Orton to Chicago? Bears can only hope

Thank you, Denver.

That should be the memo Chicago sends out in the wake of the release of quarterback Kyle Orton because where we didn't know where the Bears would turn a day ago we might now.

Welcome back, Kyle Orton. His return to the Bears makes too much sense not to happen -- provided, of course, the Bears are the only ones in line.

That's another way of saying that Chicago isn't the only club interested in a quarterback. Houston lost Matt Schaub, and Kansas City just subtracted Matt Cassel. If the Texans and Bears put in waiver claims on Orton, Houston would get him based on its strength of schedule.

Both need him, but Chicago really needs him. I mean, whom would you trust -- Caleb Hanie or Kyle Orton? Orton not only has been with the Bears; he helped lead them to the playoffs. Teammates loved him then, and they will love him again ... because he's a quarterback who can win and who has won.

I'm not so sure about Hanie.

Anyway, where I thought the Bears were in trouble without Jay Cutler, they won't be if they can land Orton. As I said, it makes too much sense not to take place.

Reports out of Denver indicated that Orton and his agent spoke to the Broncos about a possible release after the Cutler injury, with the idea that Orton would move to Chicago. So why would the Broncos budge? Well, let me ask you this: Don't you find it more than coincidental that Denver released him the week the Bears play the first-place Oakland Raiders?

Denver needs help to catch Oakland, and maybe Orton is the guy to lend it -- provided the Bears acquire him. Anyway, if it happens Orton could ... and should ... keep the Bears in the thick of the playoff picture.

Orton to Chicago? Bears can only hope

I know fans love a flashy QB but...and this is will sound crazy...

The last two seasons Kyle Orton had a better passer rating than Jay Cutler. 86.8 and 87.5 to 76.8 and 86.3. And while Cutler threw more touchdowns he also threw more passes. So Quarterback-wise the better play was in Denver because Cutler gave the ball away ALOT. 49 INTs as a Bear.

Now the problem in Denver wasn't Kyle Orton. And the problem in Chicago wasn't Kyle Orton.

Yep, it sounds crazy.

The only season where you may have been able to make an argument that Orton was better than Cutler was 2009, their first year's with their respective new teams.   There's no question that Cutler tossed too many INTs, particularly in the Red Zone.  But you cannot forget that Orton went to a team that had a solid O-line and a #1 WR ........ while Cutler went to a team with an O-line in flux and no notable talent at the receiver position.

Orton was 8 - 7 as a starter that year, Cutler was 7 - 9.  So I would certainly agree that you could make a case for Orton being a better QB than Cutler that year.

But the last two years Cutler has left Orton in the dust.  From the beginning of the 2010 season to the game against the Chargers, Cutler has 36 TDs and 23 INTs (only 7 this season).  But he also has a 24 - 17 record as a starter.

As for Orton, in the last two years he had 28 TDs and 16 INTs ........ very respectable totals.  But he is only 4 - 14 over that span and 12 - 21 during his 3 years in Denver.

You can say that Orton wasn't the problem in Denver or Chicago.  But it is abundantly clear that he wasn't the solution for either team.

Clemens just signed by Houston...

Houston just claimed Clemens so Orton goes to Chicago if they want him, not sure about that but he does know the offense.

I agree, even if you bring Orton in, he won't be ready to play this week, so let Hanie step in...If he is more mobile than Cutler, maybe Martz can open up the playbook again now that the O-line has come together lately, and not max-protect with only 2 receivers going out. The problem is, I thought the same thing when the Colts brought in Collins and now we see how Curtis Painter couldn't step up. So many people claim Orton is done, but his numbers last year were pretty good- key injuries and a new offensive coordinator, and head coach hurt him as much as anything. Put him in burgungy and gold for the remainder of the season and give Grossman back to Chicago for a holiday homecoming. As bad weather approaches, all a QB in Chicago has to do is hand-off to Forte 25-30 times anyway.

Man alive! There is way to much Hanie bashing going on out there!  You haven't even seen the poor kid play yet and all of a sudden there's no hope for the Bears?? I can't wait for all the so called analysts to eat crow when they see he can manage the game just fine.  Thats all he needs to do until Cutler gets back with the soft schedule ahead.
PS. Hanie was the only QB to lead scoring drives against the Pack not once but twice last year. In a NFC championship game. In ONE quarter of play... Cutler couldn't do it in a half.

Orton to Chicago? Bears can only hope

Kyle Orton seems like a good fit in any of these stops BUT if he is able to land on a team that is going to be looking to make a QB acquisition in the offseason (look at the Dolphins) then he may end up taking a little less money for the longevity of more than just this year.  He's the backup in Chicago once Jay Cutler returns and would be the same in Kansas City when Matt Cassel returns.

Orton to Chicago? Bears can only hope

There's no way Orton would be ready to go against the Raiders this Sunday, even if the Bears signed him today.  So no, I don't see that as coincidental.

Orton to Chicago? Bears can only hope

Great post Salukiman - Love the line about being a fan, not a McCaskey. Hanie is the man for now, and he needs to be. He knows the system and the receivers and he knows what to expect from the protections he will get out of his O-line. But, Kyle Orton did a fine job in Chicago and for awhile in Denver when they put an offense around him. No one is claiming that Orton will be a savior, but he is a much better option than Enderlie would be should Hanie fail or get injured and he is a much better option than any of the couch-potato free agents waiting for their phone to ring. The Bears can not count on Cutler returning this year - we can hope, but no one knows how long the recovery will take and whether his thumb will allow him to perform at a high level, or not. This is a play-off caliber team and the Bears have plenty of salary cap space - so, yeah, McCaskey's - pay the man a solid wage for his six-plus weeks of work. He might be just what this team needs.
