Here's hoping Schwartz gets help

Detroit got smart when it hired Jim Schwartz. I just hope that Schwartz didn't get unlucky. The guy is a terrific defensive coordinator and a terrific guy, and he was going to be hired by someone ... I was just hoping it would be a team that wouldn't need years to dig out. In Detroit it will take years. The Lions hired from the right side of the ball because their defense stinks, but their last head coach was a defensive assistant, too, and that didn't work out so well. And that's why I think Schwartz could be in for a tough haul. His future depends on the people who run the personnel department, and it's been years since the Lions had someone who knew what a draft pick looked like. So find him, Detroit, and give Jim Schwartz a chance. Otherwise, we'll be going through this again in three to four years.

Maybe Detroit should talk to Mike Homgren about a position in their franchise much like that of Bill Parcells for the Dolphins. He ran a winning program in Green Bay and again in Seatle. He would bring a winning mentality and years of experience in football. He was originally named the general manager of the Seahawks when he was hired in 1999 even though his official title was the Executive Vice President/General Manager and Head Coach of the Seahawks. He was terminated as the general manager in 02 even though during his time as general manager he was responsible for the most part of the selection of: Shaun Alexander, Steve Hutchinson, Darrell Jackson. He is great at spotting talent but not so good on choosing for character with selections like Jerramy Stevens. And he had durability issues with Chris McIntosh, and Lamar King.

Okay you say that they haven't known what a draft pick looks like in years.   Well I'd like you to go back and look at the last 8 drafts and tell me who the Lions SHOULD HAVE drafted.   You have the knowledge of what every player drafted has done in the last 8 years and I guarantee that you can't come up with anything better.    It would for sure help to get a great personnel director,  BUT,   if the coaches aren't developing the players and coming up with better gameplans,  it won't matter that you have the right "personnel".  &
nbsp; Marinelli in my opinion spent too much time worrying about establishing "a winning mindset"  rather than focusing on weekly gameplans.   You never saw any resemblance of a quirk in their offensive or defensive schemes from one week to the next.  So I say to Schwartz,  "GET CRAZY WITH IT !"  because the ability to stay one step ahead of the other teams coaching staff is what puts you in the playoffs.    Honestly, unless you played a considerable amount of time in the NFL,  how can you make such a comment on the personnel.    You really think that Detroit  has no one on the team drafted in the last 8 years that is worthy of being in the NFL ?   Man......................the only other question I guess is what did the Lions do to you to cause such bitterness towards them.

1. I'm a Detroiter.

2. I'm a lions fans.

that being said: people can bash the lions organization all they want, 0-16 earns that. What you can not do with any semblance of an IQ is bash the fans of Detroit or the sports of Detroit. We have one of the most knowledgeable and loyal fan bases in america. Ans if you look at our teams as a whole ( MSU, UoM, Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers, heck even the Shock) and you'll know we're competitive in every way. Show me another state with that much balance? Yes, the lions suck. but they do not represent the face of Michigan sports or the people and fans of this great state.

and while no lion fan can get too excited about this team, I like the hire. solid guy, good pedigree, sounds like he has a good plan. Give him two good drafts, a solid FA market and in 3 years we could be competitive. Just one piece of advice, please, please don't draft a QB this year! Shore up the O-lone and the Defense this year and get your QB next year.

You can dislike him as a writer but everything he said is true and it sounds to me like you just dont like hearing the truth. I was born and raised here so I know what I am talking about also. You are correct when you say" Detroit is one of the greatest sports towns" but you are wrong to think they made the right choice for a head coach. The problem with the Lions goes way beyond the coach it goes up to the owner ship which is why the Lions are in the mess they are in. This coach has already been talking about drafting a quarterback which we dont need right now. What this team needs is some offensive lineman that can block. Some defensive lineman that can rush a passer and stuff the run. What this team needs are some cornerbacks that can cover and stay with a wide receiver. So if you think this coach is going to come in hear and take us to the SuperBowl you are in for a rude awakening. Most of the players on this team that went 0-16 had no heart which means they are not winners they are quitters. So you think this coah is going to have free reign to sign free agents, bring in good scouts that know how to draft it hasnt happened before so what is going to change now. We have the same owner, we have 2 of his yes men as the President of Operation the General Manager and one of those was brought here by The names may change but this team hasnt unless they get rid of over half of last years team, draft properly, and learn to sign free agents that arent over the hill but my main reason I dont see anything changing is the owner ship

More despicable times than anyone else?  I live in KC, and we are only a tidbit better than you in the standings  of both football and baseball, so I am not going to say that we are experiencing worse. Plus, we have the Kansas Jayhawks.  HOWEVER, have you ever thought of what the city of Seattle must be going through?  Stop feeling sorry for yourself and blaming Clark Judge for your problems.  He just calls them as he sees them.  The fact that you are getting so upset about the whole thing, just shows that you KNOW that your sports teams aren't that good, and probably won't be for some time.

This comment is idiotic. Please spare us your proclamations on who is a good sportswriter and who is not.

I'm a loyal Detroit Lions fan too. Well, until this year. I realized at around 0-14 that "loyal sports fan from Detroit" is a synonym for "sucker". By being "true loyal fans" we're telling the owners that it doesn't matter what team you put on the field, we'll buy tickets, watch, buy gear, and make you rich regardless. Wake up rj3sports! Get out of the 'i am loyal' catatonia. WCF will only put a quality team on the field once he realizes that Detroiters are winners and won't stand for a losing team. Otherwise we're just going to get slop heaped on us for years to come.

I have resolved to not buy any Detroit Lions merchandise, tickets, or advertised products until they win a game. I encourage all loyal Detroit fans to do the same.

Remember the line from the movie Meatballs:  "It just doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter.

This poor guy still has the ugly reality that the ones responsible for procuring his players are not only unqualified, but have done a BAD job so far in their careers in management.  Do you notice that all the coordinators getting interviews all come from GOOD teams. Why doesn't that apply to a GM and President.  William Clay Ford is the biggest loser in the NFL.  He is the idiot who gave Millen 5 more years after 40,000 fans in the stadium were chanting to fire him.  Who was right you senile moron!  The bad news is that unlike Schwartz  who will get the hell out of town after 3 seasons, we will be stuck with the new M&M for at least 8 years since we know Ford won't replace them no matter how bad they suck.  I am being totally serious here, but our only chance as Lions fans is for the old man to croak.

Thank you Mr. Illitch and Mr. Davidson for giving us Detroit sports fans a reason to open the Sports Section.

i am a big titans fan, with that being said, this was a bad move for the lions. he (jim) has the right system in his mind, but there is no haynsworth, or finigan or griffin or tony brown. he (jim) does his best work againist ball control offenense. he better hope that the packers or the bears dont get a qb. best of luck jim, we as fans will miss you!
