Redskins VP Cerrato behind Sherman Lewis hire

The idea to hire Sherman Lewis as an offensive consultant in Washington belongs to Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' executive vice president of football operations, but make no mistake: Coach Jim Zorn is on board with it.

Cerrato approached Zorn on Monday after the team struggled to beat Tampa Bay and when he made his suggestion Zorn said he would have no problem. "Of course," Cerrato said, "it has to be the right guy. And Sherman fit all of the qualifications."

Lewis worked for coach Mike Holmgren as Zorn worked for him. Lewis knows Holmgren's offense and what is and is not supposed to do. So hiring him, Cerrato said, was "to get a fresh set of eyes here to help the offensive coaches."

The move is similar to one San Francisco made in 1996 when Cerrato was the team's director of player personnel. The 49ers hired former coach Bill Walsh to serve as a consultant for offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, then in his second season with the club. Walsh would sit with Trestman during games and make suggestions, and the plan had mixed results: The 49ers reached the playoffs, where they won a game, but they bowed out in the divisional round to Green Bay. Carolina, then in its second year, won the NFC West.

Lewis is expected to join the team shortly and to act "as one of the offensive assistants," said Cerrato. Washington has struggled to put up points, never scoring more than 17 points in any game, and that was the season-opening loss to the New York Giants.

Maybe the Snyderrato regime starting calling some of the best minds in the business to become 'their observer guy' and all kept turning the offer down. Lewis got the job because he was the best available talent left on the 'their observer guy' board. Just like the team does in the draft and FA signings, just another day at doing it all wrong.

BTW, I wonder what happens if 'Bingo' Lewis observes that the problem with the team is really with the way the Snyderrato regime runs the team? Who does he report that to? And how soon after that does he resume his meals on wheels route driving?<!-- / message -->

Mike Holmgren would be better because he knows to build quarterbacks. Look at Favre and Hasselbeck and I believe he can do it with Jason Campbell. Campbell is not a bad quarterback but Zorn is not the right guy to help him. Plus Zorn is throwing under the rug for his mistakes and that's not right. I've never seen Zorn back him up but put him down in a press conference. I'm not a Skins fan but this team needs a veteran coach to take over. ZORN HAS TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would not consider it mixed results if a second year coach won a game in the playoffs.  Also, what is with the random shout out to Carolina?  Does that even matter in this story?

"Nothing changes. Jim's still calling plays. Everybody's still doing what they're doing. It's just another fresh set of eyes." Seriously? This is pathetic. Why hire the guy if you can't let him do what Zorn clearly sucks at!? I really hope this is a bid to get Mike Holmgren ploy. Because of if not, it clearly shows the incompetence and/or vileness of Vinny Cerrato and the front office. We all know Zorn can't handle coaching the team OR calling plays. He hasn't done anything successfuly so far with this team! But it is more than obvious that Vinny wants to save face...and that's because it's an damned ugly one. Don't do yourself any favors Vinny...we all know you're terrible. Don't try to hide it by your lousy 'fresh set of eyes' quote.

Zorn began 2008 without even having a 2-minute drill installed and the Skins wasted a key first-half scoring opportunity.

This year, the highlights are the bonehead decisions, like failing to call for an easy FG with a 2 pt. lead, less than 2 min. to play, and an opponent with no timeouts remaining.  Zorn is real lucky the failed TD attempt on 4th down didn't come back to haunt him - he gave the lowly Rams a chance to win the game with enough time for a potential field goal.

And how often do you see assistant coaches rushing out on the field to pull the coaches arms down before the officials notice he's trying to call timeout?  You could see the sudden look of sudden understanding on Zorn's face when the assistant was obviously explaining to him that he wanted to let as much time as possible run off the clock before calling time out.

And then there's the play calling. The defense stacks the middle on 3rd and long so the Skins call a run up the middle?  One example of many.

And after losing to Detroit, Zorn's "we're coming along" remarks reminded me of the knight in Monte Python's Quest for the Holy Grail who keeps getting limb after limb cut off in a sword fight but keeps telling his opponent how he's going to thrash him.

If the Redskins front office does not finally realize that Zorn is in over his head, the Redskins front office is in over it's head.

Folks forget that Joe Gibbs brought in Bill Mustgrave in 2005 to assist with the Offense. It could only be a move to get someone to help with the play calling.
