Just show him the money, Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills passed on quarterback in this year's draft because they said they had a conviction in Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now, they're proving it.

Reports indicate the Fitzpatrick is on the verge of a six-year, $59 million deal that will net him $24 million in guaranteed money and $33 million in the first three years. I'd say that's proof of their conviction. Apparently, the Bills believe Fitzpatrick is the guy to lead them to the playoffs, and they demonstrated it by making him a wealthy man.

I just wonder why they were in such a rush. I mean, the guy has been a backup most of his career, then broke into the starting lineup off and on the past two years after Trent Edwards fizzled. Now, six games into the season we've seen enough to believe he's a franchise quarterback? Geez, I don't know. I mean, he's 12-15 as a starter with Buffalo, including 4-2 this season.

Nevertheless, the Bills stand by their man. Maybe it's because they haven't had someone solidify this position since Drew Bledsoe left, but I'd be careful: Edwards was 5-1in 2008, then he and the Bills went on a downward spiral.

But there's a belief in Fitzpatrick there wasn't in Edwards, and here's hoping the Bills know what they're doing. That's a lot of money to spend on a hunch.

Nevertheless, I give GM Buddy Nix and the Buffalo front office the benefit of the doubt. They passed on quarterbacks in the draft, and, so far, they look like geniuses.

Now we see if they invest like ones.

He doesn't have to be. The thing people fail to realize, is that a QB doesn't have to be a superstar to win a superbowl. Brad Johnson wasn't. Trent Dilfer wasn't. All he has to do is be efficient ENOUGH to keep from losing the game for his team.

You make it sound like that's not how to win in the NFL. Run the ball, control the clock, keep the opposing offense off the field, and get big gains off of play action.

Well that's not where I'm going with this, I'm just trying to say that Fitz isn't exactly Peyton. I'm a Jets fan, ground and pound all the way!

Well if you believe in ESPN's QBR and efficiency ratings, Fitzpatrick has been the best QB in the league pretty much the entire season.
Yeah, no, sorry, I don't believe in that crap. Fitz has had a fine season, is much improved, and I know he beat Brady, but he DOES NOT belong in the same sentence as Brady(unless, of course, it is this sentence). Even if he did, Aaron Rodgers is on a different planet right now. This team has lived large off of the next great back, Fred Jackson, and the defense has generated a lot of turnovers. I'm gonna stop because I feel like I'm diminishing Fitzpatrick more than he deserves, but committing to him at this time is premature. At least let the season play out

Well if you believe in ESPN's QBR and efficiency ratings, Fitzpatrick has been the best QB in the league pretty much the entire season.  He also beat Tom Brady, which should make him #1 all time according to a lot of sports journalists (although then Tom Brady would be re-ranked ahead of him afterwards somehow).

Maybe the move was too fast.  I dunno, I think franchises that have legit QBs prefer to lock them up however.  Fitzpatrick is certainly a cut above guys like Kolb and Cassel, who both got big(ger?) contracts.

Why the rush? Because you lock up your franchise QB before his contract expires and he becomes a free agent. That's what.

because those teams like the bills are called small market teams and they don't spead money if he goes to free agency then he will be signed and probally overpaid by someone else

Cardinals gave Kolb more money with a lot less of a body of work and they are geniuses. This is a good signing.
Fitz will never get credit he deserves nationally from guys like Judge because he's from Harvard and not a big name football factory.
