Umenyiora suitors balk at Giants' demands

Not surprisingly, there are no new developments in the Osi Umenyiora situation. The Giants granted the defensive end permission to seek a deal, but they're asking for a first-round draft pick in return -- something that's not likely to happen. And that's not just me talking. It's Umenyiora's agent, Tony Agnone.

"We'll continue to pursue a trade," he said Tuesday morning, "but at that high level I find it a rather dubious situation."

I'll second that.

Agnone is fielding calls from teams, and there are a lot of them. He's talking to interested GMs, and there are a lot of them. But not at the price the Giants are demanding. A second-rounder? Maybe. But, remember, Umenyiora wants a new contract, too. So you'd have to sacrifice a first-rounder and a lot of money to acquire him.

Clubs are willing to pay the money. They're not willing to mortgage a first-rounder, especially under terms of the new agreement that only increase the value of a top pick. So where it appears the Giants are willing to trade Umenyiora, the terms are so high that a trade doesn't seem likely.

That leaves Umenyiora sitting still, so steamed about what's going on he reportedly is dead set against playing another down for the Giants. But Agnone had plans to meet with him Tuesday morning to discuss the next move ... if, in fact, there is a move.

All I know is that nothing is happening on the Umenyiora front ... from either end. And maybe that's a good thing. Emotions need to settle down.

So if they cut him and someone signs him and pays him a ton of money, they'll probably get a better pick than by trading him, so they're stupid.
Your lesson you attempted to give was incorrect. If they cut him he is not their free agent they receive no compensation.

If no team is willing to pay a first rounder for osi, then he is obviously not worh what he asking to be paid. You would think that one of the top defensive ends in the league would be worth a first rounder, no brainer, right?

Umenyiora suitors balk at Giants' demands

"Osi Umenyiora and Carson Palmer should find a way to spit in their teams faces, they really should..  No matter how you feel about either it is a bit suspect almost."

They both signed contracts..plain & simple.  Nobody forced Umenyiora to sign his last contract.  Why should the Giants have to give him a pay raise now, when they have a deal with him that is good for 2 more years.  These guys have a good year and want to renegotiate their contracts, and sign an Albert Haynesworth type deal where the get 50 Million+ guaranteed.  I hope the Giants force him to play out the remaining years of his contract, just like he agreed to do when he signed the contract.  If he does not like it, he can take the Carson Palmer approach and retire, but to demand to be traded just because he feels like he deserves more money is ridiculous.  Maybe the GM promised him more money...maybe he didn't we will never know the truth about that one, what we do know is that he signed a contract, and it's still good for two more seasons.

No. Cutting him helps Osi out a lot but although I don't know the exact rule I doubt very much the team signing him gives up a 1st or 2nd round pick for him regardless of how much the contract is for.   If they were going to cut him, why not cut him after the 08 season where he missed the entire season? They owed very little of that 15 million at that time.  They could have just cut him and I promise you nobody out there would have been overpaying for him.  If the Giants wanted to be really mean they would have cut him after the 09 season, his first season back after the injury.  His stats that year were barely half as good as the last year he played before he missed a season.  There wouldn't have been one NFL team willing to sign him to a crazy contract and certainly not the money he was still guaranteed in New York.

This is another case where a team stuck with a player after he got hurt that didn't have to do that.  Their reward?  A contract extension demand.... it's a joke.

Red Wings, just a little lesson on how UFA works, at least under the old rules and I'm sure it's probably the same now, If someone signs your UFA, depending on how much money you pay him, you are awarded a compensatory pick at the end of whatever round the money is slotted into, maybe you've seen them at the end of every round. Just letting you know. So if they cut him and someone signs him and pays him a ton of money, they'll probably get a better pick than by trading him, so they're stupid.
