Shanahan looks like a certainty in Washington

A source close to Mike Shanahan said it's "99.99 percent" certain the former Denver coach takes the job with the Redskins. Of course, that is not exactly news. Shanahan has been on the Redskins' radar since the beginning of the season, and speculation has  been rampant that he takes the job.

However, the question becomes: How much power will he have over personnel? According to those who should know, Shanahan will be in charge of everything, with final say over personnel. That means he will assume a position like the one he had in Denver, where he ran the Broncos.

But it was there that Mike Shanahan the GM got Mike Shanahan the head coach in trouble. Shanahan's questionable drafts cost him in the end, with underachieving players -- particularly on defense -- crippling the Broncos.

I once thought the problem with Washington would be going to a franchise without a quarterback in place, but that, apparently, is not an issue. The Redskins' plan is to draft one, with Shanahan picking the quarterback he thinks is most worthy, then working him a year behind Jason Campbell.

Anyway, the Shanahan hire seems virtually certain, with one source saying he would expect the Redskins to make an announcement no later than mid-week.

Jason Campbell is a restricted free agent.  I'll assume you know that means the right to match any offer.  It would make sense to keep Campbell as the starter while grooming his replacement.  But I doubt Jason wants that scenario.  I also doubt anyone out there is going to make a huge offer to him.  But if they do I'd be surprised if the Skins didn't let him go and find an old veteran to be a stopgap.  We'll see.

Shanahan looks like a certainty in Washington

riddle me this oh genius sports writer. why would campbell a 4 year starter take a 1 year deal in washington, a place he hatas. he might sign here, but will be more than a 1 year contract. remember what happened in cleveland with derek anderson and brady quinn. that is more realistic. no chance campbell's agent would let him take 1 year. now, if he gets franchised, then he has no choice. but not sure the skins want to pay him 10-12 mil next year.  bottom line. all former SB coaches that return to coaching are 0-11 in their pursuits of another SB. this will be no different. you saw shanahan had his franchise QB in denver..what did it get them...losing.  this is all about rekindling the optimism with skins fans so danny can maintain his season ticket holder fan base and make his millions. he could care less about the team. all about the benjamins..

No offense man, but that sounds like Dan Snyder playing Madden 10 to me. You can't simply trade/spend for two of the top receivers in the game (Marshall, Boldin) plus draft two competent offensive linemen, plus turn crap into gold (Betters/Randle El for decent draft picks). The Redskins overall is going to take a few years. I'd suggest taking a page out of Detroits book, take a chill pill, wait and hope for the best.

Don't do it Mike! Good choice by the Skins, but Mike what are you thinking? I know there is only 32 NFL coaching jobs, but that job is a gurentee of losing and annoyance from ownership. They have no depth or much talent at key starting positions!

Shanahan looks like a certainty in Washington

shanahan is the right fit for the redskins finally someone who is not affraid to kick some but, get in your face, this team has needed since the early 90's first we need to trade cooley, s.moss , randle el, or release them cooley should bring a 2 or 3 pick, f. davis is ready and lets make a move for brandon marshall, a. boldin, and in the draft lets draft the best 2 o-lineman we can get a succesor for portis a change of pace back and lets dump l.betts.   hopefully shanahan is reading this the foundation is there have faith in cambell get a line to protect him and with shanahans guidence this could be a great team

How can he work one year under campbell? I thought Cambell will become a free agent after the season.

Shanahan looks like a certainty in Washington

I was wondering where Shanahan would end up. Why would he want to go to Washington??
Pros - essentially the entire team needs an overhaul       - turning this team around will only cement his status
Cons - Daniel Snyder  (will this man finally learn that one cannot play fantasy football with real players and win!!!)

Judge is right. Shanahan is a good choice as a coach, for the skins I hope that he is not the GM, because he can't draft well (except RB's). Either way, an upgrade over Zorn. But the skins won't improve until they improve their QB play and both lines.
