Memo to Newton: Get another line

Posted on: February 22, 2011 10:41 pm

So Cam Newton wants to be "an entertainer" and "icon." Swell. Maybe he should just worry about being a quarterback.

I swear, someone should give Newton advice he's not getting these days. To say what he said on the eve of the NFL combine is, well, frankly, stupid. He must convince clubs that he can be the quarterback in the pros that he was at Auburn, that he can win as he did in Auburn and that he is not the next JaMarcus Russell or Vince Young waiting to happen.

He's going to need all weekend.

Look, I want a quarterback who wants to win. Period. I don't need someone who wants to be an icon. Tom Brady didn't enter the league looking to be an entertainer or an icon. He wanted to be a starting quarterback. Period. Same goes for Peyton Manning. I don't remember Aaron Rodgers saying anything about anything other than he wanted to go where he would play.

You want to entertain? Go into show business or get your own reality TV show. You want to win? Play football and make your team respectable.

That's all I want out of my next quarterback. When I hear something like this out of a high draft pick it makes me wonder if the guy knows what it takes to play at the next level or if he has the makeup to become the leader of his next football team. Basically, it makes me wonder just how mature he is.

I guess we just found out. Score one red flag for Cam.

Memo to Newton: Get another line

It has nothing to do about race, it has to do with the ability to learn and play in a pro style offense where you don't run.  Comparison for Newton has, and will continue to be made with the following QB's:  Pat White, Tebow, Russell, Young, Alex Smith, Troy Smith, etc.  If you include good QB's of that style:  Cunningham, Vick (in Philly when he learned to throw), Steve Young, Elway, etc.

The problem with all of this is that Russell and Young were highly rated flops with similar throwing issues (they suck), the likes of Ryan Leaf.  The style of these QB's separate them.  A lot of Newton's successful throw's were to wide open receivers because DB's broke coverage when he scrambled.  He won't have the same success in the pros like this (just like young and russell) when you don't work on your knowledge of the game and throwing ability.  He has shown poor judgement, intelligence (news and history on the guy proove that) and he isn't an accurate thrower, or good decision maker on the field or in real life.

Try to be educated before you post a stupid comment and realize the issue is with his character (obvious) and the lack of pro style experience.  Running QB's don't survive very long in the NFL, even vick who is hard to get your hands on doesn't fair well.  the second philly played a team that had DB's to cover his receivers and a pass rush he had problems.  Newton isn't anywhere near the ability of Vick scrambling or throwing.  I'll let you read between the lines.

Memo to Newton: Get another line

Why is it always about race for quarterbacks?  Why aren't white people outraged by the lack of white running backs and punt returners in the league?  It's okay to say the white running back just can't run fast enough and doesn't have what it takes, but it's not okay to say the black quarterback can't process the game fast enough and just doesn't have what it takes.  That looks kind of like reverse racism to me.  That never gets brought up though.  It is 2011 people, not 1960.  Quit whining about it and trying to stir up controversy.  Yes Newton is a great athlete.  Is he smart enough to run a pro style offense?  We don't know that yet, but in my opinion, no.  That isn't racism.  That is me seeing a guy who played incredible football last year by being more physically gifted than anyone else on the field.  He didn't have to think much to be dominant, but that won't cut it in the pros.

Memo to Judge: Get a Life

Hey Judge, Cam Newton is 21 years old. He is going to say foolish things, but nothing he has said or done has warranted a red flag. So Newton knows he is good and doesnt shy away from it what is wrong with that?

Just because he didnt do what Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning did, doesnt mean anything. Two years ago nobody would have given a rats ass what Aaron Rodgers does. Now he is the best thing since sliced bread. Newton should not have to live up to someone else's expectations of him. He is a great player and obvious leader, but because he is not humble enough for some sportwriter teams should pass on him.

Many posters on this board say that minorites are always complaining and race is not an issue. If its not an issue why are Russell and Young always mentioned in conjuction with Newton. They have very little in common with the exception of their race. First of all you cant be a bust with a winning record. Young is 30-17 during his tenure with the Titans. Secondly if you are talking about qbs with red flags why are you focusing on Newton based on something he said? Ryan Mallett may have a serious drug problem and you are complaining because Newton wants to have a career that allows him to transcend football. What a joke. Whether we want to admit it or not, there is a double standard when it comes to evaluating quarterbacks of color. Now the NFL has made tremendous strides and is no longer jettisoning promising black qbs to Canada to prove themselves. That being said they still have to jump through hoops. Troy Smith won a Heisman and was written off before he ever took a snap. If Judge wants to be an objective reporter give us a concrete reason why Newton is a bust waiting to happen. Tell us his decision making isnt good, his accuracy is horrible, he slapped a girl, whatever it is, it has to be better than he is looking to be an entertainer. Because what it sounds like to me is that Judge is hating just because and if that is the case than perhaps he should be relieved of his duty.

Memo to Newton: Get another line

LOL I love people can claim to be whatever they want on a message board.  "I work for an organization that owns four professional teams in the US and one in Europe...LOL...This guy is probably a secretary or like the mail clerk, LOL.

In a related story, I am Santa Claus, no, really, I am.   I love messge boards, people can be whoever they want.  I'm Tiger Woods, or maybe Donald Trump.   I have found when people go out of their way to say I work in x, they are usually full of crap.

Memo to Newton: Get another line

Why not the next Alex Smith? Ryan Leaf?

Go ahead and say what you mean, The next failed BLACK QB. Racist ass.

Probably because VY and Russell were the two most previous failed QB's where as Ryan Leaf is old hack and Alex Smith was drafted a few years prior.  But, since you like to delve really deep into nothing, you can also look at it another way too.  Out of the past 3 busts, Alex Smith is still in the league, where is Russell and VY?  Don't worry, Mallet gets torn to pieces for his throwing and he hasnt' even said anything yet.

FYI, if you look through some articles here, you will see that Leafs name was put in context with Newton as well.

Memo to Newton: Get another line

It seems I remember Dion Sanders being the king of trash talking before he got drafted.  It did not hurt him and he ended up being one of the best defensive backs ever.  (If he could have tackled, he would have been the best).  However, he was not a QB and I can not help but think Newton just slid at least a few spots in the draft.  If I am the Buffalo Bills, and had seriously been thinking about taking him at 3, I may have just taken a pass.
