Eagles' Brown, Gocong on verge of going to Browns

The Philadelphia Eagles are close to completing a deal, sources said, that would send disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong to Cleveland in exchange for one of two packages -- either a draft pick and player or two draft picks and a backup. The deal, which was expected to have been completed by now, is contingent on Brown gaining a new contract.

That, of course, has been the subject of Brown's unhappiness for the past year. It was last April that he demanded to be traded when the Eagles refused to renegotiate his deal, which had four years remaining on it. The Eagles didn't budge, and Brown not only played the season; he played so well that some persons within the organization thought he deserved Pro Bowl consideration -- with Brown producing a career-best five interceptions and returning a fumble and interception for touchdowns.

However, Brown was one of a handful of players -- including quarterback Donovan McNabb and cornerback Asante Samuel -- who did not appear when the Eagles opened their offseason workouts this week, leading to speculation that he might be on the trading block. A second-round draft pick in 2002, Brown didn't miss a game the past six years and missed only one start during that time.

Gocong, a third-round draft pick in 2006, never became the pass rusher the Eagles had hoped and last year lost his starting job as the team's strong-side linebacker late in the season to Moise Fokou. A resticted free agent, Gocong earlier this week signed a one-year tender with the Eagles. He is expected to play an inside linebacker position with Cleveland.

It is unclear when the trade will be finalized, but sources indicated that it could be completed in "the near future" -- with Brown's contract serving as the last major obstacle. It is also unclear how high the draft picks could be, but the Browns have five in the first three rounds.

When completed, it will be the third major trade pulled off in the past three weeks by new Cleveland president Mike Holmgren. Holmgren on March 14 sent quarterback Brady Quinn to Denver and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to Oakland for fullback Peyton Hillis and draft picks.

Eagles gotta take it because McWormkiller is too  emotional to be able to handle knowing he was shopped around.

Oyoyer, you sure are a genius.  a 4th round pick... NAILED IT!!!  And they got a 5th too, plus some guy named Alex Hall I've never heard of.    But just wanted to let you know that you got the value exactly right.  Next up for my prognostication skills, McNabb won't be able to fetch more than a third and a fifth UNLESS Crazy Al starts believing that the Raiders can make the playoffs next year AND doesn't care about paying a 20 mill franchise tag.  At this point, Eagles gotta take it because McWormkiller is too emotional to be able to handle knowing he was shopped around.

Eagles' Brown, Gocong on verge of going to Browns

Well, I like this move ONLY if the Eagles can get value picks in return, which I think they can.

Sheldon Brown has been one of our most reliable players.  He has been a major part of this team, and a great team player, until he started going around in the media last season running his mouth and trying to deface the organization, briefly.  He then realized that it would get him nowhere, so he then kept quiet and did the job.  Maybe the organization spoke with him and was waiting for the ideal situation to come along for them to mutually part ways.

Let's face it, the Eagles will not give Sheldon a new contract.  This is going to continue to contribute to his unhappiness, and why do that to such a good player and person?  You can argue that Sheldon had his best year, why give him up?  Well, I'm of the opinion that it is all down hill from here for Sheldon.  You seen how he broke down at the end of the season.  Let's be honest, Sheldon's lacking ability to cover a lot of these speed guys nowadays that are dominating the NFL.  He had his difficulties last season as well, and it is only going to get worse with him.  He's not that fast, but is a rare CB that hits like a ton of bricks, which I will always remember fondly of him.

They didn't give Dawkins a new contract, which was their biggest failure last season.  This leads me to believe that they will not give Sheldon a contract.  I think most of Sheldon's good years are going to be behind him as well.  Hope I'm wrong, because I like him a lot as a player, but the Eagles obviously are now listening to his request for a trade.

With Chris Gocong, he turned out not being worth what the organization gave up to trade up and grab him in the 3rd round.  He has a lot of raw talent and size for what they tried to do with him, and he was a good project and gamble for the organization.  However, he is atrocious at pass coverage, which is why he lost his starting job.  They put him in the middle once last season, and he was not very good.  The guy is a pass rusher, bottom line.  I was hopeful he would be able to adapt to the style of LB the Eagles need, but he hasn't.

This trade makes a lot of sense for both organizations to pull.  Gocong, I believe, will be better in a 3-4 scheme rather than the 4-3 scheme the Eagles run.  The thing I don't understand about Judge's report here, is that he is reported to be going to play one of the ILB positions.  He was known in college for coming off the edge and excelled at it to a high level.  Why on earth he wouldn't be considered for an edge rusher as a LB, I don't understand, but he will still work better in a 3-4 and as long as he isn't relied upon to cover anyone on a regular basis.  Heckert is pulling the strings on this one I believe, and I love the job he did for us while he was here.  Great pickup by the Browns.  Jury will be out for a good while on Roseman.

I think with no CBA, it changed the game the Eagles are playing.  I see them attempting to align themselves for one of the deepest drafts in recent memory, and trying to acquire as many value picks as they can, and I believe they truly are rebuilding parts of this team so that they can get back to being a threat for a championship.  The team we've seen the past few years is not a championship team.  I knew they'd be very slow in their maneuvering, but losing twice in a row to your biggest rival in humiliating fashion to end your season had to cause things to change.  The defensive holes have to be plugged, and I don't think one offseason does it.  Get rid of Laws while your at it.  I just hope the end of last season causes the offensive minds of this team to change their philosophy and RUN THE DAMN BALL!  I am not say run the ball for the sake of running the ball.  I am saying, we need a mix of run/pass.  More importantly, we need more high percentage plays called earlier in the game to take pressure off of McNabb or Kolb, or whomever is starting at QB.  I hope they've learned that big plays DON'T WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!  Keeping your defense fresh enough to perform their duties in a satisfactory manner the whole game is crucial.  These McNabb/Reid patented slow starts with all the constant 3 and outs has to end.  Enough is enough.

So, here is hoping that the Eagles get the picks to stock up big time in this draft while there is no CBA.  In a couple of years, just maybe, us Eagle fans will be able to see them once again in contention for a championship.  It has been a great run guys, but let's look at this season for what it is.  The window is closed, and we have to figure out how to reopen it.  Regardless of McNabb staying or going this season, he will not be a part of that solution, as he will end up going to the highest bidder, either now or a year from now.  And Banner is delusional if he thinks this team still is good enough to contend.  He keeps insisting, and I keep thinking he's nuts.  He obviously didn't watch the team against good teams and Oakland last year.  They are, at best, a wildcard loser again this season, but as long as they are still better than the Giants and Redskins, I'll take it.  My expectations are lowered and I'll still be cheering on the midnight green, come what may.

Eagles' Brown, Gocong on verge of going to Browns

While Brown maybe the eagle's most reliable corner and Gocong is a solid linebacker, Mike Holmgren is not going to trade the 38th overall pick.  Besides, with the rodgers situation going on I could see him trading the 3rd round pick and rodgers.  The eagles are salivating over rodgers and I bet Holmgren is very willing to trade him.  Anyone who wants to rock the boat in Cleveland may as well pack their bags cuz they WILL be traded.
