Canty to Giants

Posted on: March 1, 2009 7:10 pm

No one's had a better weekend than the New York Giants. First they sign linebacker Michael Boley. Then it's defensive tackle Rocky Bernard. Now they add defensive end Chris Canty, who agreed to a six-yera, $42 million deal, with $17.25 million guaranteed. "I wouldn't want to play against their defense," said Canty's agent, Brad Blank. Neither would I.

Re: Reese's first bad move!!!

I never said Canty was a pass rusher... though it's entirely possible be could BE one now that he's out of the Cowboys' 3-4 system.  His definite value comes as a run-stuffer.  And once they make the other team one-dimensional, Osi, Tuck and Kiwi can go nuts.  I see Canty playing mostly DT and maybe DE during obvious run situations (goal line, 3rd & inches).  It's possible they could trade Robbins, Cofield or Alford... but I just can't see them giving up a solid piece of the puzzle like Kiwi.  Something's going to happen soon though.  They need to clear up cap space somehow.  Reese seems to be pretty level-headed.  I trust him to have a plan of some kind.  Also, look at their defense... Osi, Kiwi, Tuck, Canty, Boley, Alford, Cofield, Webster, Ross, Thomas, and Phillips could all play big roles... and they're all 27 or younger!  (Nevermind Michael Johnson, Bryan Kehl and Jonathan Goff -- if his back recovers.  They're all young too).  Eli is set, the offensive line is locked up, Jacobs is taken care of (with two young, talented backs behind him) and Boss is in place at TE.  They can afford to trade away several draft picks for a solid #1 WR if they think that's the way to go.

Canty to Giants

Can you speculate who is going to get cut?  Seems like they are now at / over the cap number and they have not yet signed a single draft pick.  Also they have no WR, Manning and Uminura both have 2010 contracts that do.......  is this an all or nothing year?  Who will catch the ball?  Ward is now gone for sure.  Was this great use of the Cap?

Canty to Giants

The Giants won't trade Kiwi.  While the Giants love to have as many DE as possible, I think Kiwi moves back to LB and goes in the rotation with newly acquired Boley.  I could be wrong, but I think they identified a bigger weakness in the LB spot.  The only way I don't see Kiwi moving there is if they draft a LB which is still probable given this rich LB draft.

Sadly it doesn't look like TJ is coming as they have spent a fortune the past weekend and most likely can't pony up what he'll require.  I hope they are not looking to the draft for a #1 WR because that takes at least 2 seasons to develop.  They need to trade some picks for one, and soon.  Most likely, they are holding out on WR acquisitions until they have a better take on the Plax situation.  That decision thankfully is before the draft will allow them to still make a deal if it doesn't look like he will be returning to the team.

Reese's first bad move!!!

Yes, you can never have enough pass rushers, so why did they sign Canty? he is not one.   He has a whopping total of 10 sacks in his 4 year career.  Last year he had 37 tackles and 3 sacks, Barry Cofield had 43 tackles and 3 sacks for the Giants last year.  I just don't get this signing.  I think  this money would have been better spent on the receiver position,  that is what cost the Giants last year in the playoffs.  They scored just 9 points in the playoff game.  I don't care who they have on defense next year, if they only scored 9  points in the playoffs next year, they will be one and done in the playoffs again.

Canty to Giants

as much as i like this pickup i don't understand another high priced de with Justin Tuck osi and kiwi it doesn't make sence unless we make a trade cause i don't see us paying all that money for defensive ends when they all can't be on the field also robbins alford and now bernard but yet we have no receiver unless we trade one like all off you said. I think we might pull a rex pyan and send some players to the rams for Tory Holt or anquan boldin but the giants won't have have all those lineman with those salarys at the start of the season.

Canty to Giants

While I'd LOVE Boldin on our squad, the G-Men won't do it by trading away Kiwi.  Reese is an Accorsi disciple, and his rule of thumb was "you can never have enough pass rushers."  DEs are way more valuable than WRs.  I wonder how they plan to address their glaring need for a #1 wideout though... They've burned through too much money to afford Houshmandzadeh now, and can't seriously expect to waste time grooming one from the draft when they're ready to compete for a title immediately.  A trade would make the most sense.  Hopefully they can use the draft picks they acquired in the Shockey trade to swing something.

Canty to Giants

I see the Gmen either trading away a second rounder for the services of Boldin in the event that Warner dosent resign with Arizona. If not there going Wideout in the first with Nicks or Heyward-Bey.Its going to be a draft filled with Offensive positions with a Saftey drafted in the 3rd or 4th if theres value

Canty to Giants

This is a great signing, as Canty could be a great pass rushing DT, that just wasnt his role in Dallas he was supposed to keep people off D Ware.  Who do they get rid of on the DL.  I say offer Robbins and a 2nd RD to Zona for Boldin.  IF Cassel only went for the 34th pick that is more than enough for Boldin.

Canty to Giants

With the Browns trading Winslow on Friday, I don't foresee Edwards going anywhere.  It would have to be the deal of all-time for Edwards to not be on the Browns' roster at the beginning of the season.

Canty to Giants

Love this move by the Giants. Another versatile DL whe can line-up both inside. Imagine a front 4 of Kiwanuka-Tuck-Canty-Umenyiora coming after a QB on 3rd down situations!

Quick thought, with all the depth the Giants now have up front I wonder if a player like Kiwanuka will be packaged in a deal for a WR...say Boldin or Braylon Edwards perhaps.
