Memo to league: Scratch HOF game

The NFL has been saying that it's not sure it will stage the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 7. So be sure: Cancel it.

Yeah, I know, it looks as if there's a deal coming shortly and that owners may vote on ratifying it July 21, but there's a lot that must happen before we get teams back in camp. Like the players signing off on a new agreement. And free agents signing. And signings of your own free agents. And college draft picks. And undrafted players.

I don't waver from my best guess of a month ago, which was that training camps begin on or about Aug. 1. So how do you go from an entire offseason where players weren't in your building to less than a week of camp and then a football game? Answer: You don't. Spare everyone the trouble, and deep-sixl the game.

Plus, there's this: Talk to any coach who assumes a fifth preseason game. He loathes it. Wishes he never had it. So do him a favor. Just scratch the game and move on. As I said, I don't know how you go from a four-month lockout to a football game after less than a week of practice. So don't.

Memo to league: Scratch HOF game

You don't have to cancel the game you just handle it like a controlled scrimmage or the pro bowl game. No blitzing only play a cover 2 defense with 4 man rush . Vanilla based offense with no trick or gadget plays no onside kicks and no overtime. It is still football with live tackling but make it as safe as possible. this is not the super bowl it doesn't have to be a work of art but if its played i bet it gets higher tv ratings than your average HOF game.

Memo to league: Scratch HOF game

I agree with longbomb and others but pushing the HOF game back is probably not practical.

Lots of people from all over go to the HOF game.  It probably is not practical for them to be able to change their plans and flights and hotel reservations.  It is a shame because as stated the HOF game does bring in a significant amount of revenue for the local economy.

What a shame this is for the economy in Canton.

For a city like Canton, Ohio this is a big issue. You all make it sound like it's a 'nothing game' when in fact, it's big revenue and a big issue for a city like Canton. The millions of dollars this generates for the city carries it through to the following year. Good or bad, right or wrong....it is what it is. Without the revenue stream from this one game, the city and the services it provides the residents could be in jeopardy. I couldn't imagine not having enough money to plow the streets come winter in Northeast, Ohio. So, my opinion is for this game to take place, no matter when.

Can they scratch putting Deion Sanders in the HOF too?  That guy doesn't deserve to get in for just being a cover guy, plus there are so many more deserving people that should get in before he does.

Memo to league: Scratch HOF game

Who cares about the HOF game? Its a nothing game in a nothing place and its not like its competitive. Its a patsy scrimmage. I don't watch it, I don't care who plays in it, and I don't see the need for a useless game. Scratch it for sure and forever.

The HOF game doesn't mean anything so why cancel it? Ask those vendors if they don't want the extra bucks. I don't remember a single HOF game that any players got injured or even come close to even getting tackled, lol. Quit making it sound as if signing off new agreements, free agency signings, college draft picks and so on has anything to do with the fans, that's the league and teams problems to get it done. It's their problems for the lockout in the first place so why the fans has to once again suffer for their decisions? Once they say the season is on, than it's ON !!!!
