Rock. So why not bring in someone who could help add some debth for a few carries a game. Remeber he will only be getting 5 or so touches a game so he will be running on a full tank at least in that aspect. The Skins are one of a VERY few teams who still run a feature back system and so SA will not be relyed upon as he would be in most offenses. Zorn is familiar with him as well. Gonna be interested to see what he can do exactly though since hes been deemed 'done' and hasnt had a touch in a long while. FOr minimum price it cant hurt.

In other news so called 'americas team' is suddenly without its punter, top corner, Pacman suspended, Romo out and Felix Jones hurt... oh yea TO is crying like usuall again. Cant wait to see how that all works out. GL with the oldest offensive player in the league throwing to a selfish crybaby loser like TO when his job is really to just manage that offense since hes not Romo.

Alexander passes test; Skins to add him

brosweets, you need to do your research...  In 2006, he missed 8 games...  I'm not saying he's injury prone, just correcting your bad information...

Signing a former MVP for the league minimum as a stop-gap spell back of Alexander's caliber is a steal. The history is there with both Zorn and Stump Mitchell. I see a bunch of  'Skins fans all up in arms about the role that Betts and even Rock Cartwright will assume now with S.A. in the mix... Don't be surprised to see them return to their normal routines when Betts gets healthy. Washington will no doubt make Shaun aware of what is needed/expected from him. They may find that they have got more than they bargained for, and we witness Alexander EARN a greater share of carries here in the next few weeks. I think this is a short-term move with long-term possibilities. I really doubt that the Redskins are going to sell as many #37 jerseys as Seattle did, but it's about helping the team-not bringing in a guy who is going to shake everything up. I like the move, although I feel like there is a couple of teams who needed him worse. I feel as if he will have decent production, and certainly help on precious 3rd down conversions and spelling a winded or banged up Portis in the coming weeks. Adversely, Alexander's durability has been questioned, and he might crumble his first carry...Who knows? It's going to be interesting to see in what capacity Shaun is used once Betts gets back on track, but better to have 3 or 4 decent RBs than just 1 or 2.

Alexander passes test; Skins to add him

First off, congratulations to alexander and the skins for what is a good move for both parties involved. As far as playing time, alexander will be a changeup back in washington to give portis a break just like betts was. Personally I am a hawks fan and wish we never would of let him go! He is every bit as good if not better than any back we have now. The only drop in production was due to injury not age! When he is healthy he is a star league mvp rushing champion pro bowl caliber running back that should really be a starter for any team! the people around him do make a difference though so a patchwork line with nowhere to run will hinder performance too just like it would for any running back! Washington has a good line and alexander will excell with whatever amount of playing time he gets. I almost guarantee he will make us in seattle wish we never got rid of him. Mark my words and for the love of god lets hope seattle can bust out of their slump and play like an nfl team again instead of a highschool nightmare!

IF ANY TEAM THOUGHT THIS GUY HAD ANYTHING LEFT DO YOU THINK HE STILL BE OUT THERE. ALEXANDER BECAME A WIMP AND HAS BEEN CALLED OUT BY EVERY FORMER GREAT RUNNING BACK, BECAUSE HE LOST HIS SPINE.  IF WASHINGTON DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING BETTER THEN ALEXANDER AS A BACK UP I FEEL SORRY FOR THEM, BUT I HAVE TO BELEIVE THEY DO. JUST A POOR SIGNING, BUT THEY WILL FIGURE THAT OUT AFTER HIS FIRST CARRY.

NEWS FLASH

Teams that have needed and signed Running Backs since the preseason:  Detroit Lions (rudi), Cincinnati Bengals (benson), Pittsburgh Steelers (najeh), Chicago Bears (kevin jones), among others....

Tremendous coup???  These other teams apparently didn't think so....
