Why would Manning return anyway?

Posted on: September 26, 2011 10:43 am
The more I hear about Peyton Manning the more I'm convinced he won't play this season.

Colts' owner Jim Irsay on Monday said there's an "outside" chance Manning returns in December, and in football-speak that usually means no way on God's green earth.

Besides, what's the use? By then the season will be flushed, and the Colts jockeying for draft position. So why put Manning back on the field? There's no reason.

There is, however, reason to play Curtis Painter. You might as well find out now if there's something there. If Painter demonstrates he can play ... if he demonstrates he can win ... maybe quarterback is not the pressing concern it would seem to be. But you'll never find out playing Kerry Collins.

Collins is a one-year rental, anyway. Painter might have upside, but you never know unless you play him. So play him. What do you have to lose? Another game? Big deal. The Colts are going to lose a lot of games anyway. So start planning for next season by playing Painter this season.

Why would Manning return anyway?

Not like Colts fans wanted to see a good game of football from their home team this season anyway, right? I get that there isn't much reason in the way of season standing to play Manning, but what about ticket sales? Do you really think there's no benefit to putting some fans in the stands?

Why would Manning return anyway?

Why start Manning in December when the Colt's will probably be out of it?The guy just had a neck operation; Why risk further injury.I think Irsay said that to give hope to the Colt fans, but I don't think he realizes the fans are not stupid & that a Peyton Manning only comes around once..All Irsay cares about is the bottom line.He want's a full stadium so he can make his money on 8$ beers & 4$ hotdogs.

If by some stroke of luck the Colts are actually challenging for a play off spot in December - you've got to stick with what you've got - not bring back a QB who hasn;t practised, hasn't worked out and right not is looking pretty out of shape (understandable given his circumstance)

to even talk about playoffs - the colts haveto win at least 6 of the next 9 - if Collins/Painter can dop that - which seems impossible right now anyway- ride out the season with them

Why would Manning return anyway?

I agree 100% he has other intrest to think about now, the Colts are done for the year, he has Twins and a wife and so do I and I for one love playing with my kids I would hope he would want to do that and worry more about being able to do things with his family, and have a life after football, because next year the wrong hit could put him in a wheel chair if I was him I would retire he has a SB ring what else does need to do or prove.

Why would Manning return anyway?

I didn't say he should rush back. But if doctors declare him healthy at some point he should play. He is winding down his career and he might regret not doing anything all winter. If he is not 100% healthy then yes he should not play but I hate how calculating everything has become. All I am saying is he should not base his decision upon whether or not they are winning or have a chance for a playoff spot but rather should base his decision on whether he has the desire to play. Similar to NBA players going overseas to play or not. They should base their decision not on money but on a desire to play. They have enough money as it is.

Why would Manning return anyway?

Why would Manning return anyway?

I agree completely that there's no sense in rushing Peyton back and risking further injury.

I will, however, point out that we already know what we have in Painter.  We have a QB who couldn't consistently keep his starting spot in college.  He has the physical tools, but he becomes jumpy and erratic at the first sign of pressure, holds the ball too long, and stares down receivers.  He's had those same issues since his college days, and if he hasn't fixed them by now, after 3 years of coaching from Manning and the staff, I don't know that he can.  Essentially he's a strong-armed, borderline 2nd/3rd QB who may manage to put together a good game or two, but not a long stretch.

I'm pretty confident that they'll need to bring in Manning's successor via other means... whomever it will be isn't on the roster currently.  Either way, they will need to do it soon.

Why would Manning return anyway?

I want him to get better and play so he has another shot at a title.  Other than that, the Colts should just throw away this season because they're not going anywhere with Collins.  Whoever signed him should be fired, shot, or both.  Let Painter go through his growing pains now while you know it's not going to matter.  Use Colllins for mop up work because that's all he's good for.  Play your main players sparingly and save them from injury.  Play your backups and see what kind of talent they really have.  Treat this like a 16 game preseason camp and next year you'll be way ahead of the curve.

Why would Manning return anyway?

I couldn't agree with Clark more!  Why would Manning risk the rest of his career to try and win games for the Colts when they are 3-9?  I couldn't imagine someone playing so soon after neck surgery.  Manning might be the greatest ever!  It would be selfish to put him in to sell a few tickets and a bad choice for Manning to come back for the risk, even if he felt better.  Painter needs to have field experience and that will be worth much more.

Why would Manning return anyway?

I've been a Colts fan for 27 yrs. and I think Clark is absolutely right. There is no sense what so ever in Peyton coming back this yr. and risking further damage. I think the front office is handling this all wrong by not putting him on IR and just going with Painter. Were going to lose a ton of games this season anyway so its not like we'll be battling for playoff posistion. The only reason they won't IR him is so the "Manning Fans" will not lose hope and they can keep selling tickets.
