Movement in Umenyiora stalemate

So Osi Umenyiora has been given permission to seek a trade from the New York Giants. That doesn't mean one will happen. It means the Giants have taken the first step to eliminate a distraction.

Reports indicate the Giants want a first-round draft pick in return, and that's going to be tough. Remember, he wants a new contract, too. So you'd sacrifice a first-rounder and mucho bucks for him, which will shrink the field of suitors. But there should be people at least interested, and that is a step forward.

Make no mistake, Umenyiora wants out now. He is an unhappy camper who believes general manager Jerry Reese didn't follow through on a promise he allegedly made in 2008. In a sworn affadavit that was part of the Tom Brady lawsuit vs. the NFL, Umenyiora said that Reese promised him a new contract or a trade if he had two productive years.

Umenyiora believes he lived up to his part of the deal. He emphatically believes the Giants have now, staying out one day of camp to demonstrate it. Now, at least, there's movement, with the defensive end allowed to seek a potential suitor ... mostly, I believe, to calm down Umenyiora.

He has two years left on his contract, and this is the Giants' way of saying he won't be getting a new deal. So maybe he'll get a new home. That would make Umenyiora happy. People close to him swore that he would never play another down for the Giants. Maybe they're right.

I can see why those who post below me aren't GM's.  You trade this bum and you take the best offer and you keep him out of your division, as far as a trade to the Jets, if they have the best offer let them deal with the headache, he and Plaxico can bothe show up late to team meetings together.

some u guys are so dumb its not even funny...really think osi would ever be in a jet/cowboy/redskin uniform? LOL...giants would never do this it would be a slap in the face to them...osi is my favorite player(i even named my dog after this jerkoff) but now hes just upsetting me...ur in a great situation with the giants why do you want out? your hurting the rest of your teammates with this nonsense especially when your such close "friends" with certain guys here...u gave a great year and an adverage one so where is your leverage? play a fantastic season now i guarentee the giants pay you next season we love having all these pass rushers its whats making the giants the giants dont ruin it by trading this guy

I am a hugh Giants fan but Osi is showing he is no better then the rest of the GREEDY pro athletes. Get your head on right and play football. You have 2 yrs remaining on you current contract. Live up to what you signed.

What is the deal here? If a promise was made then follow through with it. It was a stupid thing to make a promise in the first place and it is even more stupid to back out on a promise made. Now the Giants are in the position that they probably have to trade him or step up big time and pay him. A first round pick is stupid again and a ploy on the Giants part. Make a trade for a piece to help fill a hole and a lower draft pick and let another team deal with contract talks. Just avoiding the situation however and making him play on the Giants this year will simply poison the chemistry on the team. Looks like this entire situation isn't being handled right and says to me the management are a bunch of idiots.

The Patriots definately have the draft pick stockpile to put together a package for Osi, but it is doubtful that Bill would part with a 1st or 2nd rounder for a guy almost 30.  Maybe a 3rd round in 2012 and a conditional 3rd/4th round in 2013, depending on production.
