Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

Matt Leinart wonders why he's not the starter in Arizona, but he has bigger concerns. He might not make the team.

I'm serious. People in and around the Cardinals' ballclub tell me that the former No. 1 pick might be cut, not because he hasn't completed a high percentage of passes -- because he has -- but because the players there have no faith in the guy and don't believe they can win with him.

If that is in fact the case, it's over. He not only won't make it as the team's starter; he won't make it, period.

Leinart complained that he's outplayed Derek Anderson, and he has -- if you're talking pure numbers. Leinart completed 82.6 percent of his passes this summer to Anderson's 58.5 and has a higher passer rating (110.3 to 70.3). But several players on the Cardinals say they have more confidence in Anderson than Leinart, who sat behind Kurt Warner the past two seasons. So that pushes him to the backup spot, but then the Cards have a couple of rookies --  Max Hall and John Skelton -- who look good enough to keep.

Except for one thing: If one is released he almost surely is claimed.

That brings us back to Leinart, and why the Cards would go into a season with two rookies as backups. The reason, people close to the Cards say, is that he might not be a positive influence in the No. 2 spot and might hold Hall and/or Skelton back. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has said the decision will be based on more than just stats, with the head coach citing "chemistry" as a key component, and that's where Leinart comes up short. Morever, there's a feeling that the Cards have given the guy plenty of time to prove he can make it at this level and are so frustrated that he isn't farther along they're contemplating the improbable.

I'm not saying Leinart gets cut, but I am saying it's a possibility. Matt Leinart should be worried -- about a lot more than just the starter's job.

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

There will always be doubters no matter who tries what. The fact remains Leinart hasn't had any regular and consistent starts to put a judgement over his head just yet. Many said that Troy Aikman was a hot head from Cali and wouldn't cut the mustard, or Favre would never a a good QB because of his renegade style, and even Joe Montana was questioned when he started due to his lack of ambition or the "nice guy" image and was labeled as being too soft. These great QB's were linked with the Heath Shulers, Ryan Leafs, Joey Hsrringtons and Kordell Stewarts at some point starting out in their careers. The common theme......only time will tell how these, and all, players will end up in history. I remember Steve Young in the AFL and Warren Moon setting records in the CFL before their glory days and success in the NFL. Also one of the other posts mentioned Kurt Warner's journey throughout different leagues and practice squads before his legendary mark stamped in the NFL. So please let the coaches and scouts do their jobs.....no one bothers you while you're buffing floors at the Piggly-Wiggly do they?

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

this is silly...lienart sucks balls...yeah hes completed 80 plus percent of his passes..theyre all check downs....hes complaining on the feild...hes a loser. Hes always been more interested in being a socialite than being a football players, which is why his teammates dont support him. Once the regular season starts hes gonns get bitched up as usual...he was a joke at usc, he had a great team and bush around him...lienart will end up a career backup or out of the league

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

A little bent, Buckeye fan?

SC took you guys to the woodshed two years in a row.

Don't get emotional about something you likely know little about.

AZ fans know what Leinart brings, and he's getting a raw deal.

Yea I think Derek Anderson is kind of a bum. Leinart needs a chance with at least half a season of starts with Fitz and Breaston, I wouldn't count him out yet, but it doesn't look promising. As for Warner, don't want to discredit his achievements but he played for Martz when his "greatest show on turf" offense was new to the NFL. Not to mention he had Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Marshall Faulk, Orlando Pace, Adam Timmerman all in their prime or reaching it. Even Az-Hakim was productive. The defense was pretty stacked then too. He had great players all around him. In AZ he has Fitz and Boldin with Breaston and bryant johnson being reliable weapons. Leinart has less talent around him that Warner did. He needs another chance to start in the season to prove he belongs. And if not...SEEYA.

Leinart should be delighted if he gets cut

First off - hes getting traded not cut - there are too many teams who would be interested.

Do you think Seattle wont give up a 7th rounder for him ?
