Knee injury to cause Bowers to postpone Pro Day?

A scout I trust told me that a knee injury will cause Clemson defensive lineman Da'Quan Bowers to sit out the school's Pro Day Thursday and that he has re-scheduled his NFL workout for early April. Bowers is considered the top pass rusher in this year's draft and an almost certain top five choice -- provided, of course, he checks out OK.

But that's where our story gets interesting. This same scout also told me he heard that Bowers was flagged by a physician at the NFL scouting combine for a knee that had the doctor concerned -- something that an AFC coach later confirmed and something that almost certainly will be re-examined.

Bowers hurt his knee during the season and played through the injury, waiting until the season was over to undergo surgery.

"It hurt a little bit," he said at the combine, "but not enough for me to stop playing."

It is unclear if the knee injury is related to what may or may not happen at Clemson Thursday, but it did prevent Bowers from working out at the combine because, as he said then, "I want the same amount of time that everybody else has to train and prepare for the combine." He also said he was "100 percent" and that he would do all his workouts on Clemson's Pro Day.

"I don't know if he'll be working out (Thursday) or not," said an AFC general manager, "but I do know the knee's a concern. It's something that a lot of guys were talking about (Wednesday). But you're always going to get stuff like that at this time of year. Some of it is real, and some of it is imagined. But a 'medical' is pretty easy to clear up."

Bowers' agent was unavailable for comment. His voice mail was full, and I didn't get a response to an e-mail. However, he did send out an e-mail the other day saying that Bowers would not participate in Thursday's Pro Day.
