Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

Posted on: August 30, 2010 8:38 pm
Matt Leinart wonders why he's not the starter in Arizona, but he has bigger concerns. He might not make the team.

I'm serious. People in and around the Cardinals' ballclub tell me that the former No. 1 pick might be cut, not because he hasn't completed a high percentage of passes -- because he has -- but because the players there have no faith in the guy and don't believe they can win with him.

If that is in fact the case, it's over. He not only won't make it as the team's starter; he won't make it, period.

Leinart complained that he's outplayed Derek Anderson, and he has -- if you're talking pure numbers. Leinart completed 82.6 percent of his passes this summer to Anderson's 58.5 and has a higher passer rating (110.3 to 70.3). But several players on the Cardinals say they have more confidence in Anderson than Leinart, who sat behind Kurt Warner the past two seasons. So that pushes him to the backup spot, but then the Cards have a couple of rookies --  Max Hall and John Skelton -- who look good enough to keep.

Except for one thing: If one is released he almost surely is claimed.

That brings us back to Leinart, and why the Cards would go into a season with two rookies as backups. The reason, people close to the Cards say, is that he might not be a positive influence in the No. 2 spot and might hold Hall and/or Skelton back. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has said the decision will be based on more than just stats, with the head coach citing "chemistry" as a key component, and that's where Leinart comes up short. Morever, there's a feeling that the Cards have given the guy plenty of time to prove he can make it at this level and are so frustrated that he isn't farther along they're contemplating the improbable.

I'm not saying Leinart gets cut, but I am saying it's a possibility. Matt Leinart should be worried -- about a lot more than just the starter's job.

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

Cutting him is ridiculous seeing that he is more talented then about 8-10 current starting QBs, and who knows how much more he could improve if given the reigns of the team?

Ridiculous article!

Maybe. But one thing that matter is MONEY....  Leinart signed a 6 year deal just before the 2006 season for 50.8 million dollars with 14 million dollars guaranteed.  By my calculations Arizona has already paid him about 35 million dollars so the guaranteed portion of his contract was honored long ago.

To keep him they have to pay him 2.485 million this year, not bad right? I agree that if that was all I wouldn't cut him quite yet.  But let me tell you where it gets really ugly... 2011.   His salary and roster bonus for 2011 adds up to about 13 million dollars.   There is NO WAY Arizona will pay that guy 13 million to play in 2011, especially if there is a new CBA in place with a salary cap.  So why even bother keeping him this year then?

If their intentions are to dump him after this season anyway, might as well dump him now and let another qb develop.  Nobody will trade anything for him even if he does ok during the season because nobody wants to pick up 13 million dollars in 2011.  Arizona is stuck.... they can't do much about this and I can't believe Leinart is acting like he doesn't know why this is happening.

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

Leinarts done in this league...will never be a starter.  Looks awful

if he has played awful then what do you think about the guy who has played worse than he has taking over?  I watched the NFL Network last night and they said there are still a ton of people out there who think Matt can play in the NFL and ESPN the Magazine had an article last year saying that for the past few off seasons the Cards have had 6 to 10 teams try to trade for Leinart.  You stated your opinion which is not a fact.

Matt has four incomplete passes that doesn't really sound like he is missing so much that is is a problem.  Against the Bears he went 9-10 passing and what is so wrong with making shorter passes that don't create turnovers and scores touchdowns?  I am fairly certain Joe Montanta and Jerry Rice excelled in that type of system.  Besides that it isn't a secret that Whiz doesn't show the playbook during preseason there is a reason up until this year that the Cards have been 3-13 in preason under Whiz.  Last year Matt had a 300 yard passing game during preseason and everyone thought Warner was too old and couldn't hack it.

YOU sir have not watched any of preseason..this guy sucks to put it bluntly. He misses wide open guys running deep cause he has no arm and accuracy deep(hence the high completion percentage)>He dumps off cause he has no confidence in his arm for deep throws.I have faith that a coach who sees him everyday knows more about his leadership qualities than you or I.He's a born back-up....face it and move on cause the team will.btw..did you watch any of his post game interviews?..I did and this guy has no clue what it takes to be a pro....good riddance.

Why is everyone bashing Judge for the article? All he is saying here is the following:
People in and around the ' ballclub tell me that the former No. 1 pick might be cut Hate the message, don't hate the messenger!

Go ahead and release the guy who has a 110 preseason QB rating and no picks in favor of a guy who has a 70 preseason QB rating and two picks this preseason.  You know a certain Seattle Seahawk is watching the distress in the desert and thinking this is like Christmas Eve.  Said certain Seattle Seahawk could get a QB who has a decent QB rating, who has mastered his playbook better than any other QB on the planet and who has spent five years learning the offense and of a division rival.  He would get Matt's knowledge of the Cards offense, player weaknesses and the hand signals as a defense guy said Seattle Seahawk couldn't have asked for this to play out any better if he plotted it himself.

Hold On A Second

I can totally see both sides of this story.  Leinart is many things, but has he really had any time to prove anything?  You cant prove anything backing up a hall of famer, he only played in mop up duty.  What he has shown has not been promising though.  The alternative is a guy who couldn't even start for the CLEVELAND BROWNS!!!!  Think about that for a moment.  He had one good year, a contract year, then couldnt get on the field for one of the worst teams ever assembled.  The Cards really have nothing to lose by giving Leinart a chance to start and win over his teammates.  Nothing brings a locker room closer than winning.

Any chance he gets picked up by Seattle and reunited with Carrol?  It might be nice to have some more "competition" at that spot.  :)
