With Davis gone, what's next for Raiders?

Now the question: Who succeeds Al Davis?

That's been a lingering question for years, or at least while Davis was in declining health. The obvious successor is his son, Marc, but there has always been a feeling that he's not interested. He and Davis' wife are the direct heirs.

So who is it? There are strong personalities within the organization, with CEO Amy Trask the most noteworthy. She represents the Raiders at league meetings and is bright, forceful and, most important, a confidante of the former owner.

But people who should know tell me there never has been a frontrunner -- that is, other than Davis' son. What's more, they said they can't be certain that Davis' majority share in the Raiders would not be sold when he was gone.

Well, now he is. So somebody has the uneviable task of stepping into the position once occupied by the most powerful owner in the NFL and one of the most powerful figures in pro sports. Al Davis cared passionately about his club, and he cared passionately about winning. He molded the Raiders, and, like or not, he's responsible for who they are today.

And who they are is a decorated franchise that dominated the NFL landscape, then fell into nothingness, before resurrecting itself last season.

Now, it seems, it's headed in the right direction -- only now that direction must be steered by someone other than Al Davis. For the time being, there is a void -- one that will last for some time. You don't simply step in for an Al Davis and become what he was to the Oakland Raiders and the NFL.

You don't. You can't. You won't.

I just wonder where the Oakland Raiders go from here. Because Davis' health had been an issue for years, I would be surprised if he didn't leave detailed instructions how he wanted the franchise run. What I don't know is if the Davis family retains the controlling interest -- basically, if it keeps it or if it sells.

No matter what happens, there is an emptiness and a loss that will not be filled ... or overcome ... for some time.

So much for Freedom of Speech. This site ran out of IRAN?

1)  Please read the Constitution.  Freedom of Speech only applies to government suppressing the public's freedom of speech.  Here's a link if you wish educate yourself -

2)  As far as I know, CBS does not yet run the government.

3)  This is not a political website, so please take your tea bagger fantasies somewhere else.

4)  Al Davis was a pioneer.  He may not have been the best owner, especially in his later years, but he helped bring about what we now know as the NFL.  As an Orioles fan, this is a bummer becasue now Peter Angelos is the undisputed worst owner in professional sports.  R.I.P. Al

The young fans and idiots who post negative comments about Al Davis's passing really have no idea the impact he had on the game of pro football. He was true fan of the game in every aspect. From scout, coach, commish, owner and pioneer in the way the game is played. He refused to bow down to any man.He did it his way,the Raider way.I for one was proud to have Mr. Davis as our leader of the Raider Nation. There are to many dead beat owners in pro sports who refuse to spend money, take chances and who could care less if their team won or not.Mr. Davis was not one of those owners he poured his heart and soul into the raiders. He bled Silver and Black.Every fan should wish they had an owner who as deditcated to there team as he was.Your legacy will live on. JUST WIN BABY!!!

Who did the grammar check on this article.  They should be fired.  Second paragraph is a grammatical mess.  "That's been a lingering for years....."

What language is that?

Mark Cuban buy his share NOW haha. I know you can fix this mess and make a bunch of cash. Heck we been losing all these years, but the gangs keep us profitable buying gear. Really though I hope someone buys Davis's out. I know the son doesn't care and the wife will not know anything either. The best way is to get a younger owner, with deep pockets and the desire to win CUBAN!

AL did a lot for the Raiders but time passed him by. Maybe they can get on track now, seems things are getting better this year anyway.

Maybe now they'll actually have a chance to be a good team again.
