Memo to Newton: Get another line

Posted on: February 22, 2011 10:41 pm

So Cam Newton wants to be "an entertainer" and "icon." Swell. Maybe he should just worry about being a quarterback.

I swear, someone should give Newton advice he's not getting these days. To say what he said on the eve of the NFL combine is, well, frankly, stupid. He must convince clubs that he can be the quarterback in the pros that he was at Auburn, that he can win as he did in Auburn and that he is not the next JaMarcus Russell or Vince Young waiting to happen.

He's going to need all weekend.

Look, I want a quarterback who wants to win. Period. I don't need someone who wants to be an icon. Tom Brady didn't enter the league looking to be an entertainer or an icon. He wanted to be a starting quarterback. Period. Same goes for Peyton Manning. I don't remember Aaron Rodgers saying anything about anything other than he wanted to go where he would play.

You want to entertain? Go into show business or get your own reality TV show. You want to win? Play football and make your team respectable.

That's all I want out of my next quarterback. When I hear something like this out of a high draft pick it makes me wonder if the guy knows what it takes to play at the next level or if he has the makeup to become the leader of his next football team. Basically, it makes me wonder just how mature he is.

I guess we just found out. Score one red flag for Cam.

I would agree it has a lot to do with race. You have more black athletes that tend to let their mouth do their talking instead of their play. If Newton had been in the league and proven himself I would not have a problem with it. But to hear this kind of garbage coming from him only makes me want to watch him get slammed to the ground by someone who is more interested in the team being successful rather than the individual.

Yeah Dawg!  Wait is Blake Griffin white?  I guess it doesn't matter is he was orange.  Here is a superstar already in the league who is as humble as grandma's pie even after proving his skills belong (which Cambodia Newton has yet to do).

Wrong! He is comparing Newton to those guys because they won games with athleticsm and maybe not so much NFL type skills. And also to the fact that they both moved up in their respective draft classes after good workouts. Neither Smith or Leaf won anything in college. Smith because he was at Utah, but no Natl Championships for either like Young or Russell.

First off, he never said anything about any of what you just said in his article. The whole article is about Cam Newtons Statements.

Second off, Alex Smith (career 631 rush yrds, 10 rush TD's) won because of his athleticism, No so much Russel ( career 81 rsh yrds, 4 rush td's). Alex Smith did all that in 1 year, Jamarcus got those numbers in 3 yrs.

Third, how can he compare Newtons workout to anybody's when he hasnt done it yet? Not the combine anyways.

fourth, Russell Never won a Natl. Championship, unless you want to count his freshman yr in which he Red-Shirted.

Like i said, there is only one thing they all share in common.

It's always about race.  It's clearly about race.  Why hide behind the veil?  Why don't they pick on the "white" superstar when he says this sort of thing?  Because first off, there aren't many "white superstars" and secondly, if there is one, he either has been coached on what to say to the media or simply thinks before he spouts off.

So maybe all you idiots would be happy if Cam lied and said all he would do is eat, sleep and dream football like every other player who lies when he says that right? You know how many potential NFL players will tell that lie at the combine? I'm guessing almost all of them.

Being in the NFL is a job people, it doesn't define who you are. NFL players "jobs" involve far less than 40 hours of work a week. They work far less than the average person works. So what are players supposed to do with the rest of their time?? It's called having a life people.

So I can appreciate the honesty of what Cam says, regardless of how outraged the Dudley Do Right's of the world get.

Or you can believe the players who lie and say that all they do is eat, sleep and dream football. Don't get me wrong, I know there are a few players that do this, but they are BY FAR the minority in the league and not the majority.

Give it a rest and stop being outraged by irrelevant stuff.

You're an idiot. So is Cam Newton for tweeting that. it's not about race. Ridiculous...

So what are the common grounds between what Cam said, to VY and JaMarcus? Did either of them say anything like that? No.
There is only one thing all three have in common. No i dont think he is racist, but he clearly holds Cam closer to Russel and VY than he does Alex Smith.
