Patriots' D deserves an F

Posted on: October 30, 2011 7:11 pm
The AFC officially is up for grabs.

Once I thought the Patriots were the team to beat. Then I watched them get reamed, steamed and dry cleaned by Pittsburgh. Anyone with a defense this bad doesn't go far ... and if the Patriots don't make wholesale improvements in the league's worst defense they're not going anywhere.

Usually, Tom Brady is enough to save them from themselves. But not Sunday. Brady was frazzled, his receivers had trouble getting open and his offensive line committed dumb penalties. In short, the Patriots flat-out stunk. Never has a team deserved to lose more than New England did Sunday.

Look, Hines Ward didn't play. James Harrison didn't play. James Farrior didn't play. And LaMarr Woodley bowed out in the second half. Yet Pittsburgh still clobbered these guys.

Its first drive lasted 11 plays. Its second 16. The Steelers had the ball for 13:36 in the first quarter and 21:13 in the first half. I think you get the idea. They dominated their opponents and established themselves ... no, Baltimore ... no, Buffalo? ... somebody, anybody, as the team to beat in the AFC.

All I know is that New England's not that club. Not with this defense.

Patriots' D deserves an F

Just let it be known that Tom Brady is a great QB. Especially when he has time to throw as comfortable as your pillow. When he doesnt have that much time you get what you saw tonight. He is one of the top guys in the league, and the Pats are in the top part of the best teams, but with just a tad bit less time to throw the ball, they become just a beatable team. Big Ben showed yet again a performance based on buying time and making timely throws. Next week vs. Ravens will be a great game!

Soxpatsfan-  seriously man, what game were you watching????  thats like saying if pitt would have scored touchdowns instead of kicking 3 or 4 fieldgoals they would have won 40 something to 17??  tonight they simply got owned and tom brady looked average at best.  amazing how that happens when he feels a little pressure.

Is it possible that the Pats are experiencing something the Steelers franchise endured over 30 years ago?? The Super Bowl afterglow? Otherwise known to Steeler fans as the 1980's????

Man to man is a beautiful thing...  love it... hope they keep doing it...

WHO CARES WHO IS THE TEAM TO BEAT IN OCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????????????

Steelers fan here, love the "w" obviously but who really cares who is the "best" now?  Tell me who was the "best" week 8 last year?  If it was GB then it matters... I hardly think it was...

Great win Pburgh... BUT, it won't matter if you don't beat the sorry Ratbirds next Sunday night...

But we all know the Ravens are toast next week... Flacco can't wait to fold and put things back into their rightful place next week...  LOSE to the JAGS and then follow it up with a dud at home against the sorry Cards? They were lucky to win... KOLB is a joke...

Here we go Steelers, here we go...

It should be fairly clear that New England's best days are behind them. Brady is still a good quarterback, but their receivers are nothing special, at least from a speed standpoint. The Steelers made a good decision to abandon their normal zone coverage and go to man to man on the Patriots. It became clear that the Pats' receivers could not get open against the Steelers' DB's when the Steelers locked up on them. As for the when the Steelers had the ball, was anyone really surprise at how easily Ben Rothelisberger passed against the worst defense in the NFL? That was the aspect of the game that I think most people expected to play out just as it did.

The Pats are a good team, to be sure, but it's silly to have thought they would be the 'class' of the AFC. No team with a bottom-feeding defense can ever by considered the class of anything. Really, at this point, for a team that hasn't won a Super Bowl in some time, can the football media finally stop fawning over these guys? The Pats had their run, but it's over. Meanwhile, the Steelers are beginning to look like a team that will make its fourth trip to the Superbowl in the last seven years, a run not so different than the one that the Super Steelers of the 70's had back in the day.

It has been said that the Steelers are getting old when they lose, but nothing is said about it when they win.  Tom Brady is my fantasy QB (for now) yet I have watched his numbers plummet from 41 in week 1, to barely breaking 20.  He just had a bye week, so he should have been rested, along with the rest of the Pat's, but they let my "aging" Steelers beat them.  It's not entirely that the Patriots stunk. but they have been hailed as the "greatest team ever" for so long, that people really believe that they can't be beaten.  The Steelers are 2-1 in Super Bowls since the Patriots run of three Super Bowl victories (and the loss to the Giants) yet people forget about that.  They also forget that the Steelers also have youngsters like Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward starting for that defense.

If they're not the team to beat, then why does everyone get so damn excited to beat them?
Because they're hated and overrated. It's Brady this and Belichick that. The Steelers have made 2 Super Bowls, winning one since NE was last there choking away a perfect season to a mediocre team that hasn't won a playoff game since. The Steelers have every right to feel slighted by the ignorant media. They came in hot as well.

Pittsburgh is the AFC's best team because they EARNED that right, by representing them in the Super Bowl last year. Until they're ousted they should remain the favorite. However, idiots like Judge and Prisco disrespect them by picking NE to beat them @ their house. The Steelers showed them by smacking the Patriots around and exposing their porous defense for the entire country to see.

All I know is that New England's not that club. Not with this defense.
This is news to Judge? It just illustrates how clueless he is. The Pats actually thought picking up Ellis would be a big move. They went after a fat washed up blob as well. Their defense is mediocre. When you hit Brady he's not the same QB. How's Ochochoko doing? What a fraud he is. Maybe he should make tweeting his full-time occupation.

When was NE's last playoff win? They were never the team to beat in the AFC. The AFC is wide-open. The Steelers, Ravens, Jets, Patriots and Chargers are all capable of winning the conference. No team has shown they're invulnerable.

This game brings the Pats back to the pack in the AFC East. They're tied with Buffalo(who has the tie-breaker) and one ahead of the Jets who they'll see in 2 weeks. The Jets get both teams the next 2 weeks. If they win both, they're 6-3 and own the tie-breaker over both teams. That's how close this race is.

NE is still a good team, they're no longer an elite team. The Giants Super Bowl upset started their slide back to the pack. Since then, the Steelers have twice won the AFC, the Colts the other. Why was NE was considered to favorite makes little sense. If anyone should have been the favorite, it should be the defending AFC champs. The Jets and Ravens also had good cases coming off back-to-back solid post-seasons. The Patriots have been a flop the last 2 years once the regular season ended.

You are looking through rose colored glasses. Double the TOP. Double the yardage. The Pats were extremely lucky to be even within striking distance. The score does not accurately depict the thrashing the Steelers gave them.
