Oakland pulls plug on Cable

You know how people used to excuse Manny Ramirez's excesses by saying, "That's Manny being Manny?" Well, that's kind of how I see the Tom Cable firing. It's the Raiders being the Raiders, and there's not much more you can say about it.

Firing him after last season made more sense than firing him now. I mean, Cable demonstrated this year that he had something that recent Raiders' head coaches do not -- namely, a clue -- and that he could make the club a factor again. So he beat every team in the AFC West, then beat them again, and hung the only home loss on Kansas City in the season finale.

That should have earned him a parade at Jack London Square. Instead, it got him fired.

Just when it looks as if Oakland has things figured out, it goes out and does something like this. It's not shocking. It's not perplexing. It's not inconceivable. It's the Raiders being the Raiders. Nothing more. No one can expect or explain a lot of what happens in Oakland, and, just a hunch, but you think it has something to do with Al Davis?

All of those with their hands raised go to the head of the class.

Rumors persist that the Raiders will hire offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as their next head coach, and that makes sense ... which, of course, means they probably won't. I wouldn't be surprised if former Giants' coach Jim Fassel was in the mix (his son currently works with the team) or that former Minnesota and Arizona head coach Denny Green gets a sniff.

Me? I hope the Raiders do what they should have done years ago and give two-time Grey Cup winner Marc Trestman -- a former Oakland assistant -- an opportunity to interview for the job. He worked with Davis. He admires the guy. And he called the plays for that 2002 Oakland team that went to the Super Bowl. Oh, yeah, he's also a successful head coach, going to the Grey Cup in each of his three years with Montreal and winning it the past two seasons.

Nobody will give Trestman a shot in this country, with the University of Miami passing on him as its head coach, which means he's the ideal candidate for Oakland. And the reason: Yep, it's the Raiders being the Raiders.

Tom Cable did a terrific job with them. He returned respectability to the Raiders and made them matter again. For the first time in years the Raiders were an opponent that deserved your attention, which means for the first time in years they were relevant -- and hallelujah. It's about time. I don't know why he was canned, but I know someone who does. And he's not talking.

So my explanation: See Manny Ramirez.

Schottenheimer lost in the first round too, at home.  AJ Smith has made some glaring errors but he has put a strong product on the field  for the most part.  When you beat Indy twice in the play-offs during Manning's prime, and lose twice to Brady (once barely) and once to Rothliesberger you can't complain t
oo much.  It reminds me of the Holmgren Seahawks, alwaysn something to complain about ignoring the div championships.

Don't you just love this quote from the article:"Cable demonstrated this year that he had something that recent Raiders' head coaches do not -- namely, a clue -- and that he could make the club a factor again. So he beat every team in the AFC West, then beat them again, and hung the only home loss on Kansas City in the season finale."
Chargers head coach Norv Turner is one of the former Raiders head coaches who is referred to as not having a clue. But then everyone in the world knew this except The Lord of No Rings A.J. Smith.

Time For Al To Go The Farm

That's it!!!! Time for Al to retire. I haven't been able to hate the Raiders properly in years and I'm really jonesin'!!!  It was like this when the Cowgirls sucked, too. C'mon! There's gotta be a way to put this guy out to pasture. He's single-handedly ruining this football team. What an egomaniacal doosh.

Al? is that you? The Raiders ran the ball as well as anyone in the league, without any receiving threats. Thats pretty good O- line play. Players either play for the coach or they don't.   Cable had these guys playing tough football. Above their abilities. Great teamwork play on special teams and Defense. That defense is pretty weak  yet managed some big plays this year.  This years team played with more fire than any team since Gruden!   THATS WHY!

This is why Oakland can't sellout without giving away 20,000 tix. SILVER AND BLACKOUTS BABY!!!!!!   One step up , and two steps back.  Tom Cable did a great job bring respect back. All we can see, is that the players played hard.   That seems impossible with MR. BURNS, errr,  old man Davis still sucking air.

Spanos and Co. are disfunctional, but when you have the talent you don't hire a project coach, you hire a proven one.  Oakland groomed their own, and instead of giving him a chance ala Cowher or Fisher, they will probably get a college coach or unproven coordinator.  If I were an Oakland fan I would have been psyched about the progress.  Instead it seems you all think somehow things will get better with massive change every year or so.  You're as collectively senile as your owner.

At least this guy has balls, unlike Dean Spanos! "What do I just pull the plug, and start all over?" Uh yeah you gave Norv 4 years and didnt bring you squat, time to move on dumb ass!
