49ers look at Ginn strictly as returner

There are reports out there that the 49ers acquired wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr., from Miami, and, if so, the move makes sense for a couple of reasons: 1) The 49ers need a returner in the worst way, and 2) the Dolphins' acquisition of Brandon Marshall meant somebody was out, and Ginn is the logical guy.

Let's go back to item No. 1. The 49ers have been talking to the Dolphins for sometime about surrendering a fifth or sixth-round draft pick for Ginn, the ninth overall choice in the 2007 draft, and they wanted him not as a receiver but as a kick and punt returner. That's an area where the 49ers were woefully short last season and an area they targeted for the draft.

The 49ers were 23rd in kickoff returns and dead last in punt returns.

Ginn last year returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a 30-25 defeat of the New York Jets, the first NFL player to have two 100-yard TDs in the same game. But he also dropped too many passes and ran out of bounds to avoid contact, two reasons the 49ers don't look at him as anything other than a fourth receiver. He's a straight line guy with speed and not much else.

Hmmm, sounds like a returner, which he is what he will be in San Francisco.

Nice pick Dolphins. Everyone in the world knew that was a terrible pick at the time, how did you not see it?

I guess they were screwed either way because Brady Quinn sucks too.

Another Ohio State Bust!

This school is so OVERRATED! First round draft choices that bust=Carpenter-Dallas-bust; Hawk-Green Bay-bust and Now Ginn! NFL teams don't draft ANY Ohio State players if you want to avoid busts.

He's 10x better then anything the Niners had on thier roster returning the ball. Solid move.

Questionnable

Wow, this guy is scared of contact and how often does a returner not get touched on their way to a touchdown?  SF and their coach have a hard-nosed mentality.  Well, we will see if they can toughen up this softie!

Great move by the Fins

They keep trimming the fat off this team.  Ginn can't catch and is scared of contact.  Great returner he will be in the Stick.  Enjoy SF-I know we didn't

I was a huge Ginn fan for a while... but this is a terrible move for you guys.  A 5th rounder can turn into something decent.  You know what you are getting with Ginn.

Enjoy watching him run directly out of bounds about 75% of his returns.

He is the softest player in the NFL and I would include Kickers in that mix.
