Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

Posted on: August 30, 2010 8:38 pm

Matt Leinart wonders why he's not the starter in Arizona, but he has bigger concerns. He might not make the team.

I'm serious. People in and around the Cardinals' ballclub tell me that the former No. 1 pick might be cut, not because he hasn't completed a high percentage of passes -- because he has -- but because the players there have no faith in the guy and don't believe they can win with him.

If that is in fact the case, it's over. He not only won't make it as the team's starter; he won't make it, period.

Leinart complained that he's outplayed Derek Anderson, and he has -- if you're talking pure numbers. Leinart completed 82.6 percent of his passes this summer to Anderson's 58.5 and has a higher passer rating (110.3 to 70.3). But several players on the Cardinals say they have more confidence in Anderson than Leinart, who sat behind Kurt Warner the past two seasons. So that pushes him to the backup spot, but then the Cards have a couple of rookies --  Max Hall and John Skelton -- who look good enough to keep.

Except for one thing: If one is released he almost surely is claimed.

That brings us back to Leinart, and why the Cards would go into a season with two rookies as backups. The reason, people close to the Cards say, is that he might not be a positive influence in the No. 2 spot and might hold Hall and/or Skelton back. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has said the decision will be based on more than just stats, with the head coach citing "chemistry" as a key component, and that's where Leinart comes up short. Morever, there's a feeling that the Cards have given the guy plenty of time to prove he can make it at this level and are so frustrated that he isn't farther along they're contemplating the improbable.

I'm not saying Leinart gets cut, but I am saying it's a possibility. Matt Leinart should be worried -- about a lot more than just the starter's job.

Let them cut him the fools.  He will be picked up very fast.  Hopefully by the Buffalo Bills.

Leinart should be concerned ... about getting cut

As a Browns fan and one that was not ready to thrw DA out like yesterdays garbage. I sort of felt that Da would start in AZ over Leinert. Not so much because of what anderson can do but how bad leinart has been!! i am reading some excuses for leinart and it sounds like here in cleveland when people wew making excuses for Quinn. When the reality is that in thier times as starters neither have shown anything!!!

DA is a decent QB. he has issues with interceptions and touch passes but he is a compettitor and has one of the best releases and arm strength in football. With DA there is always potential for big things. but also the pic is always always on the table!!

I enjoyed watching him that cannon arm is exciting. His fiery compettitiveness can lead to lots of wins but the pics and lak of touch will always haunt him!!!

As a 49ers fan put either one in at QB and we still have the best team in our division. Does Leinart deserve a shot after sitting and watching Kurt Warner? Probably he does but you are not going to get that starter job without putting in the work! SHould he have been a better student of the game, yes,it's been well publicized how he hasn't done the work needed but how many other young players didn't and don't do what they need to but after a few years they get it and blossom into great pros. The best thing for him now would be to except whatever fate the Cards hand him and run with it, if he is the starter he better earn the trust of the coaches and players but if he gets cut the next team that picks him up may well get a player very motivated and maybe that is what this guy is lacking.
I also would like to see this list of QB's that he is better than right now, in my mind it's very short list.

Lienart needs to wake up stop coasting on his college career and make it as a pro or he could be on the list of NFL busts!

I completely agree!  Nice response to this ridiculous article.  This is typical crap reporters put in the media to stir up controversey raise eye brows in the name of ratings while avoiding truth of the situation and sacraficing the lively hood of a quality player.

Well as far as I'm concerned Whisenhunt hasen't proved himself to me .... Lucky to have Kurt Warner to gravey train off of, lets see how he coaches now... That team had 1 good year, if I'm Leinart I'd hope to be on another team I'd say cut me Mick I mean Ken...

He won't get cut (Duh)! There is no way that they go into the season with a rookie backup. I do believe that Anderson is better at reading defenses and is more quick. He will most likely get traded for another backup like Brady Quinn. This would be good for both him and Arizona. The fans their are fed up with him and when the fans hate you (You are out)! Unlike J. Russell he will get a chance with another team. Best of luck to Matt.

Leinart is a bum.  He has spent more time trying to be a social elite, then an NFL starting QB.  Warner was an excuse for why Leinart became a backup and not able to live up to his 1 draft pick status.  Thimk of it this way, put him on any other NFL team and he is almost certain to only become a 3rd string QB.  Why would the Cardinals start a guy that would be a 3rd stringer on other teams.  If Leinart had so m uch upside, then why didn't anyone go after him the last 2 years when he became a backup?  There were plenty of teams in need for a quarterback.  Anderson has proven himself to be able to play at the NFL starting QB level, and should be the one given the chance to play with a great offense, as oppose to what he had to work with in Cleveland.  I have to agree that Leinart may be cut by next season if Anderson and Hall stay healthy.  Let's be honest about USC QBs, most look great at USC, but few make it to an equal level in the NFL.

I didn't realize that you spent so much time in the Packers locker room back in those days to know exactly how they felt on a daily basis.  You're a lucky guy. Any other insights you can offer me Raider since you know the ins and outs of locker rooms so well.

Why cut him when you could probably trade him for someone decent at another position? Seattle ? Pete Carroll ?
