49ers look at Ginn strictly as returner

There are reports out there that the 49ers acquired wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr., from Miami, and, if so, the move makes sense for a couple of reasons: 1) The 49ers need a returner in the worst way, and 2) the Dolphins' acquisition of Brandon Marshall meant somebody was out, and Ginn is the logical guy.

Let's go back to item No. 1. The 49ers have been talking to the Dolphins for sometime about surrendering a fifth or sixth-round draft pick for Ginn, the ninth overall choice in the 2007 draft, and they wanted him not as a receiver but as a kick and punt returner. That's an area where the 49ers were woefully short last season and an area they targeted for the draft.

The 49ers were 23rd in kickoff returns and dead last in punt returns.

Ginn last year returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a 30-25 defeat of the New York Jets, the first NFL player to have two 100-yard TDs in the same game. But he also dropped too many passes and ran out of bounds to avoid contact, two reasons the 49ers don't look at him as anything other than a fourth receiver. He's a straight line guy with speed and not much else.

Hmmm, sounds like a returner, which he is what he will be in San Francisco.

49ers look at Ginn strictly as returner

I'll keep this simple since you have "Vol" in your nick.  Let's go back as many drafts as you can count on your washboard hand so's you don't have to drop your jug.

Notable Bucks NFL players picked in 1st round since 05 - Santonio Holmes, Nick Mangold, Malcolm Jenkins - 3 SB rings and 1 runner-up.

Notable Vols NFL players picked in 1st round since 05 - Jerrod Mayo, Robert Meachem (debatable)

Have a good NCAA season with Son of UGA.  At least we didn't have to hire Bo Schembeckler's son to try and win some games this year.

Now put the cork back in that jug and go mount Rocky Topp (or just help her over the fence).

I'll keep this simple since you have "Vol" in your nick.  Let's go back as many drafts as you can count on your washboard hand so's you don't have to drop your jug.
2005: Tennessee:  0 first rounders Bucks    0 first rounders2006:  Tennessee:  Jason Allen - gratz on those 7 tackles last year for the Fish, J. Bucks:  Santonio Holmes - yeah, that SB MVP scrub     Nick Mangold - ProBowler that starts for the Jets2007:  Tennessee:  Justin Harrell - riding pine in Green Bay    Robert Meachum - #4 receiver for the Saints Bucks:  Ginn - moving toward bustville    Gonzalez - jury's out2008: Tennessee:  Jerrod Mayo - good rookie year, sophomore so-so (BTW, sophomore's the year after freshman, Vol)    Dominique Rogers-Cromartie - star with - OH WAIT - that was the OTHER Tennessee school, SOZ. Bucks:    Vernon Gholston - ugh    2009: Tennessee:   Robert Ayers - decent rookie year, jury's out Bucks:     Malcolm Jenkins - started 6 games + nickel coverage this season - oh, and got a SB ring.
So out of the last 5 drafts where players have a season under their belt, we have 1 SB MVP, 2 SB rings (for starting players, a #2 wideout and a #3 corner), and 1 SB OL starter runner-up.  You have Jerrod Mayo and a #4 receiver for the saints who gravy-trained his ring.
Have a good NCAA season with Son of UGA.  At least we didn't have to hire Bo Schembeckler's son to try and win some games this year.
Now put the cork back in that jug and go mount Rocky Topp (or just help the ol' gal over the fence).

This info should help all the Dolphins fans that are so happy they dumped Ginn for a 5th round pick

Ted has 10 TD's in his three years. 5 rec, 2 rushing, 2 KR, and 1 PR TD.

If you look at how his TD's affected the game, its actually pretty remarkable. Touchdown's 2-9 ALL gave his team the lead! The 10th TD happened in the same game as the 9th, and that game they only won by 5! They needed both.

In the last 6 games that Ginn scored, the Dolphins were 6-0.

7 of his 10 are plays over 30 yards, so he does, at the very least, stretch the field.

He led the NFL in yards per touch in 2009, so you have to account of him every time he's on the field.

And surprisingly, hes already in the top 100 (#84) in KR yards ALL TIME. I know, right?

To say that a guy with two 100+ yard TDs (in the same game!) hasn't made an impact or done anything in the NFL.. a bit of a stretch. Has he been 1st round worthy so far, probably not. Have there been a few guys picked later who have made as big of an impact or bigger? Sure. But for a 5th rounder, this deal has no downside for the Niners.
It's hard to argue with stats isn't it?

GO NINERS!!!

add gholston, larinidus, and the other linebacker that was suppose to be the next big thing, the one they gave archie griffins number too, whats his name I almost forgot it already, Katzmoyer or meyer i forget what a bust

Gholston and Katzemoyer I will give you, although Katz had to retire due to neck problems just as he was starting to get good. To say Laurinaitis is a bust is absolutely ridiculous. He was AMAZING in his rookie year with the Rams. 120 tackles, 2 sacks, 5 passes defended, 2 interceptions and 1 forced fumble playing MLB playing behind a less than average DL. Those are not the statistics of a bust.

49ers take the NFC west in 2010!  #1 Def (west only), #2 Off (west only), top ten in special teams (NFL overall).
Ravens meet the Niners in the Super Bowl, Ravens win due to (gasp) better offense than Niners can muster, and I cry when my Niners fall short, but cheer when Ray Rice takes my fantasy team to Championship glory!
Oh, and the Raiders suck gain....

Em.......Ginn is 180. I don't blame Ginn cause talent evaluators didn't take into account that he's 25 lbs. lighter than your average size receiver. Guys like Welker are the exception. The Bears tried to idiotically turn devin hester into a WR and its flopped. desmond howard was an awesome KR. if the niners keep him as a specialist, watch out. And by the way, you can be soft and play KR.

How is this a bad move? A 5th rounder? Yea, there have been great stories of guys becoming great players that was drafted in ther later rounds, but most of the time, 5th rounders don't become impact players.

With Ginn Jr., the only thing we know we are definitely getting is a real explosive, athletic player. He is a baby in the NFL, and has matured slowly (take into consideration that the dolphins havent been a throwing team in years). He was a great player in college, which made him the 9th pick of the draft. To automatically label him as a "bust", or as a "predictable" player is foolish! When you judge players early in their careers, you set yourself up for failure- sticking your foot in your mouth. The 49ers filled a huge hole!

49ers look at Ginn strictly as returner

Niner fans you're getting suckered by one game against the Jets he was average the rest of the time. He drops passes he didn't return punts for a reason and oh yeah Sparano and Parcells are such softies please. Oh and Pennington stinks? Henne can throw downfield which is why they got Marshall and got rid of Ginn. What Alex Smith will be a huge step up? Come on seriously. The guy will not be a top WR as pointed out in the article and will not do that great returning kicks either. I think getting a 5th for him the same that the Ravens got for Bouldin is a steal alone. Ginn not only dropped passes he could't even handle reverses that well. I wanted him to be great pick but he turned out to be anything but. Dolphins made a great trade here and could use that 5th rounder to get a return guy I mean seriously this was just a great move by Parcells. This was a combination of being burnt on drafting him top 10 and a salary dump. The guy's only been in the NFL for 3 years, and wasn't playing with a top flight offense or offensive coaching staff.

The 49ers were at the bottom of the barrel in special teams last year; way better than anything we had, he runs a 4.3, has 3 years of experience, and still has upside potential. We only had to give up a 5th rounder to get him? Works for me.
