Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

Posted on: August 30, 2010 8:38 pm

Matt Leinart wonders why he's not the starter in Arizona, but he has bigger concerns. He might not make the team.

I'm serious. People in and around the Cardinals' ballclub tell me that the former No. 1 pick might be cut, not because he hasn't completed a high percentage of passes -- because he has -- but because the players there have no faith in the guy and don't believe they can win with him.

If that is in fact the case, it's over. He not only won't make it as the team's starter; he won't make it, period.

Leinart complained that he's outplayed Derek Anderson, and he has -- if you're talking pure numbers. Leinart completed 82.6 percent of his passes this summer to Anderson's 58.5 and has a higher passer rating (110.3 to 70.3). But several players on the Cardinals say they have more confidence in Anderson than Leinart, who sat behind Kurt Warner the past two seasons. So that pushes him to the backup spot, but then the Cards have a couple of rookies --  Max Hall and John Skelton -- who look good enough to keep.

Except for one thing: If one is released he almost surely is claimed.

That brings us back to Leinart, and why the Cards would go into a season with two rookies as backups. The reason, people close to the Cards say, is that he might not be a positive influence in the No. 2 spot and might hold Hall and/or Skelton back. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has said the decision will be based on more than just stats, with the head coach citing "chemistry" as a key component, and that's where Leinart comes up short. Morever, there's a feeling that the Cards have given the guy plenty of time to prove he can make it at this level and are so frustrated that he isn't farther along they're contemplating the improbable.

I'm not saying Leinart gets cut, but I am saying it's a possibility. Matt Leinart should be worried -- about a lot more than just the starter's job.

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

If his own teammates are questioning his leadership...well, that says it all. Whether he has the tools to play or not, if he is failing the leadership test...then Leinhart is done with the Cards. Warner's consistent strength, at every stop, even before he harnessed that golden arm, was his leadership.

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

So I'm supposed to believe a team is going to cut a first round draft pick because he's upset that he's been demoted. Every athlete worth anything is upset when they loose their spot, they're the most competitive people on earth. A reason to cut him would be if he said "Oh well, I guess he's just better than me, I'll just sit here on the bench." Who is this clown cbs has given national exposure anyway, what are his "sources", where's his credibility come from. Unnamed sources are dubious to me from known sports coverage personalities (I refuse to call anyone a reporter in this day and age), much less some dude I never heard of. If there were experienced backups in place I'd give the "report" some small credence, this guys just posting a tag that he knows will get hits. I'm done wasting my time reading these blogs on sports sites, very rarely is there anything of any importance on any of them.

OMG where have you been???  Warner was a water boy for years before getting his chance in 1999.  He o9nly got to start because trent Green went down in preseason.  the rest is history.

Re: Leinert - his time is due and the organization owes it to him to try at least 1/2 a season as starting QB.  Problem is he was denny Green's boy and Weisenhunt doesn't "love him".

The problem with Leinhart seems to be: the way he carries himself. I've watched two Cards games this preseason and both times the analysts...Jaworski and Aikman (I think), commented on how Leinhart seems to lack confidence, has no fire...in short, (though neither said it directly) carries himself like a loser. I would have discounted those observations, except you routinely hear rumors of the same judgements by his teammates. THAT is the damning thing...if the team has no confidence in the QB, whether he has the physical tools or not...he's toast.

Kurt Warner, a late bloomer?  Didn't he win a Super Bowl and lead the "Greatest Show on Turf" in his Rookie season? Technically, Warner's rookie season was in '98.  He took over for Trent Green in '99.  Not to mention he was bagging groceries before he got his shot.  I think most of us know the story.  Yeah, he was a late bloomer.

Kurt Warner is a HOF'er and I know the Cardinals made the right decision starting him and having them as their leader, but now you owe it to Leinart to give him atleast a year WITH FITZGERALD in the lineup to see if he can make any magic happen! While I don't disagree with you, for the most part, Whisenhunt doesn't owe Leinart anything.  He didn't draft him.  He has no ties to him.  It's Whisenhunt's choice whether he wants him to play or not.

Oh, and I wouldn't go so far as to say that Leinart is talented enough to be a top 10 QB in this league.  He hasn't really proven ANYTHING to be put in that conversation.

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

I really like Leinart.  He has sufferd by Warner hanging around.  In the round, he should have asked to be traded long ago.  This has been unfair to him as a football player.  He really has yet to have an honest chance at running the team and earning the teams respect.  If the coaches are showing no confidence in him right now (and we already know Whisenhunt is not a very wise guy) they have shot his credibility. He has done what they asked.   In my mind, the Cardinals are making a HUGE mistake. They risk their season. If they had paced their confidence in Leinart without hesitation, his confidence would be way up.   The Cards have one of the easiest schedules in the NFL.   They gained more by supporting Leinart completely thru the first few gamesof the season.  With Anderson as the #2, they were in teh perfect psosiotn to yank Leinart if he fails.   Anderson is straky and not going to be "the GUY" for very long.   This is a risk the Cardinals committed to last year and needed to follow thru a few games of the season.  A coaches doubts should be the coaches doubts.   This is really poor leadership by Whisenhunt.

They almost have to cut him if they aren't going to start him.  Which may be best for Leinart.  In fact, the sooner the better.   But it is grossly fair to a superb QB that needs to have a chance.

Shame on you Cards.   Play yours and then make your changes if required.    You are throwing out babies and bathwater.
